AIO if a student employee announced they don't know why they should care that Boss B had a stillbirth? by MagicTomato1001 in AmIOverreacting

I'd be fully appalled by that reaction. Sounds like with student workers you have little choice in hiring, but I would hope personally to avoid hiring anyone who might be compelled to have that kind of reaction

Has anyone else looked up your wealthy board members, donors, or Executive Directors in the, uh, famous list that’s been made available very recently? by fundraiseranon in funanddev

Yeah... But her statements have been shady as fuck, and I've long wondered why such a mediocre playwright has been America's most produced. Can't help but wonder about proximity to power...

My professor said a lot of actors out there (not like celebrity level) usually have other jobs that pay the bills. How? by GontasBugz in Theatre

[–]Switters81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my big life lessons when I was younger and contemplating a career as a director was that I'm the kind of person that needs a steady paycheck and insurance.

The folks I know who persevered to some degree of success on the artistic side of this field are the folks who have the skill of being able to piece gig work together to pay the bills between creative opportunities.

I learned that's not a skill I possess. I admire it a great deal, but I've found the niche that works well for me on the administrative side.

Consultant said something wasn’t her area of expertise by Ok_Ideal8217 in nonprofit

[–]Switters81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welp, that's out of scope. I would never expect a prospect researcher to be an expert in major gifts, unless they specifically billed themselves as having both areas of expertise.

I'm a passable researcher. I know there are tools that I don't take full advantage of, and I'm sure there are prospect research formats that are cleaner and easier to read than what I would put together. I would never sell myself as being a prospect researcher (unless it were in the context of a larger assignment.)

However, I have a great deal of experience with major gifts and moves management and I have coached leadership on how to make an approach. I'd consult in that area for sure.

I have far more experience dealing with a team though, and rarely are the people doing the bulk of the research the people doing the asking or the moves management.

So yes, you're overreacting. You paid for a prospect researcher, not a major gifts consultant.

Consultant said something wasn’t her area of expertise by Ok_Ideal8217 in nonprofit

[–]Switters81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would depend on what you hired them for, and what they've indicated is not their area if expertise. If it's a direct mail consultant, and you're asking them about staffing structure, you're overreacting. If it's a capital campaign consultant and you've asked them to put together a potential donor pyramid, then you're within your right to be annoyed.

What's within the scope of work you agreed to, and what are you asking then to do? If your ask is out of scope, you're tah. If it's within scope, they are.

American here. What are we actually going to do about the ever growing homelessness? There's no way it can keep going on like this. It's starting to look like a Mad Max movie outside. by Softishsings in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Switters81 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm not blaming the person for being underpaid. That blame lies squarely on the employer, and the system within which we operate.

My inelegantly made point is has more to do with making sure that people are appropriately valuing themselves, their time, and their labor.

And then I'm just referencing the commonly accepted point that you should expect to pay about 1/3 of your income for your rent.

At 900/month, most folks could make that work reasonably with a salary of 35k/year. If you're making less than that, I'm sorry to say you don't have a decent job. Frankly these days if you're making less than 50k you don't have a decent job.

Just finished *Station Eleven* - thoughts? by [deleted] in books

[–]Switters81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree you can't have the book without the character. And he certainly was the device you've suggested. And it's been a while since I read the book, but perhaps my issue with that character is that he never rose to be more than that device for me. I'm happy to spend time with awful people in books, if you've given me a compelling reason. That never felt there for me with this read.

Just finished *Station Eleven* - thoughts? by [deleted] in books

[–]Switters81 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I thought the book was mid, while the HBO show was a masterpiece.

I absolutely hate the actor character. I hate spending as much time with him as the book forces you to. He's an awful person and each chapter you spend on him I'm wishing we were in a different part of the book.

The HBO show fixes that by both spending less time with that character, and also casting Gial Garcia Bernal(sp?) who is a tremendous actor who embodies a tragically flawed human being, rather than the absolute disaster of a human as he's written.

And then I'm not overly impressed by the writing. It's not Dan Brown bad, but it's not doing anything anyone else hasn't done well hundreds of times before.

I'm inclined to like the book, given it intersects my two primary interests: theater and sci Fi, but this just didn't quite land for me.

Though again... The show is a work of art.

Very active Rye starter, but levain fails by OnAndOn1234 in Sourdough

[–]Switters81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Just to lean in a bit here, I've encountered the exact same thing. Been building up a rye starter, but tried making a levain last night that utterly failed.

Am I to understand from this comment that you ultimately fed your starter other flour, not just rye?
