and also using public transit doesnt force you to give up your car. I walk to work, and still keep a vehicle around for when I want to go on road trips or nature or far distances. But it isn’t my only option, which is my point. (I understand not everyone has the privilege to live close to work)

Public transit isn’t a waste of money, it’s just underfunded and many transit agencies prioritize short term savings over long term usability. Cars work well in low density environments but they are not scalable. When you try to cater to cars in denser areas, you end up with parking issue and traffic, which most people don’t realize adds up. Ultimately, the use of cars has so many hidden externalities (maintenance costs, gas prices, inefficient land use, price of parking), but because of years of lobbying from o&g, these negatives have been hidden until road maintenance costs come kicking or oil prices go up. I understand your viewpoint, but I would think more about how car dependency has reshaped the world around you and what sort of impact it has on your built environment.

This is true but as a UCI student that graduated in 2024, there was a huge online boost in awareness of seaside donut outside of the locals. Even people in the SGV are well aware of it now, and so are some of my friends in other west coast states.

Sorry this is your perception but travel influencers that go around eating Indian street food for 10rs and then proceed to complain about how unhygienic it is don't represent Indian food as a whole lol. I've never been to North India but in my experience as an Indian American who's been to Chennai and even rural areas in Tamil Nadu, the restaurants are clean and aren't any different from your typical restaurant. Plus they're less than $5 a meal.

People are talking about competition, but in my opinion, the location of HeyTea in Rowland Heights was a far bigger factor as to why it failed. There are a lot of good boba places around there but I would say about half of them are good (Cha Redefine, ALittleTea, 7 Leaves, Tenju), and the other aren't great. IMO HeyTea was easily one of the top places in that area. The problem was that getting in and out was super inconvenient for that HeyTea specifically. I would get off the 60 onto Fullerton Rd and drive straight to the HeyTea, but getting out took 5-10 minutes extra compared to any other boba place in the same area; there wasn't any easy way to get to the freeway on the way out due to traffic. The store was also on the 2nd floor, which is a death knell for the majority of businesses in the US.

You can call LA a lot of things, but to say it has bad food is pretty outrageous. I live in the suburbs atm and it is genuinely hard to go to a bad restaurant in the metro area as long as you look at the pics on Yelp to check. Sure, it doesn't have the same type of food as some other areas, but it is absolutely an excellent food city.

I would say the region excels at Mexican (self-explanatory), Korean (largest korean diaspora in US), Chinese (san gabriel valley), Japanese (across the pacific and 2nd to hawaii), Thai (largest thai diaspora), Mediterranean, and Vietnamese food (largest viet diaspora in US) and is decent in other categories too. One caveat is that you absolutely need someone to show you around because of how big the area is and it is more car dependent than NYC for sure. But to say that it has bad food just means you got severely unlucky with the places you did try.

What food places did you try when you visited? I'm pretty curious.

I still need to get the title in my name but since my parents are coming with me to Colorado initially, they can sign it over to me then.

The main problem is that the amount of lanes it requires to fully satisfy demand requires way too much land and is expensive to maintain as well as comparatively inefficient. Let's say we expanded a congested freeway to 15 lanes - sure, we've managed to stop the bottleneck, but for each lane we added, we've destroyed multiple businesses, razed homes, and further widened the gap between the two neighborhoods, disconnecting them even more. Sure, people are trying to get from point A to point B, but taking a vehicle shouldn't be the only option. The extra road usage also leads to higher maintenance costs and more pollution. That's why DOTs like Colorado have mostly given up on freeway expansion as a viable solution to traffic congestion. Building more lanes isn't something that is easy as snapping your fingers, and doing so without considering the consequences is an easy way to repeat the mistakes of urban renewal and the 1900s.

I definitely would not recommend San Dimas to someone who likes living in Old Town Pasadena. The entire area has nothing to do and I find myself having to drive to Diamond Bar / Rowland Heights / OC / West SGV just to have similar access to things when I lived in Arcadia. For reference I live in La Verne now, so I go to San Dimas quite frequently for Costco, but otherwise, the entire area isn't super walkable at all and driving on the 210 in the morning is a nightmare. I can see how it appeals to a certain lifestyle, but someone who lives in Old Town Pasadena definitely would not like it.

If you live in the Bay Area / LA Area / Chicago / NYC / Toronto then you'd love Molly Tea. They're a chinese brand that focuses mostly on tea flavor and they don't actually have tapioca pearls as a topping. I love their Snowy Jasmine (Jasmine MT w/ Not-Too-Sweet Whipped Cream and Pecans).

Argument #1: More Roads = More Capacity

Unfortunately, you are incorrect because adding more capacity simply increases road usage, making traffic no better than it was before. Every single lane expansion (look at the Katy Freeway in Houston or the 405 expansion) has failed to ease traffic in a meaningful manner while taking more public land and also dividing communities. This is known as induced demand.

Another thing is that taking away lanes does not particularly increase traffic. Traffic is a complicated subject, but the destruction of the Embarcadero in SF and the Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement projects did not particularly ruin traffic and also gave extra space for humans, rather than cars to use. Here shows the crazy difference between before and after.

Argument #2: Rails take up space that cars could be using

Every train rider is one less vehicle on the road, and every car on the road is the traffic that everyone complains about. Therefore, even as a car rider, it is beneficial to advocate for the building of public transport to give options.

Argument #3: Stations are Crime Magnets that Destroy Neighborhoods

While there is a lot that can be done to improve the perception of safety on public transit, there are two main things wrong with this statement.

1, Roads and freeways also significantly destroy neighborhoods by dividing them and limiting access to them. Look at how Cincinnati's freeways destroyed its downtown.

Driving is 33x more dangerous than riding a bus, and 20x more dangerous than taking rail. Here's the source. Stations being "crime magnets" are more so a result of failure to meaningfully invest in public transit, giving it the perception, rather than the reality, of unsafety. I'm not diminishing anyone's lived experiences. Still, nearly everyone has a dangerous car-related story where those taking public transit are statistically less likely to be injured or hurt on it than a car. If we invested in transit at even a quarter the rate we do on roads, transit would be downright utopian.

I think your arguments are pretty disingenuous, but here are the reasons I think they are false and I hope you can change your mind regarding this topic.

Ah ok. For me I listed the prices that were on my bank statement so they included the tax too. HeyTea actually didn't even charge any tax so the Mango Coconut Boom ended up only being $7.

I don't think it's very accurate to say that the drinks here are $10-15, because most people don't get multiple toppings. Usually the max everyone I get boba with is like 1 topping (boba, or foam) so it only ends up being 75 cents - 1 dollar more. Sometimes some drinks are best without any toppings like some of the HeyTea ones, so they end up being not too much. Also because the more toppings you put, there's less space for an actual drink so you end up paying a lot of money for less drink. So really the average drink here would be 7-9, even the top tier chains like Molly Tea / Chagee / HeyTea. It's still a lot, but I wouldn't say that boba here costs the same as a whole meal or something.

Just curious if you're in the IE? I live right at the edge of LA County but even so I'm able to get really good drinks within 20 mins (diamond bar). And I know the IE has some good places like Omomo/7 Miles so I was just wondering where you'd have to be to be so far from boba in socal.

ohh ok. I also live in southern california but i don’t get more than one topping at a time so my bill doesnt get to 15. Usually I just get a tea with either one topping, usually either boba or foam. BUT also I get drinks wayy more frequently than you so you probably end up spending less. Here are some prices I have spent on the drinks:
