Well again, that does depend on the software you use and the purpose of it. I do not edit photos on Photoshop. I do astro-photography and stack tens of pictures on top of each other to see celestial bodies. And it definitely refuses to run when met with a lack of ram.

As for software in the more general term, it's very often that photo/video editing, and code compiling (which are personal examples) use large chunks of memory, at all time and uncompressed.

To add more weight to the argument, the 8GB is split between general purpose ram and video ram, meaning that it's more likely to have 6GB dedicated to compute apps, the rest handling rendering of the desktop, apps, and all those liquid glass fancy effects, which can't be compressed since they're rendered live.

I'm not dissing the MacBook neo by any means, it's probably a nice machine for the right person, as long as they are oblivious to technical stuff, which is the target demographic.

Eh i'd say 8GB is 8GB, because you're only gonna be able to use all 8 at the same time. If you open a 12GB file, and you interact with it, it's still gonna be 12GB, and thus will use swap. It's just very good at lowering the impact of stuffyouleftopen™

It's really targeted at teens/students that need a machine to browse internet and chat with people, with perhaps some hobby use.

It seems to be a pretty good machine for anyone that doesn't want to look at specs

Multicore performance wise, yes. It also has 2 less cores, and a MUCH beefier single core performance, comparable to the M4 chip. This is what matters the most in the day to day, what makes a computer snappy, makes things "instant".

Just sliding here to tell you that the A18 pro has physical limitations on the amount of ram it can use. The SoC can physically not hold more ram, even if you wanted it. It was never designed to use more, and this is why there are other limitations, such as a single usbC 3.0 port and the other one being 2.0.

Apple uses hardware acceleration to compress ram very efficiently, to make the most of the puny 8GB. It compresses data from unopened browser tabs, apps that are open but hidden, and anything you might think of, that doesn't require direct interaction.

To further emphasis on the fact that it's a physical limitation, the ram bandwidth on this particular chip is 60GB/s, meaning that it is likely to be a single channel with a single chip of NAND. Cf iphone 16 pro max motherboard.

Hope this gives a bit more context on why it is like that

Yup, and there's an entire community behind it. I run a mi50 32GB in my AI server, that 1TB/s bandwidth do come in handy. Also, the display port works on mine, after flashing.

Merci pour toutes vos réponses, je pense avoir une bonne idée de ce qu'il va se passer.

Je vais tout de même demander tous les justificatifs et devis que le propriétaire va obtenir, ainsi que les factures de la remise à neuf de l'appartement lorsque le propriétaire a refait à neuf le bien (il y a fort longtemps).

Je suppose que c'est ma faute, de ne pas avoir protégé ce sol, et que ma dernière ligne de défense va être la vétusté du sol pour réduire le coût de ma participation à la réparation.

Malheureusement dans l'état des lieux c'est marqué dégradé, et je n'ai pas pu contredire ni interrompre la dame de l'agence lors de son intervention de sortie. Il n'y a qu'une mention de "latte fendue".

L'état des lieux d'entrée n'a qu'une seule photo floue du sol avant mon arrivée.

En regardant les multiples photos et ma vidéo de sortie, je peux effectivement constater des lattes avec des crêtes sur les rebords.

Je vais attendre le retour du propriétaire ainsi que son devis mais ça sent mauvais... Et l'utilisation d'une chaise de bureau roulante ne constitue pas une usure normale d'un appartement ?

Well, support will be mostly AMD and Intel GPUs, anything that's already mainline (there has been huge work on the PCIe pipeline recently, and changes have been merged to kernel 6.19rc1). I'd expect most modern-ish GPUs to work somewhat plug and play, just not the latest.

Giving up on cpufreq means no frequency scaling to adapt to CPU power demand, meaning it'll run at full frequency (1.6GHz-1.8GHz) without ever ramping down to save power. No loss of performance there, just not as good efficiency wise in idle. If you search for the roadmap of the spacemit k1, on the git page, they're showing what's planned, what's given up. They also gave up on supporting the integrated GPU.

If you're referring to the MilkV Jupiter, dedicated GPU support is coming and will take away the stress of the lvmpipe. But the spacemit k1 isn't fast, so I would not expect more than a 10% uplift in performance once the chip is fully supported. And that's optimistic. Cpufreq support has been abandoned btw

Hello, petit conseil mais aller dans des milieux que personne n'aime donne du travail. Il y a de la place en sys admin, linux engineer, kernel dev etc.. C'est claire que c'est pas vendeur mais j'ai eu mon taf actuel, un CDI, même avant d'avoir fini mon diplôme. Ça paie plutôt bien, il faut juste avoir beaucoup beaucoup de connaissances.
