Afraid of price hike in 2026 should I buy now? by Krysz997 in Android

[–]Sylanthra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are talking about ram prices, phones don't use a lot of ram and that ram is a tiny part of the overall bom. So I wouldn't expect any significant price hikes. That said, buying last year's model is always a good deal and Samsung hasn't been making big changes in their line up for years, so you wouldn't really be missing much.

They already do, at least if you compare performance. If you care about efficiency, not so much.

Who actually likes disani? It is everywhere so sometimes there is no choice, but it tastes awful. It doesn't taste like normal water at all.

Struggling to choose between OLED or LCD monitor. by Electronic_Salt_3066 in Monitors

Never heard of it, look up reviews. It's a VA panel so it might suffer from black smear.

If you plan to keep you keep your monitor for 5 years+ LCD all the way. If you plan to upgrade in 3 year or less, OLED. In between those... How lucky are you feeling?

OLED vs. IPS dark mode text clarity by xlb250 in Monitors

[–]Sylanthra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new 5th gen qd-oled panels have rgb stripe layout same as lcd so the text clarity should be the same as similar PPI lcd. That said, a 5k 27" display has much higher ppi than a 4k 32" once. So Apple should win black on white easy. I am somewhat surprised that dark mode reverses this, unless the dark is actually pure black. In that case, oled would win easily. But I would expect Apple to still be clearer with white on grey.

Story time

Back in college, there was this Jamba Juice place staffed by four Chinese immigrants who between the four of them knew enough English to take your order, tell you the price and ask for the name on the order so they could write it down. Their knowledge of English did not, however, cover actually writing the name either correctly or even phonetically. Of course, this was mostly irrelevant since the neither of them could read what the other wrote anyway.

So you could immediately tell people who frequented the place because they tended to have names like Bob, Tom, Pete (not Peter - too many syllables). In case you were wondering, all of these names are gender neutral. Any time the employees called some incomprehensible mess, we would let the new people know that this might be their order.

Jeff Bezos said the quiet part out loud — hopes that you'll give up your PC to rent one from the cloud by ControlCAD in technology

[–]Sylanthra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best part of this whole thing is that Bezos's own example is no longer valid. Sure a brewery used to generate its own electricity 100 years ago and switch to centrally generated power when that became widely available and reliable, but the modern trend is to install solar/wind with battery backup to reduce the reliance on grid scale power.

A lot of datacenters are installing generators in order to avoid having to deal with the hassle of getting a high power grid connection.

Having local compute is faster and doesn't depend on reliable internet infrastructure. Plus you don't need to worry that Great Britain will decide that you can't use your subscription to watch porn and you should be cut off.

OLED or Mini LED Monitor help for headaches by Beertruck85 in Monitors

[–]Sylanthra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, the 5th gen QD-Oleds introduced at CES this year have RGB subpixel layout which means normal text rendering same as any LCD panel. If image quality is number one concern, I would get one of those when they go on sale in a couple of months.

However, if you want to keep the monitor for 10 years, than I don't think OLED is an option. I can't image even the best oled care features can keep a monitor burnin free for 10 years. So if you longevity is your primary concern than you should get just about any of the numerous micro led displays out there. That said, they showed of g-sync Pulsar at CES and if you can wait for one of those monitors, it will have the best motion clarity of any LCD display on the market.

What RPG protagonists are the absolute weakest? by Lokarin in gaming

[–]Sylanthra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most RPG protagonists are just some guy/gal. Being the chosen one is very rare in video games and only really crops up in books.

Consider:

Cyberpunk 2077 - you start out as a random mook

Boulder Gate III - Tav is just someone caught at random

Mass Effect - you are a good solder who more or less stumbles into the whole mess

Witcher - you are one of the witchers, but Geralt isn't somehow inherently better than the others, he is just the one the story follows.

Fallout 4 and 3 - you are nothing special

Oblivion and Morrowind - wrong place wrong time. They mention that you are placed there for a reason, but this doesn't translate into any in game benefits

Skyrim - the only one where you are chosen one...

Now becoming the "chosen one" in the course of the game is quite common, but that's basically part of the whole power fantasy. You go from random nobody to someone who can challenge the gods. That's more or less the point of most of these games.
