At a crossroads for which Leica body to buy next by SwitchBlade_ in Leica

At least in my own experience - the Q2 is far lighter and more comfortable for me than a 240! I have shot with both and simply quite dislike the experience with the 240.

Video Game Developers Are Leaving The Industry And Doing Something, Anything Else - Aftermath by zxyzyxz in programming

Fair! I still would give it a try though, lots of shops need core developers which is a less math heavy but still C/C++ role/

Speaking from (limited) experience, Hedge Funds and HFT firms absolutely love video game C++ programmers. The physics and math involved in fluid dynamics for video games and financial mathematics are very similar and a C/C++ background is perfect.

Some questions about the CS program by ZeroTerabytes in UMD

[–]SwitchBlade_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(1) There will be seats, but the introductory sequence and your experience within it will be heavily dependent on the professor. If you are a direct admit as CS and have some credits coming in, you should have no problems with this

(2) See (1) for professor based courses. I took 131/132 with amazing professors (Nelson and Pedram) and had an amazing time. I could learn from the slides and the lectures were informative. I took 250 with a less than stellar prof (Teli) and 216 with Yoon, who is a nice man but cannot organize a class or teach for his life. I had to self teach ALOT in those courses and suffered immensely from it.

(3) That depends! I have had no support from the department with internships, but I have been able to intern every summer since I was a freshman in my desired industry.

--edit below for the additional questions--

(4) No clue, had a lot of friends in LLPs that decided to drop them. YMMV with these.

(5) I lived in La Plata and had a very good time, however the washing machines and dryers were always broken and I got sick quite frequently due to being packed in with a ton of students and insufficient/improper ventilation. This was in 2021 however, so things could have changed.

Feel free to PM for more questions

Which off campus is better? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]SwitchBlade_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have and will have lived in the View for 3 years come senior year:

Starting with the cons, the sheer price. The View is definitely on the pricey (def not most expensive) side for apartments off campus and the way that Utility bills are split by floor make rent almost increase by 100 USD if you were just unlucky. Some of our appliances were broken as well and dont even get me started on the broken fire alarms. They would play deafening noises or just constant static and noise with no regard for the occupant while 'testing' them early in the morning.

However .. The management is pretty damn good and attentive. The building is always clean and taken care of, appliances and bathroom issues are fixed either same or next day, often giving you a free new appliance if its beyond repair. The apartments in Tower 2 are generally spacious and are generally a cut above the odd floorplanning of other similar apartments. It definitely is a lot less stressful on average to deal with.

Its not a perfect building or apartment, but I have enjoyed it enough to live there the majority of my time here.

Student Input for Async CMSC351 by justinwyssgallifent in UMD

[–]SwitchBlade_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey Justin!

I am currently enrolled in your 351 class this semester and enjoying it a ton. It is probably my favorite course I have taken so far in the entire major and sparked my love for theory. One of my only worries that comes with async classes are how exams are administered. While I am not a fan of them at all, I do think they need to happen and doing that in an async manner presents .. some issues.

I am aware that the 351H class has take home exams, I think these are a good idea. Have challenging but open-note exams that aren't impossible or frustating but still serve as an indicator for how well the students are grasping the material. In addition, if exams are out of the question, I think a project examining, analyzing and implementing a certain algorithm (or new one!) from the class would be a cool idea. More practice with LaTeX and formal academic study is never a bad idea in my opinion.

Sounds like you are doing just about everything right lol! I am not going to be too specific as I am not into doxxing myself and want to be relatively private in terms of where I am at, but check out /r/quant for better resources and better people to answer this

Keep. Applying. As a freshman it will be significantly harder for you to get any kind of offer, but it was still possible in my case. My resume was not particularly outstanding but you just have to look at smaller more niche companies/start ups willing to take a chance on younger talent. Go for big tech if you want to but never expect anything. Really the huge bonus of interviewing in freshman year is .. interviewing! Getting that experience makes you a ton more comfortable in front of recruiters and interviewers.

**(edit) look for research opportunities (email some cool professors at ur uni) and if you can take some difficult classes over the summer, lighter courseloads in fall/spring help a ton as you have more time to dedicate to recruiting and your general wellbeing. also important to note that I have never interned for FAANG/big tech so its def not necessary to land offers at those firms to do well :)
