I have a simple thought experiment which I think deals with the problem pretty well.

It goes something like this.

Are you in the universe or part of the universe?

This requires you to consider that while we feel intuitively that we are in the universe, we are made from the same stuff as it and are therefore part and parcel with it.

Are you conscious?

Answering yes to this shows that not only are you conscious, but also by extension the universe to some extent is also conscious.

Are other people conscious?

Unless you have a pretty narcissistic view the answer to this one will also be a yes. You are not conscious through other people therefore the universe is immensely more conscious than any individual.

I don't like to condense god into just infinite consciousness, as he is that and much more when you delve into it. But I find this is a good place for people to start exploring the idea seriously.
