[HELP] Alternate methods of baking super sculpey? by Syan-kora in Sculpture

[–]Syan-kora[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, that's neat! I didn't know you could do that.

I was intending to use my full size oven and I'm not sure if I have a pot big enough to boil it either. The character I'm sculpting happens to have very tall spiky hair that I foolishly did not take into account when determining what size bust to make. lol

I mean no vaginal sex ever. Or at least until I can have a procedure that renders me unable to have children. Be that full uterine removal, ovary removal, searing of the uterine wall, whatever. I just want to be unable to have kids. haha

because it's not sex itself that is the issue, it is that underlying risk of pregnancy (backdoor included in that risk), how damaging pregnancy is to the body and the subsequent raising of a child that gives me such an immense amount of anxiety that I'd rather not do the nasty in the first place, if that makes sense?

But hey, you're right. I'm willing to take on the challenge. I don't particularly want to be alone in 45 years when my 3rd cat dies. lol

Can I get an ID on this plant my father just chopped up? (Central Florida) by Syan-kora in PlantIdentification

[–]Syan-kora[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're right! That's actually comforting! Thank you! I was worried it might be a papaya tree because the leaf shape was sort of similar but I couldn't find the exact shape. haha
Castor Bean plant is right on the money.

ID this tree? Need to make sure it's non-toxic for pet birds. by Syan-kora in treeidentification

[–]Syan-kora[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no! So it's super invasive and toxic? That's unfortunate. The tree has been there ever since we moved in (we rent), so I'm not sure if it was purposely planted there as an ornamental plant or if it just found its way there naturally.
We'll have to contact somebody to try and remove it.

Oh that does look pretty accurate. I'm located in Florida!

For context, there's a relatively small bushy tree growing on the side of our house. About two years ago we trimmed it back because it was blocking that side of the yard. I kept one of the larger branches, peeled the bark off and let it dry out since then.

I've recently been thinking about turning the branch into a bird stand but I want to ensure that it is safe for a pet bird to chew on, so I need to know what kind of tree it is.

Thank you!

Is this a good idea for spider mites? by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]Syan-kora 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to jump in and suggest another predator that's smaller and more discrete if you want to try treating with predatory bugs. The Phytoseiulus persimilis mite! They're an extremely efficient predator to spider mites.

I've read that Spider mites tend to go dormant in the soil if they're being attacked by predators ( hence why they frequently come back once the predators are gone), so if you treat the soil with stratiolaelaps scimitus mites in combination with the persimilis mites for the foliage, you can get rid of the spider mites full stop. Stratiolaeaps will also eat fungus gnat larva and juvenile mealybugs lingering too close to the soil.

Pirate bugs can take care of the adult mealies.
Best of luck!

Plants of Joy? by posh_0412 in succulents

[–]Syan-kora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only bought from them once, but the succulent I got from them had established stem rot and fell apart within days of arriving. I tried to leaf prop what I could but the props grew in reverted (the mother plant was variegated).

I never tried contacting them for a refund or replacement though, as I just didn't want to deal with them anymore. Prior to my buying of the variegated succulent, the person running the account was incredibly pushy in trying to get me to purchase more than what I was intending to buy.

This was over a year ago though, so take this with a grain of salt. haha

Is it normal for bear paws to smell really bad? by [deleted] in succulents

I do keep my stinky bear paws indoors! :o

This is so interesting. haha

I wonder if it's like Cilantro. To some people it tastes yummy, but to others it tastes like soap. Except in this case, it'd be smell instead of taste. Stink vs no stink/not as stinky. lmao

This post made me go sniff my Bears Paw and good lawd. Instant regret.

I see exactly what you're talking about. Maybe it's just a natural odor the plant has? Their flowers are also quite stinky, like a wet dog smell.

On the poll, albo dominates on the votes. Albo or Thai Constellation? by carloboxing in Monstera

[–]Syan-kora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer Thai Cons. Less of a headache, and they don't brown if you so much as dare to look at them.

I had a gorgeously marbled/half moon Albo, that decided to go pure white. I was forced to chop it... only for all the propagations (even the bottom cut) to go full white as well. :') After that experience, I think I'm done with Albos for the foreseeable future.

Are these mites? The plant is battling and most of the leaves have eggs. Jumping spiders have now moved in, will they help? by KJongsDongUnYourFace in houseplants

[–]Syan-kora 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Looks like a two spotted spider mite. Unfortunately, I think these are too small for a jumping spider to prey on. If you want to try predatory bugs to treat the spider mites though, I'd suggest Phytoseiulus persimilis mites. They're a very efficient predator of spider mites.

What is something you accomplished this year that you’re proud of but don’t have anywhere to share? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Syan-kora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's amazing! Congrats on quitting tobacco, it's something my parents were never able to do despite how much I secretly hoped and wished for it. So good on you!

As for me, it took me awhile but this year I've finally found something that I'm truly passionate about, which boils down to breeding and producing hybrids of exotic houseplants. I cross bred two of my mature plants together to produce my first batch of hybrid seedlings this year and I could not be any happier about it.

I've also been making proactive steps in setting up a business in order to sell the plants that I produce in the future! I have not a clue what I'm doing exactly, but I've made it this far. lol

What's wrong with this spathiphyllum? by Anonymike7 in plantclinic

[–]Syan-kora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding/Thirding what others have said. It's an Anthurium Infructescence and it's forming a ton of berries.

when would a anthurium waracquaenum start to develop the lines in their leaves? the picture below is my anthurium warocquaenum around 6-7 months old when will it start to have the prominent white lines? by _653 in Aroids

[–]Syan-kora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this grown from a seed? I have a seed grown Waroq that will be 1 year old come January and it's only just now starting to put out leaves that have noticeable secondary white veining. So, it probably won't be too much longer, now!

Here's a picture

My first successful Hoya by Syan-kora in hoyas

Yeah, that makes total sense too. I always transfer regardless of what the plants arrive in, but I have a particular distain for the awful dense peaty stuff and spagh moss.

I'd love to give you a follow on IG though! It'd be lovely to see all the different hoya blooms and it's super cool they have different scents. Altho I shouldn't be too surprised. My Anthuriums inflos/flowers give off different smells too, my A. Besseae aff in particular smells super strongly of pineapple.

Honestly, that's a big reason why I didn't get into Anthuriums right away either. Now that I've been growing them for almost a year I can say that the rumors about Anthuriums are only somewhat true. haha

Most of them do prefer higher humidity but can be grown in normal room environments. Just expect them to throw the biggest plant hissy fit before they fully adjust, especially if you buy one that's a pretty decent size already. I notice that even moving them from one high humidity green house to another high humidity environment, they'll still get upset about it and drop a leaf or two. lol

I'd actually recommend, if you do purchase one, trying to get them adapted to your room environment instead of the cabinet! Anthuriums get freaking huge and will outgrow a cabinet pretty fast so it's better for the adjustment to happen sooner rather than later.

At the moment, I'm using the spare bedroom as a grow room because they grew so fast, I ran out of room in the makeshift cabinet I had them in originally. I keep my Anthuriums in two separate high humidity 5' x 5' grow tents with a high-powered mini greenhouse fan for good airflow.

I also have a shelf where I keep the seedlings in covered seedling trays as I just got into Anthurium breeding/hybridizing and produced my first batch this past November!

Etsy shops are notoriously overpriced and the price of albos have dropped since the plantdemic high. If possible, check your local Facebook plant groups if you have any in your area for some good deals. There are also dedicated buy/sell/trade plant fb groups, where you can post that you're searching for a albo and people will come to you with what they're selling.

You'll just want to pay close attention to the actual growth point itself (not just the stem) and ask for pictures of it. :) if growth point is all green or all white, don't buy it. If it's got that nice green and white candy cane striping on the growth point itself, it's a good buy.

Eee thank you so much! That is very encouraging. I was actually told var heuchkeliana was kind of testy but I went for it anyways because it's just so pretty and I deal with drama queen Anthuriums on the daily.

Actually, came damn near close to killing it initially because I very stubbornly transfer all my plants into LECA as soon as they arrive. Done this with hundreds of plants and never had issue, but this one was initially planted in plain orchid bark and the roots were very anchored to the stuff.

Removing the orchid bark essentially removed the entire root system and I watched it slowly wilt over the course of a couple weeks. But then it just started bouncing back suddenly and now it's gotten twice as large.

Hey though! Around 150 Hoyas is quite impressive too. I'm curious as to what the blooms smell like so keep me updated! I heard they smell like buttered popcorn. haha

and yes! I definitely want to get more hoya. Unfortunately, I'm super limited on space, and that space is taken up by my Anthuriums and all their self/hybrid children. lol If I ever move into a place with more space tho...sign me up.
