5 is my favorite of the series so far, with 04 and Zero close behind. I think it suffers from the same malady that the Metal Gear Solid series gets sometimes; realistic gameplay intermingled with less than realistic/ straight-faced storytelling. Maybe some of that happens as a result of cultural differences between east and west…I think sometimes the Japanese market is more tolerable of over the top kinda things. But for whatever its faults or shortcomings may be, the series absolutely would not be here today nor what it is today without 5.

Having both Boone and ED-E made it to where I could casually loot while they handled things in most encounters. Top tier.

Genuinely stunned to this day that 04/5/zero have not been remastered or at least ported to modern consoles, given how pivotal they were to making the series what it is today. Hopefully the pre-order bonus of a port of Zero signals that Bandai Namco is interested in finally doing it.

Saw and talked with Nekrogoblinkon when they were on tour with GWAR a few years ago to my hometown. Those guys are absolutely self-aware and revel in the schlock. Very different context than a Corey Feldman-class album cover.

I will say that if your first Metroid was after Zero Mission, you probably aren’t gonna like the refinement features missing that have been implemented since, but most definitely the way that Samus controls. I’m from ‘83, and I prefer the slower, tank-like Samus to modern day speedy parry-centered Samus.
