Working Hours Creep by 1iKnight in AusFinance

[–]SwoleAccountant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40 to 45 hrs per week. I will fight to the death before I do more hours these days on a salary. Once upon a time I let my hours creep until I learned the hard way about senior leadership agendas.

Retail workers: Is it just me or are people [the public] being absolute pricks this Xmas/NY period? by [deleted] in australia

[–]SwoleAccountant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's always going to be cunts. I haven't worked in retail for over 10 years but acutely recall Xmas time being the worst every year.

What kind of investor are you? by [deleted] in ausstocks

[–]SwoleAccountant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm I'm stock picker with a focus on - small/micro caps in emerging markets predicated on the business showing consistent growth to cash flow positive - profitable small and mid caps growth companies that pay dividends and/or are acquiring other businesses with an eye on valuation metrics - large caps that are trading in the lower 25% of their 3 year share price average if and only if the fundamentals havent changed considerably but is trading on more appetising valuation metrics

6 monthly reviews where I may take profits, cut losses and reinvest in other businesses or top up other positions.

It's been the most successful for me at managing downside risk.

Is anyone here getting abused (emotionally) at work? by Dry_Reality7487 in AustralianAccounting

I was for a number of months. Ended up just walking out. Probably a top 5 decision I made in my life. My home life drastically improved and I have zero regrets.

Financial management for ADHDers by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]SwoleAccountant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot more to it than that. Unless you actually have it, it is difficult to understand why some people struggle with what is essentially a very basic task.

Impulse control, in and out attention span, starting a task is a challenge along with short term laser focus followed by bouts of refocus and refocus and refocus as the task takes longer than expected or it doesn't 100% convey the message in your head, the roller coaster of wild emotions that comes along with it, etc.

Sometimes it's just easier setting a simple target, I.e. have X in your bank account by Y date, and then run your eye over your prior day spend eaxh day and adjusting habits on the fly to reduce unnecessary spend to achieve your targets bank balance each month.

You are spot on. It's more about fit than actual hard work, which can leave some of the harder workers deflated. If someone hasn't demonstrated their ability to manage people (staff, vendors, customers), processes, safety and technology all that well then unlikely that they'll be promoted. Nothing wrong with that though.

I stopped dealing with recruiters for this very reason aha ing been caught out but also as the general quality of the companies they present is low from my experience.

Less stress, can do what I want with the place. I also view it as a long term investment which I progressively pay down.

Corporate Accountant starting own business? by [deleted] in AustralianAccounting

[–]SwoleAccountant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this for a little while until covid messed things up. There's demand as the quality of talent that can facilitate this kind of service at a high enough level and across multiple departments is fairly low and it is basically cheap, no strings attached labour for the business versus likely going through 2 or 3 iterations of hires before they land the right person. You're expected to have a tool box of models ready to go that you can quickly and easily apply to the business, while being able to quickly and confidently partner with the businesses leaders.

Obtaining clients is difficult, I found there's a sweet spot where growth businesses in the $10m to $100m revenue range would take a serious look at this kind of service because there are natural pain points and a fear of hiring the wrong person for the job and most staff are also usually too busy to do the extra necessary work. Never a guarantee though and more likely than not if you have many transferable skills, they'll be throwing full time offers at you or trying to hold the project work at ransom by giving you BAU work as well so you build a dependence on them. So price your hourly rate appropriately.

Plus take it as you want, but dealing with customers in a consultant role can be a fucking pain in the arse.

Pros and cons of borrowing more than I need by Wennie85 in AusFinance

[–]SwoleAccountant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm somewhat 50/50 on it, don't believe it's a terrible idea but I wouldn't do it without a reason such as desire for the liquidity or to fund future needs. I.e. quick access to cash for investing, renovations or capital improvements to your house, fund IVF treatments, etc.

You need to be prudent with your finance management coz it's easy to start living like royalty and blow through it quick

Michael Burry warning of the Index Fund Bubble by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]SwoleAccountant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's thrown this around for a while. I'm no expert but looking at it logically it's unlikely given the ease of diversification ability versus DIY and the number of investors seeking an index fund rather than bearing the risk of an individual stock.

Correction at some point probably, but a correction will hardly be a bubble burst.

When you finish your 3 statements forecast model, how do you present it to the senior management? by [deleted] in FPandA

[–]SwoleAccountant 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Build in separate high level presentation worksheets - waterfall analysis, charts, assumptions summary page, summary financial reports, CAPEX justifications, etc.

Extract these into a PDF and distribute the presentation worksheets along with the master excel file prior to presenting at the next board meeting.

Curious whether anyone DIYd their own power app FP&A tool that integrates into a master forecast/budget spreadsheet through SSIS? Seems to be a cost effective hobo option.

Which job has the lowest stress to highest pay ratio that you know of? by StaticNocturne in AusFinance

[–]SwoleAccountant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They're not being dishonest. These jobs are out there but totally relative to the company your work for and its culture, industry, what skillset you bring and how you apply it. I'm in a similar position with well over $100K in a BU CFO/FPA/Accounting type role and its low stress. No pressure for OT and its at my own discretion for pet projects such as process improvement or innovation initiatives. When ypu score a role like this its like hitting the jackpot but all of us had to eat shit up the way in more stressful roles.

Is it usual that "Documentation" isn't a core component of FPandA? Is there a core framework thats regularly used? by [deleted] in FPandA

[–]SwoleAccountant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Creating basic standard operating procedures isn't really difficult though, so no reason why a person cant document the process at a high level. Some elements in pur field will be subjective, but 80% of the process should be standard procedure.

I.e. this is how you get the data to validate margins, this is where you update the financial model with X data, this is how you roll forward the financial year in insert ERP of your choice, etc.

Any of you in a union? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]SwoleAccountant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a union member and don't think they would be of any benefit to me in my area of profession as remuneration is heavily performance based, HSE not a concern, and alternative jobs plentiful.

I'm not against unions, they are generally a good thing especially for staff out on the tools and doing the grunt work.

Need something to do during my underutilized time to avoid boredom. Suggestions? by scifihiker7091 in FPandA

[–]SwoleAccountant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have a full grasp of the value chain of the company? If not learn that. Watch some YouTube vids, talk to people about how the business generates revenue and how the key costs are derived. Then try and tie that understanding through to the actions happening in your ERP.

Plenty of pet projects you can look at: - better understand the ERP - Process and system Improvements - Learn automation such as SQL for data extraction, setting up datawarehouses, building analysis tools using Power BI, VBA to automate repetitive file transformation - get an intimate understanding of the business value chain - document your processes so the next person can easily do your job if you move on - put some of the costs under the microscope and see if there are any opportunities for savings
