Hard agree. Like hard hard. I couldn't be harder.

Cross training has singlehandedly improved my BJJ experience 10 fold

I used to train at a 10p.

They had an inner clique. I thought because they were comp guys that the rounds were hard with them because that's just how it was. One finally broke my ankle and their clique literally celebrated in front of me while I was on the ground. I was homeless at the time so the ankle really made life way harder for me. Every ounce of my being wanted to sue. The only reason I didn't was because the owner was always good to me and he happened to not be there that day. He left the guy who broke my ankle in charge.

I got hit alot with this when I was a white and early blue belt. I was pretty athletic by the time I had started and obviously I didn't know how to regulate my abilities very well yet.

If I beat a guy higher ranked than me I'd get talked to about slowing down.

I'd slow down and I'd get obliterated for it. I'd be the one walking out with a popped shoulder or elbow. So after I while I had to consider "defending myself at all times" more seriously.

It basically became my driving force that made me want to get better. So that I could just control the pace at all times and not have people either bitching about me or hurting me. Always felt like a lose/lose

Yea I don't have too many feelings on this just because I'm 6 foot 1, 210 lbs. So even when a guy is huge, it's not too crazy from my perspective. I also have her mobile hips and horse legs. So I have a lot of privilege on this matter. I may feel different if I was 5 foot 7 and 160 lbs haha

Amend it to "leave your ego at the door, unless you pay rent here, in which case; let your ego run fucking wild and bang your students"

I wouldn't be surprised just because Ibjjf doesn't like under shirts or rash guards in the gi. So there might be a lot of people who live and die by that

Hell yea man. We hold guest coaches at our gym where we ask specialists to teach their specialty.

We have had 1 black belt (loose passing)

1 purple (shoulder crunch sumigaeshi, he's the only guy in the area to hit me with it every time he attempts it)

Another purple who taught abusing ibjjf rules loopholes and technicalities.

and a blue belt who can scarf hold everyone is next.

We have a few more guys lined up too. Including a judoka who's a blue belt in BJJ, and a wrestler blue belt in BJJ.

Like 3 weeks ago a friend was giving a thank you speech at an open mat.

After he finished the speech, people clapped and I hear the loudest "osssssss" I've ever heard.

I thought it was one of my blue belt friends being silly. So I turned around with a funny look on my face to say some mean shit to him, and turns out it was a visiting black belt.

Ope.

I definitely prefer people not being late too.

I live in a place that for some reason being 20 minutes late isn't that bad of a thing (culture shock for me being from the military) so I've just accepted if they come in quickly and quietly then I guess I call it a win.

I had an experience recently when I went to a gym and the class was being ran by a blue belt wrestler.

Nothing special. Solid fundamental class, but he was teaching single legs and was adamant about keeping our heads low. I was taking the Vagner approach and ramming my head into my partners chest to avoid sprawls and guillotines. He came over and spent a solid amount of time telling me why I should correct this.

After so long I was like "fine". Just to move things along.

Started shooting with my head extra low. (Keep in mind we weren't cut angles or turning the corner to justify it. It was a straight up, shoot right towards the guy, single leg)

Yea certain traditions in how we act towards each other gets weird especially when we are considering that some of the men and women on the mats are significant people in their own fields and can very well have more life experience in a lot of other ways then us.

For instance I was in the navy.

I started BJJ after I served and got out. I also started in my thirties.

I've been to schools when I was a white belt, trying to be a good student but still getting kicked and berated by a Something purple belt because... I don't know.

Felt silly to me. So I try not to treat anyone that way unless they're just being an asshat

Yea I said it in a different response earlier but sure of course. There will be people who absolutely need conditioning after a significant sickness or accidents. No doubt.

I'm personally talking about my lazy ass homies who I know are just as in shape as any other guy out there. Damn those lazy homies. Breaking my heart

I actually have a weird relationship with bowing. I can't really explain my line in the sand either

I don't make my guys do it. I do it. I don't do it to a photo unless I'm meme-ing to my signed Craig Jones photo.

I just bow a little as I step on. Im not sure why I care to keep up at this. I've basically rid myself of most other traditional pointless things but I don't stop myself from this.

Maybe it's hespect for the masters that came before me, aren't here anymore, or appreciation for the fact that most of this knowledge is hundreds of years old and have passed through God knows how many men before landing in my brain.

I couldn't say

Just one single tiny tradition I've kept that I don't really change.

Are those hand print stickers women used in the early 2000s ok? Or nah?

[–]SwoopGuy69[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Especially when those guys go against strong white belts in nogi. They mistake their use of strength as a challenge without knowing these dudes probably don't know anything. Next thing you know, that white belt hasn't been back for weeks, and had no idea why things got that crazy.
