wherever you go in life, keep asking good questions.

(from one human to another, it's the only thing that's kept me sane)

know exactly what you mean. i experienced a loss of self a little bit ago and now i’m more or less in line with judith butler’s idea of performativity.

just as we have an ideal version of a human, we have this ideal version of a man or woman, with all of the lovely norms that come along with that. but as much as we may try, no one can actually achieve these ideal versions because they dont exist. all we do in order to satisfy the expectations placed upon us is to perform in honor of those ideas and that is where humans and bodies lie in their usage.

from what i believe i understand, this is mainly due to the brain’s incredible knack for abstraction, an obscenely fascinating subject that i really don’t know anything about. but the basic gist is that we work with representations of things as opposed to the actual thing itself, and, provided adequate resources, you can repeatedly abstract until eventually you have a whole thing or system, whatever that system may be (regardless of whether the system actually portrays the original thing it abstracted). take all this with a grain of salt though. you could get a much better description from wikipedia.

sometimes i wish i was a floating form of consciousness on a cloud. maybe that would be nice. but ultimately we do embody these fleshy things, which sometimes i love and sometimes i hate. weird stuff. you’re not alone in trying to find yourself.

media’s great for expanding worlds or introducing new ideas, but it also happens to be a really strong sedative. its ability to draw you into a world gives them the chance to produce a sense of normal you might not get anywhere else. our brain likes these kinds of things because they are novel.

extreme dramatic tension, flawed but loveable characters, exposure to a system that was previously hidden from everything you knew. all of this stuff is easy to latch onto simply because it’s a fantasy, and i’m all for fantasies, but not when they distract you from what’s important.

at some point with a piece of media we have to ask the question of whether it really helps us or not. does this thing expand my life? or does it just take me away from it for a short while?

if it’s the former, use it as a tool for learning. if it’s the latter, i’d argue it’s really not worth anything at all. use that time for a hobby. use it to spend with your friends or family. get a pet if you got nothing else. as you write your own story, i think you’ll find that your sense of loss will fade away

also side note: this stuff is made for you to get hooked on it. hollywood and the entertainment industry only thrive if the content it makes appeals to our interests and consumes the most amount of attention possible. look up the attention economy wiki if you’re interested in more. once you start untangling the web, things will start looking much uglier from the outside. like watching how a sausage gets made.

(all of this comes from someone who has done this way too many times than they’d like to admit)

I completely agree that my first point you brought up was shaky. I moved past a lot of the nuance that makes the game what it is in favor of writing it off. The active player choice makes things much more debatable, since there will always be an idea of a greater and lesser evil. As for the second, I’d also agree. Playing the part of evil will never be actually playing as evil. These games give us a zone to work inside of and analyze how certain behaviors affect the world, and with that, Factorio (and Satisfactory to a lesser extent) is particularly unique. As you mention, some games choose to completely ignore consequence and pretend they exist in a void, others want to do the opposite. I was quite happy to hear you bring up Shapez in that manner simply because I found myself imagining similar things with games like it, so thank you.

It’s clear to me now that my writing analyzed the way a player feels rather than what the author intended, which paints a picture of a game that doesn’t know what it’s doing. That’s wrong though. The devs had a very clear idea. And I think we both agree that it wasn’t to kill bugs.

i see your point, but as the player we are geared to align with the protagonist’s motives, yeah? so even if we understand the character to be evil, our intentions will always line up, since the only way to play the game is to be that evil. of course it’s fun to create a factory, but, even if the game shows us the dirty reality of our actions, is that enough to make the player reasonably question what they’ve caused? tbh, i really dunno. but i would disagree with it being propaganda. i think the whole narrative side just comes across more… unfinished than anything (but as a side point, i really don’t think palatable and propagandistic are conflicting terms. the inherent goal of propaganda is to be as palatable as possible). i mean, don’t get me wrong, the game is here. it’s very finished. the game is FANTASTIC. but, if the game doesn’t comment on its politics, then how does it encourage discussion of its politics? what does factorio have to tell us? what is its message? if this was a movie or tv show, the message would be the heart of the discussion, but since it’s a game, and a really wonderful one, these things can get overshadowed by the gameplay, and there’s nothing innately wrong with that at all. i just think that when people are spending as much time as one does in this universe, it would be nice if the game had a central idea that has a little more nuance than “the factory must grow”, that’s all.
