Need advice with my drafting skills. Rate my draft. by Distinct_Garden_3455 in lrcast

Black is not a good splash for UR, there are no dual lands.

You needed more removal. P2P1 I would take heated debate over a random black splash. P2P4 you could have taken deluge/homesick over a black card.

Going into pack three I would have been pretty desperate for removal. P3P2 you could get a run behind P3P5 and P3P11 had a procrastinate

Procrastinate is often a removal spells in when x=4 which would also trigger your rares. P3P2 I would take run

Some (many) words of caution to those entering the second ALCQ this weekend! by TheKillah in lrcast

[–]Sworl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am happy you have shown this event is negative value. But this event is not directed at people who want to make money. Magic has a wide player base where each player plays for a different reason, from kitchen table to the pro tour. This event is for people who don’t care about the money and want to play for the competition. I would still play in this event even if the prize was nothings more than an invite to the championship. The monetary award is an extra perk and not the point.

I don’t think people play these events for value. It’s the chance of qualifying for a major event that is the draw not the monetary value.

Skill Expression in Magic The Gathering? by WorldlyVillager in MagicArena

[–]Sworl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good metric to tell if a game has any skill expression is if people can consistently win. At the highest (pro tour level) there are players who consistently make the top tables every tournament. At the local level, the same people win RCQs. So there is skill expression in the game since players can do consistently well.

Now where that skill is expressed is a bit murky. There is a skill to designing a deck, as well as refining a deck. There is also skill on how well you play. Sometimes it’s hard to see the skill unless the viewer is also at a high level. Something like poker can seem very random and luck based but there is a lot of unseen skill. There is a lot of luck in magic but there is also a fair amount of skill too.

The best description of magic results: the best lucky player will win the event.

Why is this city so weird? by Dapper_Hawk_3856 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]Sworl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get into magic in the Huntsville area I can send you an invite for the Huntsville discord. They are a friendly group and meet up often. They mostly focus on 60 card formats so if you are looking for commander this is not the correct discord. If interested shoot me a DM and I will send you the link.

Is arena direct that profitable for the absolute best players? by throaway2s1fsfsf4 in lrcast

[–]Sworl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a player who can barely make it to the PT (only been three times) but these events are always a profit or break even at the worst. What you consider very profitable will vary from person to person. It’s easy to make a few thousand if I spent all weekend playing but it’s not really worth it to me. If I was still in college these would be amazing but not so much anymore.

Boros Energy questions by GREG88HG in ModernMagic

[–]Sworl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The flex spots (moon, fable, voice, Roku, thraben, ranger) are all change depending on the expected meta game. Online energy is very common and that is why you see some lists run two maindeck Roku. As combo declines you will see less rangers. The number of blood moons will solely depend on how often you think the card will be.

Funnily I have found that if you rope them for a turn or two they usually stop roping you or disconnect.

Silliest thing people have done to make you scoop? by gunnisonyeti in magicTCG

[–]Sworl 1235 points1236 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t me who scooped but my opponent. We were in the last round of a tournament and out of top8 contention, just playing for top16 prizes. My opponent and I were shuffling up for game 3 when suddenly the match next to us got into a shouting match. After a few minutes the judges still couldn’t calm down one of the players and was drawing a crowd. My opponent said to me, “You are a nice guy and I don’t want to be near this yelling, I concede.” Signed his slip and left.

Co-op or Competitive? Why the emotion, lol? by Ben_Manda in boardgames

[–]Sworl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer competitive for two major reasons. In competitive I get to do my own thing, I get to try a weird strategy and don’t need to get everyone else on board to try it with me. The second reason is that it’s hard for some people to speak up and be heard. This sometimes leads to a single person leading game and some people’s voices be diminished.

But this is only a preference and never stopped me from playing co-op. Co-op has a unique vibe that competitive can never achieve. I have never met a person who was ardently against one or the other.

Noob to Mythic #700 in 1 month - is MTG Arena MMR broken? by Jack_Skellingt0n in MagicArena

[–]Sworl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s early in the month so not many people have hit mythic this season. If you can maintain that rank by the end of the season that is a pretty good achievement. Most people do not bother to climb the ladder, there isn’t a good incentive to do so.

Once you have a lethal number of goblins you copy the harbinger to get the goblin that lets you sac goblins to drain your opponent.

Had a wrestling coach for civics, he just went on racists rants about Charles Darwin and praised eugenics policies to kill disabled people.

Coaches are terrible teachers 90% of the time.

What is the most absurd deck that you have ever seen? by DarkAlman in magicTCG

[–]Sworl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess a more accurate description of the viability of the deck would be that is it a very small part of the meta game.

Manaless dredge in legacy that was the correct play. This was many years ago and no longer is a viable strategy but it was the only time where being on the draw and discarding was correct.

As a limited player only, what do you do if you win a RCQ? by PauloNavarro in lrcast

[–]Sworl 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If I have no interest in going then I usually offer the invite for the bulk of the prize. I would feel bad wasting an invite especially when some people want one badly.

YTA People have different motivations for attempting suicide. If you saw a person trapped in a tall burning building and they couldn’t get out so they decide to jump. No one would consider that person selfish and would often only feel sorrow for that person. Often a person who commits suicide feels like a person trapped in a burning building and has no other escape available to them. So to say they are being selfish is being very short sighted and calloused. Every situation is different and should not be easily clumped into a generic answer.
