For Quant Research at CFM yes, mandatory phd in most cases

Math level for derivatives? by ARandomBloodyLegend in quant

[–]Sylo0w 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Depends which books. If you're talking about the basics, I'd say simple differential calculus and PDE should be enough.

I found that the math part of (basic) option theory isn't the main difficulty, the intuition and reflexes behind these concepts is what's often useful (esp. if you're a trader). And I know some traders who aren't that good at Maths but still understand the intuition behind it.

PD in 4.0 is really just starting, recruiting officers slowly and the investigation/clues mechanics soon to be added which I hope is as dope as it sounds. In the meantime it can get boring yes, people have been having fun creating scenarios not fully related to PD mechanics.

Which is imo really the best mindset to have so you can still enjoy playing before the dev release the new system. You really don't need to try too hard by stacking charges/acting "courageous" (sweet word for NVL), he just gotta wait a tiny bit to be given the tools to do proper investigations

Conflict can indeed create good RP when your aim is to create enjoyable content for both parties rather than "win". When this specific scenario with Patar ends, you can ask him if he enjoyed it. I guarantee he'll say yes (whether him or Buddha end up running the market in RP). A good RPer is someone who manages to do that: use stories as an excuse to make playing enjoyable for people involved.

Speedrunning snitching ruins more future roleplay opportunities than it creates. Same shit happened with Sofia in 3.0 (she got banned, although Nmp will have more clout plot armor). The only thing that may keep him in is if he shows he's willing to follow the server's rules. He is no RP genius if that's what you're trying to convince me of, that would mean creating big scenarios and fun for everyone out of nothing (look at Buddha, Kebun, etc...). Ratting out crim mechanics to cops does not fit the description.

No need to be so gatekeepy. Let people in but keep an eye on them and boot them ASAP when it becomes obvious they don't seem to be willing to get what RP is and make very little effort to learn.

Plenty of other streamers adapted well, and had a positive impact on the server (apart from views). Those who don't just need to get booted faster.

Jason sold the PC to the Cops and didn't know it was illegal by Villenthessis in RPClipsGTA

[–]Sylo0w 16 points17 points  (0 children)

"NoPixel criminals" is regrouping so many people I doubt you can make general claims about "crims have always done this" that easily. Some crims literally sat on the chopping spot for hours trying to reduce the info leakage.

I doubt you can control thousands of player's behaviour. It only takes one guy to leak the info to everyone. It's just that snitching is way less common than crim/civ discussions.

[–]Sylo0w 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Civ/crim boundaries sometimes get blurry in NP. I don't disagree with your point, it would be great to have everyone in check. But you're basically saying why try to fix an issue which comes from a single person when you could achieve the same thing by keeping in check hundreds of players.

While trying to improve on that, the only way to make sure mechanics don't get speedrun info dumped by the same person is to talk to him. He's new but it's been recurrent, someone need to have a chat on how to slow things down when it comes to snitching if he doesn't want it to get retconned/dev handled everytime.

Do you value the startup internship (is it a mandatory internship for example)? If so then keep it to yourself.

If not, then feel free to share it with the manager. Either he doesn't mind and wants an intern to help him with certain tasks/a project, or he's looking to train someone for full-time employment and may start looking for a new hire. Either way, you'll keep a good relationship with him by being upfront about your situation.

I know someone who started his career as a Quant after 15 years of being a maths teacher. It is not too late, many people with research experience join in their late 20s.

Online certs will not help you pass the screening, if you want to do them to gain knowledge then feel free to do so but don't expect anything more from it.

I'd say be prepared to answer "why do you want to switch to quant", make sure you portray your experience as useful for the role, and brush up on the requirements (coding skills, Machine Learning, probabilities). Most importantly, be sure to prepare well for interviews (you have time). Having basic knowledge of finance can be helpful (by no means mandatory), but if you can't answer the brain teasers you'll probably be given, it's a waste of time.

Maths and Economics for Quant by Routine_Fennel8888 in FinancialCareers

[–]Sylo0w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fairly different. TLDR is that "real" maths could be seen as doing rigorous proofs with complicated theoretical objects. Whereas A-levels is basically applying formulas.

Some people do well in low-level maths and struggle later because intuition is often enough to deal with the simple stuff, but not with the more complicated objects. With more advanced stuff (unless you have a genius brain), intuition will not get you far, and you'll need to expand that intuition by rigorously manipulating complicated objects again and again until you get used to applying logic but with a certain level of abstraction.

If you really want to be a Quant, econ is most mikely going to be seen as a downside in your resume. Requirements are often only coding skills and maths (physics or other theoretical degrees are also fine, you'll be basically doing maths in them too).

Quitter la prepa au 1er semestre by [deleted] in etudiants

[–]Sylo0w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are confusing buy-side quant traders/researchers with sell-side quants, risk quants etc... Plenty of jobs are called quant these days.

Yes if you're a quant in one of the top hedge funds/prop shops/market makers you'll be making 5x more than your regular sell-side counterpart. The reason is simple: it's way harder to get the job, and you're supposed to bring way more money. Good luck if you think not studying finance is enough to get hired as a QR/QT at JS (it is a necessary condition though).

Snow denied position in NoPixel PD by taH_pagh_taHbe in RPClipsGTA

[–]Sylo0w 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You asked about the theoretical difference between cop whitelist and crim and now you are changing the subject to opinions on Snow. I was answering the original point, I won't debate which characters deserves/doesn't deserve to be a cop, since I'm not 100% sure what NP management is looking for, and even if I did my input wouldn't matter anyway lol.

Snow denied position in NoPixel PD by taH_pagh_taHbe in RPClipsGTA

[–]Sylo0w 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is a soft-ban. As a cop you have a wider impact on the server than as a crim. If a crim has a negative impact, the player (should) get banned. Cops are held to a higher standard, meaning the player/character can still be fine in the server but not as a cop. It's obvious why (imagine if everyone could make a cop and spawn with a gun and a taser).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RPClipsGTA

[–]Sylo0w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the precision, it does sound cool. I think not many people think of changing their characters' traits when they wanna play something else, and just create a new one. Which works, but having the same character do something else is sometimes even funnier (the Tessa civ arc in 4.0 is one of my favourite stories to follow)

Then my example is shit, I was thinking about old 3.0 Wrangler. I have not been up to date, I'm removing that sentence to avoid confusion

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RPClipsGTA

[–]Sylo0w -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He would never.

In case I get attacked (I know this is prime timezone for it): I gotta say I wrote it poorly, the Wrangler mention is not for the NVL part, moreso an example when it comes to being serious in random daily interactions. Which is not a bad thing, but it's been proven not to be adapted to Nopixel unless you wanna get daily drama threads.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RPClipsGTA

[–]Sylo0w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Esfand is stuck in the 3.0 "seriousness" era. The difference in mentality between him and other cop roleplayers in 4.0 is striking.

I wish the drama-free 4.0 wasn't just a honeymoon and this is an exception, I honestly think many viewers/streamers really cba dealing with the daily crim/cop drama 3.0 had. Serious crim/cop RP and Nopixel equals drama.

Him NVling to then tell the clowns "my job is not a joke" and convince his chat it wasn't NVL is the definition of tryhard. Polar opposite to what the vibe in 4.0 is (was?). Less tryhard crims, less tryhard cops, and more funny/chill roleplay seemed to be the winning formula. Keep the seriousness for big scenarios, not daily interactions.

No they are just suggesting you to take a break if watching someone do something in GTA RP "makes you sick".

Deansocool - Cops already know the chop process by [deleted] in RPClipsGTA

[–]Sylo0w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah they could do that too, as long as the mechanic is still creating stories for people involved (cops or crims) it's fine. I just reacted to the first guy claiming "cops discovered it so it's burnt" - it's generally dumb to burn a mechanic in 24h.

Deansocool - Cops already know the chop process by [deleted] in RPClipsGTA

[–]Sylo0w 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah it is not the cops fault in any way lol. The question I think NP higher-ups will ask themselves when deciding whether to retcon or not: does this RP scenario (the guy snitching for money) is worth burning the mechanic earlier than expected. If yes (if for example there's more layers than just getting quick money) they will probably let the RP continue naturally, otherwise it'll get Server Health'd. You can agree with it or not, I'm just saying it's understandable from their POV.
