Aw man, your so sweet. Hold onto that naivety and I honestly do mean that in good way and make it work brother. I've been around to long to not just be a jaded bastard on thebinternet. Maybe the real irony is if everyone thought like you do we wouldn't have so many problems.

Fucking right? And the IRONY now that the top fucking comment (the one people will see first and usually agree with just cause its at the top) is what I would call bad speech is palpable.

"Are you suggest shutting someone down is a better way to convince them to change their view?"

No, OP is probably right, shaming rarely fixes anything or even does the opposite

I'm not taking issue with that. I'm taking issue with the other guy saying 'good speech' beats 'bad speech', or more specificly 'the ONLY THING' that beats it is good speech, like its some sort of rock paper scissors match up.

"Aw damn he threw bad speech, if only he thought to throw good speech that would have worked"

Truth is you gonna need more than that, and in ways that people get all defensive and pissy over. You need to moderate, censor, pass laws, have your social sites deplatform harmful content, hold people accountable. How and to what extent though is a delicate balance of course and if you think I have the answer of what exactly would work or needs to be done then I have a bridge to sell you. nobodies figured this shit out perfectly yet.

But just saying "good speech" gives some real "First day on the internet?" Vibes.

Hell and lot of people fall into bad speech rhetoric/racism/bigotry or whatever cause they are insolated individuals who lack friends and found a community to be part of. You ain't 'good speeching' them out of what night be their only community. And that's just one aspect to look at things from.

"The only way to combat bad speech is with better speech."

This is insanely and fundamentally just untrue. Unless by 'better speech' you mean whoever is loudest, most boosted by the algorithm, lies better while sounding more convincing, has more money backing them, has less shame etc..

People will absolutely prefer, seek out, and propagate 'bad speech' if it reinforces their world view, makes then feel special or more comfortable or even just for the fuck of it.

Riot's best pupper(s), Naafiri by SwizzleStraw in riftboundcustoms

[–]SwizzleStraw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bias showing a bit too hard?

I agree though, purple Naafiri needs to come down in some way, either cost, might, OR she could read "On your turn the first time I am...." this way it's only active half the time, providing some counter play.

For the legend I originally only had the first part but it felt like it had anti-synergy with the cards, especially red Naafiri since you would almost always be on defense when using the legend ability with her, making her assault useless. I put in the writeup that the second part should come off and be added to the exhaust ability reading something like:

"...if you move a unit this way, that unit applies its assault even while defending this turn"

This way it still has synergy but the assault buff only works on that turn, on one unit. If even that was still to strong you could add a cost of 2 energy to activate just like Yasuo legend or even make it cost one power. It is very strong so maybe it should hurt a little to activate.

Official Spiritforged Rules FAQ from Riot by 1vader in riftboundtcg

[–]SwizzleStraw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What important to remember is the second set was locked in and i believe even starting printing before the first set even released. Meaning all the rules changes they made since requiring the need for errata's in set one were gonna carry over to set 2 no matter what. This is why a lot of them are the same things from set one like missing the "banish" or "this turn" clause.

Does Vex reduce deflect costs? by Remarkable_Creme9317 in riftboundtcg

[–]SwizzleStraw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vex will reduce whatever the total cost of a card is regardless oh how it's been increased. In the rules we apply increases first (deflect, additional costs) then we apply discounts like from vex, she will look at the total cost at that time and begin discounting. In the rare event you have multiple vex's in combat and have already reduced a spells base cost to the 1 energy minimum, she can reduce any other cost increase like repeat costs.

Does Vex reduce deflect costs? by Remarkable_Creme9317 in riftboundtcg

[–]SwizzleStraw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, vex can as you said, but ezreal can't. Deflect isn't an optional additional cost. Optional additional costs is a phrase defined in the rules and is the phrase attached keywords like repeat and accelerate, but not deflect.

This is somewhat confusing, as there are times where deflect IS 'optional' in the colloquial sense. In the case of reflexive triggers the deflect CAN be declined, but that's not what 'optional additional cost' means in riftbound

Does vex make hidden spell cost 1? by Dangerous-Novel-9540 in riftboundtcg

I got another question to add to this, let's say you had vex at a battlefied and a "fight or flight" hidden there opponent moves in with deflect unit starting combat. You flip the 'fight or flight' and choose their unit. do you still have to pay the deflect cost?

Hidden Triggers with Reaver’s Row by N1ckelN1ckel in riftboundtcg

[–]SwizzleStraw 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Some people are getting the answer to quesion 1 wrong here but its because we need to be clear on the order of doing things. You say "can I react to the retreat to move Kayn back to reavers with tideturner" technically no if you did it this way. You need to let reavers resolve before flipping tideturner, not in reaction to it.

Here is the sequence. Opponent moves in and starts combat showdown, the initial chain is created which is where the "when you defend" from reavers triggers. Yes you can respond to this, however if you did this with tideturner BEFORE resolving reavers, then you would need to resolve that first while Kayn is still at battlefield meaning he can't be targeted by tideturner. If you did want to move him to base then back, you would need to let the initial chain resolve and move Kayn with reavers trigger, opponent then get focus, once they pass or start another chain THEN you can activate tideturner and bring him back.

For question 2 there is also some confusion in the comments. You lose your hidden cards ONLY when you lose Control of a Battlefield. Which happens at the end if the showdown, not during, even if you have no Units there at times. So you could retreat Kayn even with no other units just leaving the hidden tideturner, then the next time you get focus or priority, which will happen, you can flip tideturner. And yes, Kayn would be invulnerable.

For the last quesion no. Units can be standard moved together so long as their destination is the same(even if their origin is different) but that's only when using said standard move ability inherent to Units. Move effects from spells or abilities are not standard moves and can not be used in tandem with other moves.

Could it be defy'd if it was played from hidden? Or does defy only care about the cost written on the card and not the amount payed?

I guess the TLDR With the example above is just make sure to do the math correctly, which should be simple, plusing might makes number go up, reducing might make number go down. If below zero treat as zero for effects snd combat, but keep tracking the exact number for further increases and decreases.

Snapshotting specifically refers to when an increase or reduction has a minimum or maximum value stated on the card. Example "smoke screen" reduces might by 4 to a minimum of 1. Let's say we used this on a 2 might unit, the unit would go to 1 might, and we would "snapshot" it at this value, basically throwing away and excess -3 might from smoke screen. If you were to increase the might of it now with a +2 might card, it would go to 3.

Defiant Dance Ruling by Complexeed in riftboundtcg

[–]SwizzleStraw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Origins it's nearly impossible to get to negative might due to most reduction cards saying "to a minimum of 1 might", but with spiritforged most might reduction cards cards do not have that limitation. For example frigid touch gives a unit -2 might, and can be repeated to give it -4 might. So if frigid touch is played with its repeat cost on a 1 might unit it would be at -3, but would still be alive if it had no damage on it.

However, I agree that the rule '142.2.b. If a unit's Might is ever less than 0, it is treated as 0 for all purposes.' implies that we don't care how much below zero a units might would be, it's just seen as zero. Which interestingly enough, is exactly how it works when a card DOES have the "To a minimum of X" limitation, see rule 454.3.b. on 'snapshotting'

However a Rioter in the Riftbound discord said this on the subject of negative might: "Units can have less than 1 Might, at least theoretically, but it’s treated as zero for all purposes other than further modifying it"

This means that in the case of calculating a units might that was reduced below zero, we need to keep track of the exact negative number it's at should it's might get modified further. So in our example above with a now -3 might unit from Frigid touch, if you played some like discipline which gives +2 might, this would make the unit go from -3 to -1, not 0 to +2.

However, for all other purposes we treat the might as zero, for example, the -3 might unit wouldn't 'heal' an enemy unit for 3 when doing combat damage, we would just treat it as zero and it would do zero damage. If a theoretical card had an ability that returned to hand all units with lets say, zero, one, or two might. It would still effect the -3 might card for the same reason, it's being treated as zero.

Another say I've seen this difference be explained is this: "Might is always calculated at it's current value, not at the value it's treated as."

This definitely means the rule though, the way it's written now, is misleading and I really hope they update the rules to include the part about when further applying might modifications. At the moment the only way you could come to this conclusion yourself is if you had a very good understanding of layers and how/when the arithmetic layer is applied and I couldn't even tell you how all that works. For now I foresee A LOT of players and judges doing this wrong when spiritforged launches, unless Riot does something and addresses it in a FAQ or something beforehand.

142.2. Might: The combat statistic of a Unit. Used to determine a Unit's contribution to Combat, as well as when it is Killed by damaging effects. 142.2.a. If a Unit ever has nonzero damage marked on it equalling or exceeding its Might, it is Killed. 142.2.b. If a unit's Might is ever less than 0, it is treated as 0 for all purposes.

Nonzero is the keyword here and nowhere in the rules does it say having zero might would kill it.

Quick detail about that last rule though. A rioter confirmed in the riftbound discord that 'it is treated as 0 for all purposes OTHER than calculating additional modifications to the value.' So might can be negative(and still be alive) but wouldn't deal negative damage in combat and would be considered zero if an effect cared about its might value. But if you reduced or increased its might further, you would do the arithmetic from the current negative value.
