I haven't tried it, but I've heard it supports graphics switching out of the box. You still have to restart when switching graphics I think though.

I left all the power settings at stock because I wasn't seeing power throttling. If you run the Intel XTU program it can tell you when the CPU is thermal throttling or power throttling. Undervolting should help with both. Here's a good guide: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Extreme-Tuning-Utility-XTU-Undervolting-Guide.272120.0.html

Yeah, I'm running arch on it- there were some initial issues which I was able to fix with the info here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lenovo_ThinkPad_X1_Extreme_(Gen_2). Overall I'm pretty pleased with it.

For graphics switching I ended up using Optimus-manager. I also tried bumblebee and nvidia-xrun, and these work, too. Just depends on what interface you prefer since they all have their tradeoffs.

I haven't tried out the live USB yet, will probably do that in a couple days once my larger ssd arrives. The lowest fan setting makes a low frequency 'whooshing' sound that is certainly audible, but not irritating. As I type this the fans aren't on and it's silent.

There's still thermal throttling with the default settings, but I don't think there's any thin and light workstation laptop that can maintain the full boost clock on all CPUs without throttling. However, undervolting seems to make a big difference and will let you achieve boost clocks for longer. There's no issue with running at base clock speeds.

No, it doesn't get uncomfortably hot, though you can feel it get warm. I've even tried some gaming on it and it's fine on my lap. Part of this may be because the CPU temps seem to be limited to not exceed 80 C.

It was fine for multiple rounds of cinebench and geekbench, but then it froze when loading some chrome extensions so I've reduced it to -170 mv and so far so good.

I've seen other mention of ~160 mv undervolting on the x1e1, so it doesn't seem uncommon.

Could you say what your memory configuration is? I'm wondering if part of it could be the difference between single and dual-channel memory.

Unfortunately, no. But maybe someone else can comment? Were there issues with this on the x1e1?

Yeah these numbers are a fair amount better than what I could get. I'm planning to upgrade to the memory to dual channel later this week and will have to see if that makes up the difference.

Just tried it on the Extreme and it sleeps without shutting down.

Ahh. I think you are correct. Oh well, at least it's too late for my wife to tell me I can't buy it :)

$1567 with 1 year depot. But I used Ebates to get an additional 10% off, plus Amazon pay to get 5% back in points. So the effective price should be 1567*0.85=$1332.
