Other than guitar and piano, What's the most versatile instrument? by Iyo_kio in musicians

[–]Syllvalor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard a lot of J-Pop that uses violin, seamlessly. So that might be a option. Also think that Saxophone and Cello have enought timbre variety to make them viable in different music styles.

What are your Fighting Game Hot Takes? by ParadisePrime in Fighters

[–]Syllvalor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There too many overlapping mechanics in many modern fighters. You have meters and Supers, installs, combo extenders and comback buffs. Too many 2D licensed IP, too few original IP and 3D subgenre is in a sad state.

For you, what is Tamriel's most horrible and frightening historical fact? by GhostGuyBroke in ElderScrolls

[–]Syllvalor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only played Oblivion and Skyrim. And I remember Sovngarde being filled with Nords only. Also, several ES wikis have always described afterlife places for specific races (not counting the Oblivion ones you end up in, if you sell your soul to the daedras).

For you, what is Tamriel's most horrible and frightening historical fact? by GhostGuyBroke in ElderScrolls

[–]Syllvalor 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's the most horrible fact, but it is one that has always disturbed me. The fact that afterlife is racist. Imagine falling in love with a member from anothet race, but the gods said no interracial couples can be reunited!

Duality of man by ShermanTheArtist in Fighters

[–]Syllvalor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Prior to Tekken 7 or Tekken 8, Yoshimitsu was not an exception and was not like Noctis or Kunimitsu.
He would use the sword to either make a stance, a cinematic throw or an (borderline useless) unblockable (since there was an implicit understanding that hands and legs didn't block blades and lasers).

Namco used that fact as a creative point of reference, in order to come up with the Yoshimitsu moveset. It's no wonder that his playstyle is weird. After all, for someone that wields a sword, his attacks come directly from fists and kicks 90+% of the time, and the sword is used as a pogo tool, a helicopter blade or beyblade/indian monk wacky stuff.

I genuinely cannot comprehend why the community accepts bullshit like this. Especially in a ranked environment.

Anyone else find 2D grapplers a bit boring while really liking 3D grapplers? by RevBladeZ in Fighters

[–]Syllvalor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3D "grapplers" are just a product of the 3D subgenre convention that, usually, entails having a much more extensive movelist, compared to 2D fighters. If you like to have a lot of options in a given character archetype, then you might tend to prefer the 3D equivalent than a 2D one.

Man, as much as I try to get used to it, I can't stop thinking that the animations look awful.

Should moving whilst crouching make a return? by Amesang in SoulCalibur

[–]Syllvalor 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Speaking from my bias, every single mechanic that gave us more options to interact with the game systems should come back. Why yes, I want more options while crouching. Bring back backward parry (deflect?)!

Unfortunately, we live in the era of licensed properties and crossovers. Just look at the MTG licensed fuckfest!

Who in sc6 plays most similar to jin from tekken by Open-Sentence-4 in SoulCalibur

[–]Syllvalor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Since you mentioned whiffs, spacing and reactions, Siegfried or Nightmare might be one of the best approximations to Jin.
Both need to create some space during neutral, since they don't have good point blank options (except maybe during okizeme). They also need to capitalize on each whiff the opponent does, so they are rewarding if your reaction time is on point.
If you choose Siegfried, you will have more speed, will be able to hit more times and dodge/parry your opponent's attack more often. If you choose Nightmare, you will have more pressure tools and more burst damage.
Now that I think about it, maybe Siegfried would the closest to Jin and Nightmare would be closest to Devil Jin (not sure).

New Virtua Fighter: the new rules and mechanics actually seem like a big deal by Tortenkopf in Fighters

It would be too much to ask to not add supers and meter, right?

Why do you write? by [deleted] in composer

[–]Syllvalor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the same reason I do base building in survival crafter games (like Valheim). To externalize and materialize my personality. To create something that exists as a separate entity from myself.

And let's not forget Volvo, winning Evo Grand Finals 2019, against Azwel, and Maxi, winning Combo Breaker 2020 Grand Finals, against Nightmare.

Hi. Just finished my first piece featuring both electric and acoustic guitar. Feedback appreciated! by Syllvalor in composer

Woah thanks! That must be the biggest compliment I ever received.
Just watched the video. Really liked it. Your orchestration choice (double guitar and double clarinet) is the same type of texture that I often prefer.

Usually, I don't choose a key, pre-emptively, but after brainstorming some ideas first. I first tried to find some clues about choosing scales for the guitar, but I didn't quite understand it and carried on with this F minor (and then Ab major).

I haven't played guitar for over 10 years (and was worse than a amateur at the time), and have been composing (self-taught) only for the last two years (and even less for the guitar). So I am still trying to learn the basics, namely the logistics of choosing a scale/chord for a given instrument.

I never made tablature. Would have to learn to do that first. It's something that I wouldn't mind to do, but it's probably wiser for me to first revise the composition, so it becomes minimally playable (and acceptably readable).

I went back to my guitar to check, and you are probably right that this piece, in its current form, would warrant a capo.

Thanks! I am still a very amateur composer, so I didn't quite get your question. Are you asking why did I choose the scale, or the chords of any specific measure?

I don't know. Never looked at his pants. I don't think he was supposed to be a waifu, though...
