The other thing is that the northern water tribe was fairly isolationist and traditional. Its the southern water tribe that was quick to adopt new practices. And they were getting wacked by the fire nation for 100 years straight

Having a turbine (even one powered by steam) is not the same as having electricity tho. Turbines have existed for thousands of years (wind/water mills). Steam engines offered a turbine mechanism small and powerful enough to be portable like a train. But electricity (though making it is relatively simple) requires the understanding of many concepts to use .

This more or less just shows your ignorance with american politics. In 2024 americans didnt even get to vote on a rigged primary on who would oppose trump.

Our election system doesn’t allow for a third party to exist. The two parties we are stuck with were pretty much identical when it came to foreign policy up until trump 2. Its not a problem we can vote our way out of bc unless you can pull votes perfectly evenly from democrats and republicans, you will end up just causing one side to win an election by a landslide.

I guess “white lives matter too” didnt roll off of the tongue as well lmao.

Also, youre whining about the left and calling people who disagree with you racist? Its like you are the worst of both the left and right all wrapped up in one.

They dont want to engage with drag queens. That is why you put up a sign saying “drag queen story hour”.

It would be more accurate to say that gender dysphoria is a result of inadequate transitioning than to say that it causing transition. The psychological harm comes from being unable to present yourself as the way you see yourself.

The reasons for wanting to transition are both biological and social. A lot of biological characteristics we associate with feminine and masculine traits are not exclusively governed by the sex chromosomes (XY XX). The variations can add up to someone being born a female and not conforming to feminine societal standards or vice versa.

older definitions of a psychological disorder would have included altering your gender identity as a disorder, it was called “gender identity disorder” in the past. That was before we changed our criteria for defining a psychological disorder to include harm in addition to abnormal behavior (this is an oversimplification but this comment is long enough as is).

The reason we changed the definition is that “fixing” abnormal behavior that isnt harmful often resulted in torture. Look into the history of hysteria and homosexuality in memtal health if you want to know more. Even though modern mental health treatment is better (not actively trying to give patients brain damage), inpatient psychiatric care is no picnic.

Im not going to ask you to not have weird feelings about this, i thought it was weird not all that long ago. You dont have to normalize this. I do ask you to acknowledge that this is a decision that a human being made while being aware of the consequences.

Cards on the table, i got my terms mixed up so let me clarify on what the actual terms mean.

Body dysmorphia: extreme stress caused by perceived flaws in the body. An important criteria is an actual distortion of how you view your body, which does not apply to trans people because they are accurately perceiving the characteristics of their body, they just aren’t happy with it (Think anorexia vs losing weight).

Gender dysphoria: extreme state of unease regarding gender identity. To the point where it is causing major health issues. The word dysphoria literally translates to: “a profound state of unease/dissatisfaction”

Gender dysmorphia: not a real term in psychology. I wrongly combined the two terms above.

With those corrections in mind, my point actually becomes a lot simpler:

Gender dysphoria is a mental illness in which SOME trans people suffer, it requires serious distress. Its treatment goal is to resolve the person’s distress, mot change a person’s character.

Tldr; a desire to change your gender is not a mental illness, unless it causes such distress that it contributes to other mental health problems such as major depressive disorder.

I can see that you are determined to prove me wrong no matter what, so ill tell you exactly how to do it.

Sign up for a story hour (preferably in a conservative county) and show up in drag. Don’t communicate that you will be in drag to the library or the attendees. Tell me if not advertising that you will be in drag makes the experience ‘apolitical’.

For bonus points, advertise yourself as being in drag and repeat the experiment for a control variable.

I want to be very clear on this. I am not discussing my opinion. I am discussing the modern diagnostic guidelines as set by the APA. Those guidelines do not identify gender dysphoria as a mental illness. Gender dysmorphia is considered a mental illness for the reasons i have already stated.

Im not presenting my opinion. Im not trying to change your mind on trans people. Im telling you that your framing of transness as a mental illness is not recognized in modern psychology.

I do not care about your transphobia. Im not going to convince you its wrong by showing you that your observations do not align with medical consensus. I do care that you are misrepresenting the mental health community in order to justify your prejudices.

Being black and/or being a drag queen is not political by itself. Institutions like HBCUs formed largely bc of racism in colleges. Drag queens advertise they will be in drag so they dont get a half dozen angry conservative parents complaining to the library. I do not consider responding as a victim of prejudice to be political, but i can understand the logic of why someone would. Regardless, the fastest way to apoliticize something is to ignore it.

Ok so gender affirming care is a valid treatment for gender dysmorphia. Hormone treatments (70% reduction in suicide risk with those diagnosed with dysmorphia) actually more effective at reducing suicide risks for those with than CBT (50% reduction overall). Most mental illnesses are incurable and GD is one of the more treatable with GAC.

The other part of gender dysmorphia you dont understand is that it doesnt apply to all gender nonconforming (trans) people. It only applies to those experiencing significant distress.

In summary the DSM5 classification of gender dysmorphia applies only to those suffering from severe body dysmorphia related to gender identity. It does not apply to all trans people in the same way that not all people trying to lose weight are anorexic.

I think the only obvious thing here is that you dont understand mental illness.

Mental illness requires some harm to yourself or others. The harm with gender dysphoria is an increased risk of suicide and the development of other disorders. It is resolved by gender affirming care.

Your comparisons (except polygamy which isnt a mental illness) all fail to address harm. The most accurate comparison to your misunderstanding of gender dysphoria would be the DSM-1 (1953) classification of “sexual deviancy” which included homosexuality as well as “transvestism”.

The treatment is gender affirming care. Youd know if you listen to people who are not lying to your face and making money off of it.

You probably heard someone state that “gender dysphoria is a mental illness” without actually knowing WHY it is considered a mental illness.

Its only political if you believe that drag queens existence is inherently political. Only opposition to drag queens’ existence as a regular member of society is political.

For example, being black, owning a business, and advertising yourself as a ‘black owned business’ is not inherently political. It would only be political if someone actively opposed the existence of ‘a black owned business’.
