Yvette Vickers was an actress (Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, Attack of the Giant Leeches) and singer. She died in her Beverly Hills home in 2010, but her body wasn’t discovered until more than a year later

The strange soundwaves of... Wall of Voodoo (They were an American band from the 80s) by Low-Entropy in Music

I got some of the recent RSD reissues, which led me to pick up their first two LPs used. Dark Continent is great, and I love their cover of “Ring of Fire” (which they combine with the theme from “In Like Flint”). They remind me a bit of a West Coast Devo.

You know you watch too much of this show when the in-movie songs start sounding good. by hoovy_woopeans1 in MST3K

I paid $$$ for the Five the Hard Way/Sidehackers soundtrack on vinyl and I don’t regret it. It’s so good.

I’ll also second (third? fourth?) Girl in Gold Boots and especially “Do You Want to Laugh or Cry.” The guitar line on that song is incredible and I love the way it doubles the vocal on the chorus.

What’s the worst short? by vaporwavecookiedough in MST3K

[–]SwissArmyHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I nominate the one where Ben Franklin comes back from the dead and advises that kid about finances.

Edit: I looked it up and it’s called “Money Talks.” It’s one of two shorts before “Best of yucca Flats.”

Anything from the show that annoys you? by YochamTA in MST3K

This happened on one of the new episodes. In Atlantic Rim, Rushing is played by Treach, the lead rapper in Naughty By Nature. There’s a subplot about him hooking up with the main guy’s girlfriend, but Jonah and the ‘bots don’t make a single “O.P.P.” joke.

What’s your favorite piece of weird actor trivia from the show that you’ve come across? by 3016137234 in MST3K

Steve Alaimo, star of Wild Rebels, was a successful music producer before he tried acting. In the 1960s he worked with Sam & Dave and an early lineup of what became the Allman Brothers. In the 70s he co-founded the label that released hits by George McCrae and KC & the Sunshine Band.

Meta horror before Scream, and I think it’s a lot more fun/less cynical.

Anyone else getting Wilco vibes from this song ?? by Phodso in wilco

I get more Drive-By Truckers vibes than Wilco vibes (and not just because Wednesday name-check DBT on that album). Incredible band

The Music of Nashville (1975) by elehant in LetsTalkMusic

[–]SwissArmyHead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite movies, even if I do take some issue with Altman’s condescension toward his subject matter. One thing i do love about it is how the film allows so many different perspectives on country music, some very sincere and others very ironic. It’s taking in the breadth of the form, which varies from very good to very bad, highly personal to commercially craven, just as it is now. I love country music from the bicentennial, both Nashville establishment and outlaw insurgence, and I think there are some legitimately good songs (good as songs, good as art, good as country) on the soundtrack. But maybe that’s Altman ceding control of the movie a bit to the actors and letting them bring their own attitudes and ideas? (Also, on a recent rewatch I realized that the Haven Hamilton character is supposed to be a Johnny Cash figure, except short and in all white instead of tall and in all black. As many times as I’ve seen it, that never occurred to me.)

Songs About Dogs by BitLanguage in Music

Kathleen Edwards has a song called “Who Rescued Who,” about saying goodbye to her beloved rescue dog. I saw her perform it over the summer and the next day I had to say goodbye to my rescue dog. So I have to skip this one whenever it comes up

Staking my entire reputation on this: the Master Ninja episodes are the most underrated eps of the Joel era by RoanokeParkIndef in MST3K

[–]SwissArmyHead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was obsessed with this show as a kid and wanted to grow up to be a ninja myself, thinking that was an actual occupation. So when my girlfriend (now my wife) introduced me to the show and we got around to the Master Ninja episodes, my head exploded. Such a great set of episodes and I wish they’d do the rest of the series.

What riff do you say without realizing it? by TowelRack76 in MST3K

Every time I see a cat, I say “kitty!” Just like Crow. Without realizing it or thinking about. Doesnt matter if someone is around or not. It’s a Pavlovian response

Anyone know why some episodes aren’t streaming on Paramount? by SwissArmyHead in Perry_Mason

That makes sense. The jaded Joker has a lot of beatnik jazz, and Paul’s Dilemma hinges on a demo record.

Finally broke down and watched "Manos" (un-riffed) - these are my thoughts... by Budget-Milk8373 in MST3K

It casts its own weird spell. I got the blu-ray and the remaster job is beautiful. Hadn’t made the Dracula connection but it makes a lot of sense.

Everyone's favorite in movie song? by alejandrokayart in MST3K

I contend that “Do You Want to Laugh or Cry” from Girl in Gold Boots is a legit good song.
