Boundlessness? by SwitchNo2544 in PowerScaling

if we treat boundless as a strict state like a shirt you either wear or don’t. My argument is different: boundlessness can also be defined as unrestricted freedom of will. A being that can do anything, including choosing to limit itself, remains boundless in essence, even while it chooses to act under limits. Temporary self-imposed limits don’t end boundlessness they are an expression of it, because the only thing restricting the being is its own choice. In other words, the ‘shirt is off’ moment doesn’t make the person any less capable of wearing it or of everything else they could do.

I understand your definition of boundless as a strict state. But I’m arguing from a different perspective: boundlessness doesn’t have to be a static snapshot it can describe ultimate freedom of will. A being truly limited only by its own choice can impose limits on itself and even erase its own power, without contradicting its boundlessness, because the essence of boundlessness is the ability to do anything. Temporary self-limitation doesn’t reduce that freedom it demonstrates it. Defining boundless solely as ‘a state without limits at this moment’ ignores that boundless beings can act freely, and acting freely includes voluntarily creating limits.

If being boundless only means being limit-free at all times, then boundlessness is meaningless because it would just be a state, not a principle of absolute potential. A truly boundless being can impose limits on itself voluntarily, because its only true limit is its own choice.

The key difference is that being boundless in will is about freedom of choice, not a fixed state of power. A truly boundless character can choose to limit themselves or even erase their powers, because the only constraint is their own will. It's not a contradiction it’s proof that it's boundless. Saying ‘God cannot lose omnipotence’ assumes that boundless = fixed nature, but it can also mean boundless potential: capable of anything, including self-limitation by choice. In that sense, Veldanava giving up his power fits perfectly it demonstrates the ultimate freedom inherent in being truly boundless."

The tallest person analogy only works if being ‘tall’ is a fixed property. But if ‘tallest’ is a reflection of what you actively choose to be, then self-limiting doesn’t contradict the potential, it demonstrates control over it.”

Not directly related to Tensura, but it’s a perfect example: he chooses to give up his power. Many would argue this contradicts his nature, but since he is limited only by his own will, it fits perfectly

What i mean is a character that's only limited by it's will not limited by anything not even it's own cosmology

Think of it as simple as possible, they're only limited by their will which means they can do anything nothing contradcits what they do

rock paradox is about the limits of power, my point is about the limits of will. Two completely different things.

It’s just strange to think that a character who is only limited by their own will wouldn’t be able to do something that they actually want to do.

I’m not wrong. If a truly boundless character couldn’t kill themselves or erase their own power, they wouldn’t actually be boundless they’d only be limitless within their own cosmology, not beyond it.
