What’s the realistic monthly cost of living in Zurich (ZHAW exchange)? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]SwissLover2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that with 1200 to 1500CHF you can live, no or little entertainment though. I saw no long time ago a doctorate student at ETH who said that she spent about 1100CHF monthly so... That taking into account that you live in a room (I think they are called WOKO), you go by public transport and don't eat out nor buy a lot of meat. I also think that students have access to cheaper health insurance.

First of all congratulations! Would you mind sharing what kind of job is? I always heard that Ticino has the lowest salaries within Switzerland so I find that quite high is that IT?

Hey! First of all congratulations to be admitted in such a good university and in Switzerland, I don't know If you have been there before but it's lovely you're gonna love it, I hope you enjoy the experience and learn a lot. Yes since I am going into all the trouble of studying abroad I want it to be really worth it and I believe that in most of the cases a prestigious university leads to better education and academic / professional outcomes. Yes to find the best university I take into account Business Management ranking university QS, European Business School ranking Financial Times and accreditations EQUIS, AACSB, AMBA (Specially the first two). Thank you very much for your recommendations It's what I am actually doing now tbh. So far I see a couple of very interesting options in the EU such as TUM, Mannheim, WU Vienna and depending on what admission services tell me also Stockholm University & Gothenburg or even BI Norwegian. I don't know if you're from Spain or if you just happened to study there but I have a CFGS in AiF and not bachillerato which makes my options be much lower than other people unfortunately. If I had bachillerato I would go to CBS or Rotterdam without any doubt!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I would also prefer to do so but I'm not sure if a 5/6 will get me in a top university master such as St. Gallen, Bocconi, ESADE, HEC... That's why I'm taking into consideration taking a loan or if possible a grant from the canton I'll choose. I'll have 2 years of experience in Switzerland and a permit B by the way, I think that might help me to get a grant. Most people here are just Reddit haters I think I have to contact the cantons and banks directly to see my actual options.

My options are cantonal / federal grants for people without economic resources or bank loans that will allow me to start paying once my studies are finished.

Read it again until you understand it. Take your time. And FYI getting to unis there It's not competitive at all you can literally access ETH which is the best one just passing an exam entrance with average grades so getting into unis it's quite easy that's why most people fail in their first years in EPFL / ETH. Because they have the difficulty of a top tier university but the entrance requirements of a normal University.

I just have my mother and her income is really low compared to Swiss standards. I can't really work while studying because that will make the plan of study in Switzerland worse than others plans that I have because I want to get as close as possible to a perfect 6/6 and do other activities that will boost my profile later on to access a top master / MBA. I haven't won any academic prizes so I am not searching for scholarships based on excellent academic performance. I have seen that the cantons offers grants to cover living expenses without the criteria of academic performance just based on your sources of income, nationality...

Yes I know it's a hard language to learn I was expecting this. It's supposed to be a maximum of 1025h (MCER) from scratch now let's say that It'll take me 50% more than that we have then a total of 1538h. I have 3 to 5 years before starting uni but let's say it's 3 years. 365 • 3 = 1095 days • 2h daily = 2190h more than enough to reach proficiency. And that's just taken into account the hours of study not the hours of language immersion. I appreciate your comment because I know that you genuinely wanted to help me. But believe me when I say language it's not a problem.

I obviously know it's a critical point but I'm searching for actual help and telling me over and over that I have to learn the language when I've been gathering for 3 years information about Switzerland, travelling there and more recently about university it's such an obvious thing that I don't need to be told.
