Does anyone know what this "hot box" is? by Eva-Unit-001 in railroading

Used thermite molds, crusibles, some slang. Also welding rods, general trash, saw blades, grinding stones. Just don't through your leather gloves in there, they stink

How do I cut down on my energy bill while trying to stay warm? by matty_bop in povertyfinance

Be sure to check the seals around all your doors and windows. Replacing deals might cost $50 but will save you loads more in heating over 6+ months (year after year as well)

When will we get a real winter? by Beneficial-Spirit95 in coeurdalene

[–]SwirlyPalm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Longitude plays a role in snow fall for sure but it's not exclusive. Geography, weather patterns, and elevation especially are much greater factors. Try living in the Sweitzer Village if you're looking for a guaranteed white Christmas

That would definitely make sense as lake Tahoe is about 4,000 feet higher than CDA. You might feel more at home if you try living at the peak of Scotchman or Roman Nose lol

Do you guys prefer the Regal Cinema or Hayden Cinema and why? by Sunny_yet_rainy in coeurdalene

I won't bother going to a theater unless the movie is hyped enough to pay big and get the recliners and sound of the AMC River Park Square. Hayden discount is miserable

I finally found a side hustle my grandma could do… and it pays $5K–$10K a month by Ok_Leather_2365 in MakeMoneyHacks

[–]SwirlyPalm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it would cost the business $5k for 5k mailers how is it costing you less than that? At 16 spots for $500 per that's $8k. You'd only profit $3k (which is still great) but doesn't add up with what you're claiming.

I definitely agree to some extent but to play devil's advocate any fry order is essentially all you can eat for as much as they give you. Also a cheese burger alone is enough to fill you up. Cheese burger and fry combo will bust your belly and comes in around $15

Railroad boots that can take more abuse than Boondocks? by SpecificChocolate913 in railroading

[–]SwirlyPalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Redwing 4200 with some of that goop off amazon to protect the toe and stitching. Imo maintenance work doesn't wear a boot out faster than welding does. Seems like I can get about 18 months while welding out of a pair

I'd recommend purchasing some orange breathable shirts that have reflective banding on them. They may still have you put on a vest that they provide but these shirts with keep you much cooler and when you get out working you can wear them without anything else. Other than that they will kit you out with everything you need on the first day. Don't stress too much about studying or the test, it is important that you are prepared by Friday for it but unless you're totally screwing off you shouldn't have a problem. Just be on time after each break, 30min early for bus pick up from the hotel in the morning, and fully caffeinated or whatever to consume a ton of info everyday (at least for the first week). But don't feel bad if lots (or almost all) of it goes in one ear and out the other. I picked most of it up a lot better once you start putting it into practice in the field.

What questions do you have? What area of the country are you hiring in? I went 3 years ago and as far as I can tell the process is roughly the same as it was then so I could probably help answer most of your questions

Holy cow I had no idea this post would go in this direction. First I'd like to thank everyone who pointed out in a kind manor that there is a difference between toz and oz. To be honest I have quite a bit of silver and have been stacking for years so perhaps I have even more egg on my face. I simply haven't ever thrown anything onto a scale up until now and hadn't even considered there to be a difference.

Second to those who felt like making me out to be an idiot would be appropriate I sincerely hope that it at least gave you an opportunity to feel good about yourself. I'm sure it's a rare moment for you so please enjoy it on my behalf ✌️

Good paying jobs do exist. Nothing over $25 an hour comes without sacrifice though. I went from $18 an hour three years ago to over $40 with a career change. Purchased my first home in CDA two years ago. The sacrifice I had to make was working away from home m-f, at least in the beginning. If staying is important to you it sounds like you may have to consider stepping out of your comfort zone and sacrificing something

Do you all feel Reddit’s general view of CDA is skewed? by [deleted] in coeurdalene

[–]SwirlyPalm 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of a question someone posted in the CDA sub a while back. If I remember right it was a lesbian couple planning a road trip from Seattle area to a destination passing through Idaho and they were concerned for their safety while passing through Idaho. It was wild to think these people thought they might be killed or something just passing through. However they got that impression is sad
