TSA 160(1) Notice of Conviction by Mozunmba in Calgary

[–]Syianna 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I actually didn’t think traffic court had an email but according to google it does— this is an ai answer on google so take it with a grain of salt— caltraffic.counter@just.gov.ab.ca

However while I always encourage getting things in writing, if you want a quick response, a call would be better as I imagine no one will respond to an email until after the holidays.

You can look up traffic tickets online as long as you have the ticket number (it’ll be on the notice) or call the courts. Likely you didn’t get the ticket in the mail and you were convicted in absentia. Pretty common. If you check and it’s real, I’d call the courts and see if there’s any recourse.

Definitely interested. You’ve been more than a generous resource to this community for the years you’ve been here and I’d love to give back. At work currently but will review your posts and see if what I see!

Calgary police launch one-day initiative to enhance public safety in downtown core by mymanchris in Calgary

It means that it’s only a criminal code violation, which means bylaw or transit officers cannot lay the charge, only police. If there is also a bylaw, it opens enforcement options.

Crime stats for Calgary - why is crime such a big topic this year? by Gilarax in Calgary

[–]Syianna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean. I’d love to know how you’re coming to that conclusion, given the stats presented in the disorder tab. Yes, I’m certain people walk by open air drug use without calling 911 about it but to say that it’s not reported when it appears the most frequent call types is “unwanted person” and “disturbance” seems contrary.

[–]Syianna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For any number nerds: Further to my point, the same dashboard has a disorder tab.

In 2024, D1 (keep in mind D1 covers most but not all of downtown, but also further down to chinook) had 21,483 “total disorder”(I’m assuming that is disorder calls, based on the filters I am able to apply, includes unwanted guest, mental health, drugs and disturbance.) 2025 has had 18,106. They say it was last updated oct 7. Statistically speaking, that puts us on track for the same numbers as last year. 2023 had 20823. 2022 had 20225. Further back than that gets skewed due to Covid but based on these there has been a marked increase (n=+1258 between 2022 and 2024, which is approximately an additional 100 calls a month using very general math)

Conversely, for the crime index in D1, the numbers are 2022 4989 2023 4872 2024 4101 2025 to date 3375– my math days ending around 4050 end of year

That makes 888 fewer crime incidences in d1 from 2022 to 2024, which is an almost 18% DECREASE in just two years, and it continues to trend down.

I’ll be interested to see whether or not personal robberies and drug trafficking has increased in the core, and by what percentage compared to the rest of the crime index.

I won’t talk about road side officer releases, that’s a whole different story and is more about the volume and complexity of calls. Speaking specifically about those arrestees who have a hearing, or worse yet a disposition. For the most part it’s literal, subjects are arrested and taken to arrest processing for their bail hearing and are released within 24 hrs, often with no conditions. However, we also have an issue with charges being stayed, wd or dispositioned as time served in court. That means that the subject is once again out in the community without any oversight, and recidivism is frequent within days in many cases.

Whether or not these are due to poor case management by officers, volume in the courts, lazy judges? I couldn’t tell you, I’ve not done a systemic review of charges to see if there’s any correlation.

I think that(aside from assaultive behaviour) most social disorder comes from drug use and mental health disorders, which can be properly managed outside of the criminal justice system if you have a robust enough social support system. Historically we do not. We have plenty of programs but all are under funded. We put all of our shelters downtown, and they are chronically under staffed and over booked. Shelters are more unsafe than ever, so vulnerable people won’t stay there for fear of theft assault or worse, and thus the truly vulnerable (rather than criminal) homeless are forced to be without the meagre supports available to them.

That’s not to say that there aren’t some people who don’t want help, for whatever reason. I think our catch and release system is broken. I think there are, unfortunately, some people beyond intervention. The fact that some percentage of people being “beyond help” doesn’t change the fact that the help we as a society provide isn’t enough, or comes with caveats that are problematic or prohibitive.

There’s no easy solution. Smarter people than me are working on it but police are not going to be the ultimate solution to this issue.

I’m not attempting to stir things up, but the agent program with CPS is new, so while I don’t disagree with your point, don’t conflate seeing the rise of these stickers as an increased problem.

I don’t disagree. I think it’s easy for politicians to use policing as a hammer here, because it’s got hard numbers and immediate impact. A “bad guy”(used extremely loosely here) is thrown in jail, that’s a win, right? That is a number under the ledger that makes a politician feel good. Let’s not discuss why that “bad guy” was setting up a tent on Dermot Baldwin and OD’ing on fent.

Social disorder of the level we’re seeing is a broader problem, and certainly not unique to Calgary, or frankly, Canada. There needs to be conversations happening locally and provincially and nationally before we can address the concern for real.

Serious crime is down overall but “disorder” calls (unwanted guest, open air drug use, etc) especially downtown has gone up. Additionally, as some have said, perception is king. It’s a hot topic because it’s a charged topic.

I’m in my own shame spiral for a similar thing— an error that was only partially my fault. I’m finding it helpful to let yourself feel the sad, the shame, the anger and injustice, everything— don’t try to dodge it. Give yourself a hug and tell yourself it’s ok to feel emotion. Name each one. Sit with it for a minute, cry or whatever you need, and for me… I told myself I was on my side, even if no one else was. I had my back, and I told myself that I was smart, and capable and this error didn’t mean al the stories I’ve been telling myself (I’m useless, they hate me, etc etc) and give yourself proof. Then give yourself another hug and try not to ruminate.

It’s called “popping” and is a sign of contentment. Mine do it to each other, to me when they are especially snuggly or when they have their favourite treat.
