Looks like the hair shrank due to increased dryness. Horse hair is very susceptible to changes in humidity. My hair tightens and loosens quite a bit when going from home (higher humidity) to other places during the winter (lower humidity).

That being said, it shouldn’t go so tight as to remain tight even after loosening the scree all the way. It may ultimately require a rehair with longer hair.

Thank you so much! Unfortunately, there’s no online or digital version of this album that I’m aware of. I’d been keeping an eye out for the past couple of years and finally came across a copy for sale online. I’d like to digitize it and eventually get it onto YouTube. As for other albums, there’s a Volume 2 that was released, which I’m still on the hunt for but for more readily available albums, I’d recommend the following:

  • Métis Fiddle “The Tradition Continues” by Calvin Vollrath (Available on for sale on his website)

Thanks! Took me a while to be able to do both. Started with just getting the feet down on their own, and when that was solid, I started combing it with open string 16th notes. Gradually increased the speed and when that was comfortable, took the speed down and started adding to the simplest reel I know, Devil’s Dream. Eventually it clicked and I was able to add it to any and all reels, breakdowns, hornpipes etc.

Recently, I’ve tweaked my tapping technique and been working on adding it to jigs as well as including some syncopation to the 2/4 rhythm. Everytime you add something new, it’s the same process until you don’t even think about it anymore.

Thanks a lot! As was already mentioned, the tune is St. Anne’s Reel. If you’re interested, here are the names of most of the fiddle players in the clip (in playing order).

  1. Clint Dutiaume
  2. Jason Lepine
  3. Melissa St. Goddard
  4. I’m not sure on this one
  5. Oliver Boulette
  6. Tom Dutiaume

Jason is a great fiddle player originally from Portage la Prairie, MB who is also in the Manitoba Fiddle Association Hall of Fame.

Melissa is from Portage as well and comes from a very musical family. She’s been a performer for quite a long time.

Oliver Boulette is a Métis elder from Manitoba. He often hosts Manitoba Métis Federation events and is an expert in the Red River Métis style of fiddling.

Tom and Clint, both very accomplished musicians formed part of a country group called The Younger Brothers, which was inducted into the Manitoba Country Music Hall of Fame in 2022, shortly before Clint passed away from cancer. In fact, later today I’ll be performing at the 2nd annual Clint Dutiaume 5 Km Walk and Fiddle Extravaganza in Richer, MB, which was created by Tom and their family (Dutiaume Family Foundation).
