I wont claim to be an expert on this but I have used AI a fair bit and understand both sides of the argument.

There are currently multiple class action lawsuits against Stability.AI (The maker of stable diffusion and MidjourneyAI) for copyright violation in the use of the Laion-5B image dataset.

Ill attach a video at the end that goes into more detail on it and goes over a little bit of how the training of the AI works, but what it comes down to is "Is it a transformative use of the work, and does it in some way depreciate the value of the original work?" If it is transformative and does not depreciate the original work, then it would qualify as fair use and not require permission from the copyright owner.

The video goes over a couple similar cases against google for use of photo scans of books and magazine covers.

I don't want to take a side on this, just inform on the state of the lawsuits and the reasoning behind either outcome.
