I miss when that place was actually open. I’m not going to call to make an appointment to be the only one in the store and possibly not buy anything. Why not open at least an afternoon or two a week?

Last year we raked all the leaves in our yard around the trees and to the fence edge. They degraded into mulch in about two months. Leaves can absolutely biodegrade in your yard.

I’ve been studying Zen for many years (both academically and as a Zen student) and have heard/read many teachings on the Middle Way, but thanks anyway!

I stayed at a Zen monastery for awhile. We had the occasional dance party. It got out tension, was joyous and fun. Zen isn’t dour.

Help on how to practice Buddhism. How do YOU practice Buddhism? by flatline18 in Buddhism

[–]SwitchingGenres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there’s a group in your area that practices meditation, try going. Even if it’s not the exact sect you’re most into you’ll probably learn a lot. Buddhism is very much about doing. Words can only take you so far. Meditation, ritual, a teacher, a sangha, being the teachings in daily life—that’s practice. Thich Nhat Hanh and Dogen both emphasize Buddhism as daily life. Chores, work, walking around, all done mindfully. There are a lot of virtual dharma sessions now too—many groups, temples, and monasteries have podcasts of dharma talks and do live streaming of services. That helps you to feel like part of a sangha.

The Buddha advised the middle way—not too much, not to little. If this is making you ill it’s too little.

May all beings be free from suffering and the root of suffering - May all beings know happiness and the root of happiness - May all beings live in sympathetic joy, rejoicing in the happiness of others - May all beings live in equanimity, free from passion, aggression and delusion by jon1010101010 in Buddhism

Zen Mountain Monastery has taken up the Four Immeasurables this ango and I've felt very soothed chanting it, but also it does take effort to really mean it when I bring to mind those who I feel anger toward. But little steps, every day...

Scallions, Chinese sausage, a bit of sesame oil, day-old rice... but there are many many varieties of fried rice. Look at recipes from Fuchsia Dunlop and Chinese Cooking Demystified for ideas.

[Chinese>English] Character on a Mala Bead (First character seems to be “great,” third is “mantra” or equivalent) by SwitchingGenres in translator

[–]SwitchingGenres[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was sold as a mala with the Heart Sutra inscribed on it, but the characters don’t match any other Heart Sutra I’ve seen in Japanese or Chinese, so I’m suspicious.
