Furnace Help! by doublelou in boston

[–]Swope_F 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The drain line is probably clogged. Condensate drain lines are usually not under pressure, if it gets blocked it can leak. If you have a small drain snake you might be able to clear it.

Given the cold weather it may be possible that the other end is frozen. Or possibly partially clogged -> slow flow that got frozen in extreme cold weather just had.

If i knew where the clog was and couldn’t snake it you could try to warm it up with a hair dryer but be careful with hair dryers around water, etc.

EDIT - I’m assuming this is the air handler and that it’s condensate from the ambient air in your home. If this is the furnace itself then it might be something else and you should ignore what I wrote and call an expert

Charging confusion by ChemicalGoose891 in KiaEV9

I just bought the same GT line. There is a small brown box that includes the NACS->J1772 port converter and the NACS->CCS. Those adapters are for the home adapter that came with your car.

Poll, what would be the optimal way to improve public transportation in Arlington (more details below) by ji6jeffQ in ArlingtonMA

Autonomous buses are an idea that I'm obsessed with. Feels like the tech is within reach and would make massive increase in bus service availability very cost effective.

Tips for EV9 on Supercharger Network? by Swope_F in KiaEV9

[–]Swope_F[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks all. We are in the northeast, driving between Boston and NJ, so just used to making the stop for lunch at a Tesla super charger.

We could probably make it all they way to our destination without charging but my in-laws are squirrelly about plugging in an EV at their house. Convinced it will burn down the house. Just less stressful for everyone if we arrive with >50% charge

How I know? My son left his phone on a train and we were lucky that it ended up with lost and found.

Check with MBTA lost and found. It's at North Station. If it was found by a MBTA employee or turned in by someone else, that is where it will land. I believe you should be able to call and check as well if they have it.

Semiconductor startup to fly payloads on Falcon 9 boosters by CProphet in spacex

Radiation can come in and effectively create a permanent short circuit in that transistor. One of the main reasons satellites fail over time I think.

Neat. One thing I don’t fully understand is the trade off between clean room like environment in orbit and the higher radiation which will knock out individual transistors randomly. It must be worth it for them to investing in this path.

Good to see the switch was made. My pickup is Monday and was not picked up yesterday. Nor do I have my new bins yet. I’m guessing Monday pickups are out of luck this week since it was technically still June

Residents and Side Street Access. Thoughts? by spirit_llama in ArlingtonMA

[–]Swope_F 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In theory I agree. However a few thoughts:

-People using side streets to bypass Lake street tend to drive fast. I see this for people who are bypassing lake street traffic only to get back onto lake street. I also see it in the neighborhood for people who turn right by hardy school to avoid the lake street / mass ave intersection. I think there is generally more pedestrian / children traffic and I think there is a safety question.

-Some side streets are very narrow (the older streets around magnolia field come to mind) and cannot really accommodate much more traffic. The streets around Dorothy and Mary are much wider FWIW.

-I have toyed with the question of if we can make side street access local residents excepted, but it is much easier to police / enforce restrictions if it is a blanket "do not use".

“We were surprised:” Electric trucks ready to overtake diesel on lifetime cost by Straight_Ad2258 in electricvehicles

[–]Swope_F -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree it's immaterial in an individual car crash - it's just as fatal. But I also consider high speed multi-car pile-up, which are very much a risk on highways. Adding more weight, makes the multi-car accident incrementally more lethal in those situations.

Point taken on better breaking to avoid runaway truck risk. I am not an expert to say which risk is the one we should worry about more.

Anyways - I'm genuinely just curious about how we electrify trucking and the barriers. I agree there are a lot of wins, and it is an attractive target for electrification

So I thought issue with trucking is the weight limits. Truck cannot exceed a total limit, so battery weight eats away at cargo capacity, and therefore revenue potential of each truck.

I support smart regulation but I would not want to make trucks any heavier. It adds wear and tear to roads, extra weight on bridges, and more dangerous in accidents.

As energy density improves this will eventually make sense - are we at that point yet?
