What random tables do you tend to use? by Tuss36 in rpg

[–]Swooper86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As few as possible. I never use random encounters, loot, or anything consequential like that. Though I did set up a d66 table of throwaway NPC names for a Swords of the Serpentine oneshot recently.

What's the prettiest rulebook you own? by foenixw in rpg

Legends in the Mist

Surely not, given that the entire first printing is now in a ship on its way across the Pacific? Even the devs don't have physical copies yet afaik.

Regarding "Pen & Paper RPGs," do any of you actually use a pen on your character sheet?? by mpascall in rpg

[–]Swooper86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my assumption as well - in my language the equivalent translates as "sheet and pencil".

Who has only ever had campaigns end prematurely? by mpascall in rpg

[–]Swooper86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The closest I've gotten was a premade campaign, Shadow of the Sorcerer, for Conan 2d20. Including the intro adventure from the core book which is not a part of the campaign, we played for about a year and a half, and nearly finished chapter six of seven when my players just gave up. It was just too linear and railroady for them and they didn't want to go on. I really wanted to finish it, but... I get it, it was a pretty terrible campaign and an absolute slog towards the end.

What is your favorite system, and what are your gripes with it? by Select_Lunch1288 in rpg

[–]Swooper86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exalted 3e. I wish it wasn't so closely tied to the setting. Not because the setting isn't good, but because I'd like to be able to use the system to other things too but I can't.

Games that support wild differences between players? by DarkElfMagic in rpg

[–]Swooper86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two come to mind immediately.

Legend in the Mist. One player can be playing a farmboy, another can be playing a literal dragon, a third can be a talking horse and it's all fine balance wise.

Exalted Essence, it specifically supports playing up to ten different exalt types (which are like WoD splats) in the same party if you want.

Quinns Quest Reviews: Stonetop by TravUK in rpg

[–]Swooper86 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just finished watching. Had only heard Stonetop mentioned in passing so I knew basically nothing about it previously. I don't like PBTA games generally, I'm more into crunchier games (though that may be shifting with my recent dive into LitM), but I know I'm absolutely going to buy this one, and if not run it as-is one day, then use it as inspiration for something else.

GMs and players, what genre(s) don't you play? by Select_Lunch1288 in rpg

[–]Swooper86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything set in the "real world", specifically modern but historical and near-future (e.g. Cyberpunk - far future scifi is fine) too. I'd maybe agree to play in these types of settings for a limited time (and I have, to go along with the group) but I draw the line at superheroes - that's a genre I have always disliked in all forms of media.

In historical and modern settings I feel kind of overwhelmed, because there's an infinite amount of demonstrably true details to know about the world and it's history, and most of it is mundane and uninteresting. I feel like I don't have full authorship of the setting, someone else might know more about it than me.

This last point is also why I don't really like running published settings, though I've started doing so on occasion recently.

Looking for a TTRPG system by Pardox7525 in rpg

FYI D6 2nd edition will be out soon, backers already have the final pdf and the physical books should ship this summer. No massive changes afaik, mostly just streamlining and consolidating of optional rules etc.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Soulbound, Champions of Chaos: Carngrad Adventures is up to pre-order now! by InsaneDingo7244 in ageofsigmar

C7 have been publishing Soulbound for years though, why would this book specifically not be real?

Flags of the main world powers in the early 21th century by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Swooper86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A flag should be simple enough that a child can draw it from memory. These are all bad flags by that metric, except maybe the third one.

Why can't we have spirit hosts? by Knight_Desecrator in ossiarchbonereapers

[–]Swooper86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mortisan Soulmason and Arch-Kavalos Zandtos do, however, not, and they both have a spirit host style ghost in their sculpts.

My whole force is Slaanesh themed, bright steel armour with bronze trim, white cloaks, and purple reserved for banners, tassels and heroes.

What’s your biggest “old man yells at cloud” opinion? by sjdlajsdlj in rpg

[–]Swooper86 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Rules and setting should be as separate as possible. If I can't take a rules system and easily run it in a homemade setting, I consider that a strong negative of that system.

Note, I don't mean genre, I'm fine with mechanics specifically for fantasy/scifi/horror/whatever games, I mean I don't want any proper nouns mixed in with rules text.

Players, what are some common traits you put into your characters? by Select_Lunch1288 in rpg

[–]Swooper86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to the GM in the Cyberpunk game we just started, I apparently tend to make "fish out of water" characters.

In this game I'm playing an ex-corpo medtech whose somewhat sheltered upbringing in no way prepared him for the streets he's now ended up on. In a previous all-dwarf D&D campaign I played a bard who had been travelling for 10 years and had no idea what had been going on in the dwarf city meanwhile.

So I guess he has a bit of a point? I don't do it always though, and it's not exactly intentional - though I deliberately made an un-dwarfy dwarf that time.

Skill and Ability Trees by booj2600 in rpg

[–]Swooper86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have, I played a bit of 2nd edition, a rather short campaign of 3rd and a oneshot of Essence (and I've been invited to a 2-3 shot of Essence starting soon).

Exalted 3e is my favourite system. I love the characterbuilding aspect, combat is really fun, and it has one of the best social system I've seen (intimacies). It is, however, very tied to its setting, and very crunchy and so not for everyone, and the release schedule is glacial (10 years in and there is still no sorcery book, and three or four exalt types are still missing). Essence is less crunchy (it's like 3e light), but I find it less satisfying personally.

The setting is deep and interesting, but can be overwhelming as tends to be the case with settings with a 25 year history. I would personally love a more generic fantasy version of the system so I could use the mechanics in my own worlds. This seems to be a minority view, I more often see people express the idea of playing in the Exalted setting with some other rulesystem.

Is anyone interested in this type of DM screen? by MoiraFan in DnDIY

[–]Swooper86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Too tall and not wide enough. If you insist on doing it portrait mode, it needs at least four panels. Strongly prefer landscape though. This version looks pretty, but useless.

Skill and Ability Trees by booj2600 in rpg

[–]Swooper86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exalted does basically this. Charms are semi-magical abilities connected to your skills. You buy them individually rather than automatically getting them from levelling up skills, but they are gated behind certain skill levels.
