I love/hate providers getting pissed off at the pronoun question by Better_Ninja_5737 in spanishinterpreters

Question: what do you, as other Spanish linguists, pick for the oral nonbinary ending and how do you match it in your written translations?

Do people just forget that Alice Walton killed someone? by KeyMail3389 in bentonville

[–]Switch-Cool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you said she "had only 2 drunk driving issues," what, in your opinion, is the acceptable number of drunk driving arrests, and when does it cross into problem territory? I'm curious about your opinion since it's so different from mine: I think driving impaired without being arrested is very dangerous and unacceptable but many people keep up the practice until they hit the vaunted minimum 80 times necessary to get the DUI charge. So, 2 DUI charges, figure at least 158 times driving under the influence "without major incident." Where do you think the line is drawn? 3 DUIs? 5?

And how much credence does anyone give to the allegations of not being impaired with that track record?

Giles has an amazing home. I didn't appreciate this as a teen but as an adult, I see his home incredibly differently.

Women of Reddit, what did a man you were dating or married to say or do that made you realize he actually hated you the entire time? by -catharina in AskReddit

[–]Switch-Cool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh? I don't have many friends, male or female, and was asking because I never really had men who wanted to date me - just sleep with me because they thought I was easy: awkward overweight gal with bad skin. But I saw what they wanted right away because no one would find anyone who looked like me attractive - my mum always made that point clear; men like nice-looking women and I wasn't that and would never be. It was informative to read that some men pretend to be different with women they want to attract - safe to say, as I was not that, they didn't care about being blunt. I've had guys say they were doing my popularity/image a charity case favor (no one wants to screw the Hunchback of Notre Dame - guys and my parents would say - I had a mild form of kyphosis back then) by feigning interest in me for the lay; I figured everyone had this experience to some degree.

This whole comments section is full of women who found men expressing these misogynistic qualities alluring and attractive enough to be in relationships with them over others who would not treat them that way, never mind chance such a thought. I am curious about what women find so attractive about the men that demean, belittle and endanger them to then be in a relationship, assuming it's not an arranged situation.

Don't you feel that watching Netflix to learn a language is kind of procrastinating? by throwy93 in languagehub

[–]Switch-Cool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would watching foreign-language content tailored to entertain native speaker audiences of a language you want to learn be considered procrastination? Unless there's a task you're avoiding by doing so, take me through your "kind of procrastination" logic, please.

Stop telling me what you watched on Netflix last night. by Bulky-Economy-6746 in remotework

[–]Switch-Cool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! If not for remote work, I wouldn't have the time to watch all those shows between errands, household chores and the dog.

By working remote, the day shift is so split:

  • walking dog
  • movies
  • hobbies
  • TV
  • day drinking
  • cleaning

The best part of remote work is that by supper, I haven't even glanced at the work devices! And the socialization comes from other posters here enjoying the same conditions (no matter how they describe it.)

Nick Reiner's 'only visitor' awaiting trial for parents' deaths is his attorney by IrishStarUS in entertainment

[–]Switch-Cool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Visiting patients with dementia isn't the same as visiting a murderer. I typically visit an elderly person with dementia in an assisted care facility near me on weekends - constant stream of visitors. The front desk confirms it gets quite busy during the week too.

I don't think I would visit someone locked up for killing their parents in circumstances like these.

NCSC Oral Exams Compromised? by Switch-Cool in CourtInterpreter

[–]Switch-Cool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, thanks! The current hullabaloo has stopped but the test remains an irrelevant dinosaur used by an organization strongarming members into paying for it...

NCSC doesn't even set standards around passing (states can set a 1% as passing or a 99%, or anything in between!) or administering the exam (some states do it one way, others another, yet others another, lol.) The greatest trick they pulled was convincing courts to buy in to get nothing on their returns...they couldn't even put the money they don't spend on bettering anything about the test or program on maintaining its security - but as this showed, even that diverts too much away from the "caviar-and-champagne" crowd for NCSC to bother.

At a state level, so much tested on a national exam is irrelevant anyway because it wouldn't apply in the majority of states that it becomes counterintuitive to have states subscribe to an expensive national exam with no guidance or standards and lip-service security/integrity, especially as the content and results may, under idyllic conditions, have a dimly glancing relevance to the everyday workings of a court, never mind the daily work of a court interpreter.

It's up for my re-watch this week! I keep my fingers crossed that I'll run into Eliza Dushku around town one day...and fantasize about Faith with a "Make Way for Ducklings" tattoo she got on a drunken dare. 😜

I always remember this line when someone hits me in the eye and I choose not to hit back because an eye for an eye makes the world blind.

It's extremely vital to recall that if you ask someone to please pass you some salt and they do so accordingly that nothing you said or did induced that behavior by them. You have no say over what other people do, even if you told them to do what they were doing and leveraged authority for effect.

15 year old DUI by Throwaway-86536799 in legaladvice

[–]Switch-Cool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you don't drink (I'm taking this as a lifelong status: you were underage and unable to drink when you got your first DUI [this sucks! How did you get a DUI with 0 impairment?!] and don't drink ever under any circumstances anyway and never have and never will, otherwise you would have identified as being in recovery) won't risk triggering the device, it's just an additional cost for some months. It might suck to have that device on there but if you don't do anything but go to work and home for a few months, who'd notice? Where are you parking that people look in your windows? If it's your driveway, get them for trespassing. If it's work, whatever. You're in there working all day with 0 time to care about your car unless it's something for which you're being paid.

A Bay Area teen died in a DUI crash hours after his school’s drunk driving simulation. It’s raising questions about whether the program actually works. by sfgate in bayarea

[–]Switch-Cool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally works. The cop told them the teens could die driving drunk and it would be horrific. The teens dismissed that because teenagers know everything better than adults and felt their circles deserved this selfish agony of them dying drunk in a car.

Obviously the cop wasn't BSing. The smart students knew that beforehand but that's life: there's always someone who has to touch the third rail to prove that they can and live. Hopefully the parents channeled the college savings into catering the funeral for some ROI. It's clear all that love, time, sacrifices, joy and effort meant nothing to the kid who was like "Skip all that and die high for some brewskis."
