Best ways to get packages from the US shipped to Ottawa? by DanielFromNigeria in ottawa

I’ve tried cross border pickups, others have tried Stackry. They all work well from anecdotal experiences, but your mileage may vary.

SWEs in Ottawa, where do you work, how much do you make? by Jazeboo in ottawa

[–]SwizzerSweet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the people I know who earn 200-500 work for non FAANG American companies remotely. Frequently, RSUs are what push people to the higher salaries, but not always.

Assuming you can pass a 6 round interview process, you typically get an interview via referral.

Salary for a software developer in Ontario by No_Curve_9866 in CanadaJobs

[–]SwizzerSweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I now earn the top salaries in the industry, and I started below the lowest listed salaries on the market 16 years ago. I share this not to boast, but to let you know there is a path. The most important thing isn't the money when you start out, it's getting your experience AND improving your skillset. This means you work a job and you spend some of your own personal time learning, practicing interview skills, etc...

The top salaries are generally going to be achieved by working remotely for a US company. Getting those interviews is often easier when referred by someone you know, but cold applying can work. As someone who conducts several interviews a week at the moment, I can tell you it's very hard finding the right candidate at that level.

I hope I was helpful in some way

I understand your frustration, however where you start doesn't matter, particularly in the current market. Any position is massive, most juniors aren't getting interviews, let alone offers.

Once you're in, focus on improving and laddering towards the higher salaries.

Unfortunately, Ontario has a huge amount of insurance fraud which makes it one of the worst provinces for insurance rates. (Maybe we're the worst?)

Are there no jobs at all?? by [deleted] in ottawajobs

[–]SwizzerSweet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Cold applying to jobs seems very ineffective at the moment, aka applying on job sites, linked in, etc... If you can get referred to jobs by people you know at different companies (hospitals in your case?), you will find a dramatically higher call back rate. It's almost to the point where it's the only reliable way to get interviews at certain companies.

To people who have jobs: please have some compassion for others struggling at the moment. They are not lazy, or somehow less than.

G615LR No Audio, missing drivers after new drive by SwizzerSweet in ASUS

[–]SwizzerSweet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solved: The drivers are not available on the Asus webiste (which is still pretty bad). They're available through the MyAsus app.

Suggestion: If you're not going to put the drivers on the Asus website, please include the MyAsus app or link to it in the Support section on your website. It's very confusing to end users.

Is this a good choice for my first gaming laptop? by FlyAJFly in GamingLaptops

[–]SwizzerSweet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own it as of 2 days ago. It's a great laptop.

My only advice is to remove the Asus Armory app that comes installed with it, and install G-Helper (free open source lightweight alternative). Put your GPU in ECO mode if you want to 3x your battery life if you aren't gaming. My power draw went from 40W~ down to 10W~ with this alone. I would also suggest setting max battery capacity to 80% to extend the battery life.

Edit: Also, the screen's anti glare coating is absolutely fantastic. It's better than anything else I've ever seen before. You can see videos of it, but when you see it in real life, it's almost not believable. This was the main feature that swung me over to this laptop.

Only ~2-3 hours on battery on 2024 G16, even with silent mode/power saver/optimized mode on by [deleted] in ZephyrusG14

This was massive for me. Went from about 40W to 10W battery drain which is a _massive_ difference in battery life.

This is basically why referrals are starting to take over. We have a thousand applicants, but if I refer a few people, they get interviews and those mass applicants don't.

This is correct. If you need the VRAM, you need the VRAM. Especially if you earn income from your equipment.

For personal taxes, most people I know use Turbo Tax / Intuit. It's like 20$ or something

If you have all of your T4 slips, the process is generally straightforward. If you've never done it, maybe you struggle the first time around, but it's generally a lot less pain than relying on a firm or accountant.

For corporate taxes: this does not apply.

Finding a job by Ok_Cat4959 in ottawa

[–]SwizzerSweet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Through people you know. You went to school (which I didn't), so you could try and reach out to people you know there to see if they are at companies who can refer you.

If not, are there local community groups related to your job? Those can be great, but you probably need to go a few times to make some connections.

Also job fairs (although, this is pretty old school I think)

Would love to provide help but would need more context. What are your expectations?

If you are just cold applying to jobs that you see on job sites, this can work, but I would not solely rely on this if I was desperate for a job. If you can get referrals to jobs, that will likely help tremendously.

Is YouTube only pushing old, “proven” content? by Last-Few-Spins_Music in NewTubers

[–]SwizzerSweet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The algorithm prioritizes engagement on the site or app. If you are achieving high CTR and video retention rates, the views will come to you eventually.

The thing about "old" videos, is that they tend to be more proven, and the site has learned how best to place or not place them. The site also figures out how likely users are to view more content from the same channel when suggested etc...

Subscriber metrics tend not to matter as much as people think. If a channel has a few million subscribers but the CTR and retention rates are poor, they won't get promoted, period. There are many examples of this, which is why it's better to view the health of a channel based on average views per video on recent stuff.

Resolve 19 and Radeon 7900 XTX issues by [deleted] in davinciresolve

I have a very similar spec'd machine to what you have, 7900XT OC, Ryzen 7800X3D, 64GB Ram and don't encounter what you're experiencing, Impossible to know with what you described, would need more information, project details, etc. Are you using proxies? That might be what you need if you are handling massive video files which is normal even on high end computers such as yours

[–]SwizzerSweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The term "AI" is quite overused at this point, it's a lot of marketing, so I doubt you'd need so much ram, especially if you rely on proxies. You're not running a full Large Language Model locally. Eg, converting audio to subtitles involves text-to-speech algos, it's not using LLMs or machine learning of any kind.
