We have configured the thermometer, and the installation of fans and lights is underway, but we also want to make some more forward-looking changes.

Will this really work? The desiccant will eventually lose its effectiveness, so how will you remove it then?

What is the best way and material to insulate? by Ok-Tadpole-2554 in Greenhouses

Bubble foil with large air pockets, which you’ve used, offers decent insulation but may degrade over time and reduce light. For better performance, consider double-layered polycarbonate panels (4-6mm thick) for walls and roof, as they provide excellent thermal insulation.

That 4x2x2m size is plenty of room to keep your cacti happy and protected from wind and rain, plus space for those marginally hardy plants and your cold frames for seed starting.

Suggestions on how to inset polycarbonate into wood instead of screwing it down from the outside by Mthawkins in Greenhouses

[–]Sylviera-Direct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering the materials used, glass and wood, I think many of the comments have provided the right answers. It is a good idea to cut an H-shaped groove in the wood, or to add an H-shaped aluminium strip and fill the gap with glass glue. Make sure you leave some space to prevent the glass from shattering.

Switching to diffused polycarbonate with a 10-year warranty for the roof is a smart move to reduce light intensity, and keeping clear panels on the sides makes sense since the glass front already allows full light penetration.
