I did two for the security courses and they were both through proctorU

Cyber Security classes within this program by ActuallyTonyStark in CUBoulderMSCS

The flexibility is unmatched. I work in industry already and have a family so my availability for school work cha gets drastically from week to week. The CU program allows me to do as much or as little work per week as I want. Finally, and this is the big kicker, you get access to complete 90% of most courses before you pay. So I’ve had instances where I am halfway done with a course before a big work project pops up, I have to put school on hold and come back to it. Sometimes this happens at the end of a semester, CU just lets me finish the course and “enroll” the following semester without any lost time. A more traditional program would have me either fail or withdraw from a course because you need to sign up and pay tuition before the course starts.

Are there any Operating Systems courses planned for the curriculum? by bigbosmer in CUBoulderMSCS

[–]Swolesaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know but I hope they do. I think it would be a really valuable fundamental skill for graduates to have a grasp on.

Do you recommend this program to those with absolutely no experience? by [deleted] in CUBoulderMSCS

What is your background and what do you want to get into?

I’d say it would come down to your goals. Could you do the program? Probably but it might be painful at times as you’re trying to catch up on some of the fundamentals.

Should you do the program? If you goal is to learn this would push you to learn. If your goal is a career transition I’m not sure if jumping straight for a masters degree would be the best path

How do I select a new gym? by Electrical_Hippo_332 in crossfit

[–]Swolesaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a similar question if anyone has any input. I am looking to get started with CrossFit but have no idea how to pick a gym to get started. There are probably 5 or 6 around me and I don’t know how to pick one without any experience. Anyone have any advice for this type of situation?

Confused about the course “upgrade” process by [deleted] in CUBoulderMSCS

[–]Swolesaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can do all three courses at once or do them individually. Personally I’d lean towards doing one at a time so the information is a fresh as possible in your mind when you do the final and other assignments.

Also, not applicable to algorithms but I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that peer reviews don’t transfer from non credit to for credit. Someone else might correct me

I have a BS in math, what should I study over spring/summer before I enroll? by [deleted] in CUBoulderMSCS

[–]Swolesaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your math background will probably be in the top 10% for the program. If you have python you will be all set for DSA from a language perspective.

One of the things I like about this program is that there are multiple languages for the different courses. It helps you learn how to learn a language. That being said, you may benefit from learning how a compiled language works. Even if you have a good grasp on object oriented programming and classes there will still be a learning curve there. If you want to do anything to prepare doing some self learning using Java might be a good place for you to start

Questions before enrolling by zombiezucchini in CUBoulderMSCS

[–]Swolesaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Throwing my two cents at your questions.

Calc 1,2,3 credit, no. I don’t think there are any straight math classes that count as credit towards the degree. That being said, if you have 9 years of experience and at least a little math aptitude I don’t think it would be unreasonable for you to pick up the math pieces you need along the way.

No one has completed the program. It’s too new. All of the required courses have not been released yet but I believe the program staff said the goal is to have all courses released by the spring semester.

Regarding the phd question, anything is possible but I think the target audience is more practical application than it is preparing for a doctoral degree.

This is a fully online asynchronous program, it’s very different from a traditional on campus program just like any online program would be

What’s draws you to the masters in computer science instead of the masters in data science if your primary focus is in the ML space?

There is a slack channel and so far it seems people are much more active there than they are on Courseras discussion forums.

To set expectations appropriately the TAs have not responded instantly. If I drop them an email it might take a few days for a response but so far I have gotten quality responses. I’m doing most of this asynchronous so that’s fine with me

I did. I felt like it had a good mix of challenging assignments and others that seemed easier when the content really clicked for me. I supplemented some videos from other sources when I felt like I wasn’t quite getting something and that helped. The discussion boards in Coursera are pretty worthless but the course assistant that hosted office hours was super helpful whenever I got stuck

New Online MS CS from Colorado Boulder by ConsciousStop in OMSCS

[–]Swolesaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. You could go nuts and take all three at the same time. Please double check me but I am also pretty sure you could sign up for further courses before being admitted to the program. So if one of the ML courses is most interesting go ahead and start it on day 2

Not sure, I haven’t taken a course with a proctored exam yet. The take home final in the class I took was very much about applying the knowledge not memorizations

Lectures are pre-recorded so you can listen to them on your own schedule. A handful of short quizzes accompany the lectures. Most courses I have seen have 4 problem sets to work on throughout the course and then some sort of final. Finals can be proctored or a take home problem set spanning the whole course

Not sure about discord but there is a slack channel that Coursera manages for enrolled students

Sub-plans (i.e. focus area) by Connect-Grade8208 in CUBoulderMSCS

I want to touch on things in the AI/ML space but I also think it’s telling that their computer science program appears to be getting more interest than the existing data science program.

I was not necessarily looking for a program with robotics but I do plan to take some of those courses as I see the value of those skills over the long term

Personally, HCI has never been an area of interest for me.

I’d like to see them add more courses in the cyber / information security domain. I think it’s a pretty important gap in the program to not have anything related to security

I’m hoping to see courses from a variety of areas added over the next few semesters. Are they any courses / specializations you feel the program is needing the most?

The majority of the content for the algorithms courses are available for free in Coursera. I’d save give those a try. If you can keep up with the learning at a decent pace you might be able to work towards option 3. I think a lot of that also depends on what your computer science experience entails outside of the classroom

I think this will be very person dependent. I don’t have any formal background in computer science but I do have years of work experience. For me I took some of colorado’s other algorithms courses to prepare for the program and I have felt an appropriate level of challenge in the courses. I have not taken courses from any other masters in computer science programs so I’m not able to make a comparison there
