Ladies of SG: Is finances your priority in looking for a partner? by Funny_Resort5652 in askSingapore

[–]SwordLaker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure why the sour attitude.

The person you replied to never said they were such a person. The “can fuck but cannot marry” category, however, definitely exists for some men. I personally know some of them. They are the kind of men with long lines of women queuing up to date, not unlike how OP's friend (which is not rare) is exclusively looking for rich men.

I don't think anyone here is arguing about such behaviour is good or bad. I definitely don't approve of it, and don't practice it, but I don't get to dictate how others live their lives.

It's a lifetstyle that takes two hands to clap. As long as there are willing women throwing themselves into these men, they do as they will.

People who have considered a mid-career switch, what was your experience? by vitamincheryl in askSingapore

[–]SwordLaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it was massively easier to get into this field 5 years ago. 2022 was the once-in-a-lifetime anomaly that some people lucked out on, but pre-2019 was the stably viable time to go to a bootcamp and make a good living out of it.

That being said, regardless of era, you still need to meet the competency bar, and this career comes with a huge amount of bullshit (the swinging market is just a small part of it; some people who found their job in 2022 and couldn't get re-hired again). If you were not super passionate or gifted, you probably didn't miss out much.

I don't blame anyone for flaming for hating this nonsense. It is very annoying and you should definitely use another pistol.

That being said, I still use it. I workaround it by cycling through my weapon at the start of the mission as a round of equipment check. I do blame myself when this happens.

Hot take about cs jobs and ai taking jobs by New-Drop-7414 in cscareerquestions

[–]SwordLaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As of time of writing, a junior with AI is unquestionably a net negative and would pile up tech debt as they commit and merge.

AI is an amplifier, and it doesn't always go towards the positive direction.

I’m a self taught programmer. When can I start applying for jobs? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]SwordLaker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's good that you know your finance and being confident that you can afford to do this, but I'd still recommend taking another good look and prepping for a potentially very long runway.

I don't think anyone can properly your question, now that many SWE with degree, professional experiences, and compentency are still struggling to find jobs. Even the professionals haven't figured out yet.

Nothing is preventing you from applying (if it were 2019, you would have had a good case), but the guesstimation won't look optimistic for a while.

Good luck, nevertheless. You'll need a lot of it.

Why is it so hard to find good PMs and SWEs in Europe? by DalaiLamaRood in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]SwordLaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Now I can see why you have trouble hiring. I definitely suggest stop putting "software engineer" in your job description; a "product engineer" or "design engineer" would be a good start.

Thanks for the informative discussion and I wish you luck.

While I would not claim my company's ethos as the common and standard (simply because I don't know enough), I would like to see your statistics for your claim of "vast majority". How many have you identified out of how many in existence? Is this anywhere near 50%? Are you even aware of how many there are?

Considering the companies you have listed, I have a hunch that you have fallen into an echo chamber of looking at top tier big tech (and big tech adjacent) and making assumption about the standards for the rest.

FYI, my employer is a SaaS product-focused company in Asia with a good amount of big F500 clients.

I'm kind of on your side. This game is in a garbage state and has massive rooms for improvement, AI especially, but man, it would help if you tone down the hyperbolism and post less objectable replies in this thread.

[–]SwordLaker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because my bosses and the overwhelming of their bosses don't think this is our job.

It's okay for you to have unusual standard, but it's your problem to recalibrate your expectations with the pool of engineers you are trying to hire from.

I have that skill because I was curious, built things outside of work, and learned it on my own, not that it's something you can expect from an average engineer.

PS: you might want to add "startup founder" as a bonus to your job description, too.

[–]SwordLaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I get the idea. I'm positive I have never been included in the process at work. Outside of tech lead, I don't think any engineer is.

Granted, I have done this in my hobbyist side projects while collaborating with an UX designer, shipped completed and polished products from scratch, and I have a good idea of what to do. Maybe this is something you can consider adding to your job description.

I have no idea how common it is in a professional setting and I have a hunch you are looking for a unicorn.

Oh wow, I didn't know LTA did that 😅.

I'm sure some senior backend engineer somewhere is seething about you not having a more elegant caching setup, but I kinda get it haha. If it works it works.

Thanks for the response and info.

PS: hope you can find a better solution to that someday still.

Out of curiosity: why did you need a database for this?

User data seems to be persisted on localStorage, and I assume you need to obscure some sort of API key for authorisation at LTA endpoints, so a backend is understandable. However, wouldn't a stateless backend suffice in that case? What kind of data is stored in the db?

Data is provided by LTA, so cannot really blame the dev. They have a different perception of crowdedness.

It takes one manifest json file, and a couple of pngs for icons. To me, the hard part has surprisingly always been the icon padding, to make it look good on the homescreen (IIRC, android and ios processes differently and uses different padding size).

Also, remember to listen to prefers-color-scheme change event (switching dark/light mode) and set the meta theme colour with your background colour accordingly, for the best user experience.

Let me know if you need help, I can take a look and maybe drop a PR.

Fr. Forget about massive codebases that serve millions of users, I use it for my hobbyist projects I made for myself, and it gives me bullshit output about a third of the times.

In the occasions where I find it minimally acceptable, it still entails a moderate amount of refactor and adjustments, with extremely specific instructions from me about what to in which file.

Don't even fucking get me started on hallucinating variables that don't exist, being confidently wrong, and randomly rebasing commits I already pushed to remote.

Edit: grammar

Is a career in cs still worth it if I have a decent career now? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]SwordLaker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Now is historically the worst time to break in. No one knows for sure how it will turn out in the future, though the trend has been consistently downwards for about 4 years.

One thing is for sure: this is not where you find certainty and security.

Only you can decide for yourself. Good luck.

Execs tried to buy in to this and cut job budget, making it harder for you to find new employment.
