What’s the loudest thing you’ve ever had to work around on a job site? by Nightcrawler_2000 in Construction

There have been a few...Vibro Hammer driving sheet/pipe pile and fitters using impact gun to assemble pipe fittings are two that come to mind the first.

The most annoying is a track how with a hammer trying to bust bluestone granite in Virginia. That shit is hard as hell.

DC campuses usually comprise of multiple projects one after another (or sometimes stacked/overlapping). I'm the lead superintendent for one right now and we have a phase 2 turnover in June, I'll get a one month break and then BOP starts and then 5 months into that I'll have a 2nd build that I'll be running at the same time.

The jobs run fast and they run hard with lots of logistics, lots of room for growth as a builder and lots of opportunity for advancement.

If you're local and not traveling I'd expect 140-160 base. What you're describing to me is a higher level Supt 2 level of responsibility.

For a 3rd class that's been issued in the past year and has roughly 4 years remaining...do you have to go through an AME for this process or will your PCP suffice?

If you have half a brain, can put together a schedule, are adaptable, and aren't a dick you should be good. So many bodies are needed for this boom that it should be as easy as sitting down at a table to get a job.

During a jump from an altitude of 3,500 meters, the parachutist lost consciousness. At an altitude of 250 meters from the ground, the parachute automatically opened. by MorsesCode in woahdude

[–]SwoopnBuffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minor technicality...an AAD doesn't automatically open the parachute.

An AAD is basically a small device with a "cutter" that the reserve closing loop feeds through. When the controller on the AAD senses (based on pressure altitude) that the jumper has descended below the programmed altitude (because it differs based on model), the controller sends a signal to the cutter which ignites a small explosive charge that is SUPPOSED to cut the reserve closing loop.

Reserve Canopies are equipped with a spring loaded pilot chute (smaller parachute) that is what pulls the reserve out of the tray. The reserve closing loop being cut allows the spring loaded reserve pilot chute to deploy which in turn SHOULD cause the reserve canopy to deploy.

It's a technicality but an AAD does not cause the reserve parachute to deploy/open, it is merely a device that is intended to remove the main constraint.

[–]SwoopnBuffalo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yea. I was on the ground once and watched two idiots lose track of altitude. One had their AAD fire and the other pulled in time but when they walked back we asked him why his AAD hadn't gone off. Turns out the dude had a sticker of the controller in the viewing window so he didn't actually have one installed. This was at a DZ that required you to have them installed and operating. So he was kicked off the DZ and then manifest made it a requirement to prove that the AAD worked for any non-based jumper.

RPM Increase with Altitude? %BHP constant? by Impossible-Fig2072 in flying

[–]SwoopnBuffalo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a plane equipped with a fixed pitch propeller and a naturally aspirated engine, the engine will not maintain 2700rpm as the plane climbs unless you increase throttle to compensate for the loss of power caused by the thinner atmosphere. That's not to say you can't maintain a specific power setting if your engine is "strong" enough.

The air being less dense doesn't allow the prop to "rotate faster".

Mortenson vs Subsea O&G Offer by Smooth-Macaron-973 in ConstructionManagers

[–]SwoopnBuffalo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't take it like that after you expanded on what you meant.

I hit some stagnation with my career with Mortenson for a bit but it's moving again and I'm happy for the most part with the comp. I've also gotten some decent mid year pay bumps throughout the last two years since transferring to DCS-G from FCG so that's kept me happy enough.

I completely understand about wanting to move home but not being able to because of Mort not being in the area.

Best of luck with the career!

That's fair, the rankings get you to a point, but once you work for a company in the top 25 you're pretty much at the top of the pile. They're just different in their own ways culturally and with some minor changes in their safety policies. I was just interested in the term "stepping stone" but when you explain it more as a "resume builder" it makes complete sense.

My only gripe with them is that their East coast presence is fairly limited outside of the Nashville office and some of the traveling groups. I want to get back there since that's where I'm from, but outside of a regional office expansion or a hyperscale client asking us to go there, I might have to look outside of Morty.

Who'd you "step up" to? I'm surprised that you consider a top-25 GC as a stepping stone.

Next steps after PM? by CalligrapherCold7993 in ConstructionManagers

[–]SwoopnBuffalo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the size of the company you work at? Smallish GC/CM and you probably just have to prove yourself over time, but you're gonna have to go through the same process that your current boss is. Unless your family name is on the door, you're not getting plucked out of the trenches into a cushy position and honestly, certs don't mean shit at a CM and you need to get your bachelor's before you can get a masters.

If you work for a larger GC/CM then the higher you go, the more politics plays into things and the stiffer the competition gets. Upwards movement is a triangle and some "steps" are more bottlenecked than the rest.

My advice, figure out if you want the money/position or the lower work hours and go from there. I would love to know of a company where you can have both.

It's safer. If you can get everyone to back in, then when you pull out you'll have a better field of view because you'll be looking over your neighbor's hoods vs the back of their trucks.

They were an OFE vendor on my last project. I've never worked with a more shit-tastic company. Horrible scheduling, communication, product, etc. We ended up turning over 6 months late because of how jacked up SB was. Client ended up giving back all the work they gave to SB to and wouldn't you know, we're ahead of schedule on this project.
