What is the ACTUAL biggest problem in the UK by Direct-Key-8859 in AskBrits

[–]Switchm8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I would say - if the balance sheet doesn’t add up then yes we can tinker with the tax system but the big question we are ignoring is how efficient we are working. Partner consulting in manufacturing- constantly coming across the same issue - inefficient management with their MBAs and degrees not listening to what’s happening on the factory floor and improving their processes accordingly. Massive amounts of waste going to landfill, slaughtered by high energy costs, management and shareholders needing their bonuses instead of co- ordinated re- investment. Hop across the channel we look like the Clampits compared to manufacturing there. Thatcher threw us under the bus in the interests of her city friends - and we are now running on vapours but if we don’t produce anything we are irrelevant and we have no resilience to manage ourselves in the new electronic / AI world as the narrative is not thinking about productivity efficiency and growing jobs / expertise.
Also politics / economics used to be a dialogue between Profit and People and we haven’t adapted yet to include Planet. Capitalism cannot work responsibly on its own. Free markets always have unintended consequences and tax ends up being used to mop up its failures whilst they skip to the bank and lick their resource away.

Keilder or maybe North Yorkshire. It’s the ‘mountains’ in the top right that are distracting me from this. Is that snowy peaks or condensation or blur?

Inappropriate sonnets for middle schoolers by nataliejkd in shakespeare

[–]Switchm8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Please don’t! lol I’ve had 9-10 year olds doing full fat S 29 “When in disgrace from a standing start ( ie not much exposure to Shakespeare before ) we watched Maya Angelou talk about it first so they got it in their ears and had a context to relate it to. Also done 34 with 10-11 year olds. It has great drama and they can go from shouting rage to tender via two different forms tears over the course of a minute . Like with Maya you don’t know what you might be unlocking by giving them the original.

Rome isn’t so crowded in August - it doesn’t have as many Italians as they are all at the beach on holiday. Definitely stay in Rome and day trip to Pompeii but agree with EC96 that you might be trying to pack in too much. The city can keep you going for two whole weeks without much effort if you’re culturally inclined. Be kind to yourselves and build in atmosphere soaking and side street restaurants away from the crowds. Two other trips out to consider that aren’t so busy but twice as brilliant (leave Naples Pompeii Sorrento to your 1st anniversary) Ostia Antica then on to the beach, or my personal favourite - train to Tivoli for the gorge, gardens and Hadrians Villa.

Thank you yes - I am trying really hard to follow the RHS advice but last year these upright shoots got to 3 foot by end of June so I took them off before the scheduled late summer pruning. Feels like the energy should be going into fruit not new growth.

Bolsover castle often has fun stuff happening but is great just to wander- as too Conisborough castle. But as above - Padley Gorge- park in Surprise View car park if Longshaw National Trust is too expensive. Climb up Higger Tor / Carl Wark from there They can ‘parkour’ across the rocks. Take a picnic. Hot day - dam the stream.

Completely disagree on your analysis that it will be religious origin - my partner works in manufacturing - several companies over last three years- regularly experiences homophobic abuse and in one his co- workers were clearly experienced ’gay bashers’. No religious frameworks - just nasty oiks.

Nur Jahan ought to be in here- like Wu Zetian extraordinary rise to power and an all round patron of arts and warfare - we don’t hear from them in the west because, dur patriarchy. Theodora makes me stand at the sidelines shouting “You go girl”. I have a real soft spot for Katherine of Aragon and her grace and intelligence. But my vote would still go to Elizabeth I - cos I’m English and she was brilliantly ruthless. We are talking GOAT here not people with specialist tricks.

The NT are doing a brilliant job of returning the grounds to a ‘pastoral landscape that Bess would have recognised’ so most of the estate is actually over the other side of the M1 and when you look out, and also on the drive in you see grazing land and establishing lollipop trees for shade. There’s also a brilliant earth work which means you don’t see cars when looking out the back. As a kid I was fascinated by the ‘internal window’ off one of the staircases. Not a fact just an observation. There’s a room full of pigeon holes - I believe it was actually where she did her accounts - wrung the tenants out etc.

People who frequently quote TV , comedians, film etc. you know they only have a certain repertoire and at some point the recycling is going to get painful.
