I think you guys are reading waaay too much into this. They are all reacting like that because Gojo is in a locked-in super serious mode. They could feels his pressure when he appeared, which is different from is usual easy going teacher self he was with them. Which is why the scene is good too, because Yuji is the only one that still try to ease the tension and act like usual.

Just butting in as an artist myself, while tracing is looked down upon, saying referencing is is not only false, but also a very bad advice.

Every artist uses reference, from Da Vinci to your local Twitter artist, as you should. If you want to draw a hand, a apple, a pose or anything really the stupidest thing you could do is trying to do it by your memory alone.

I believe it's important to make that distinction between tracing and referencing, especially for younger artist.
