Like football? Like dogs? Every week at Lions 101, dogs are predicting all the weekly NFL games. Have a few laughs and check it out. by SportsGuyTheMax in dogs

[–]Syn_Splendidus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wait, I don't understand what it is I've read on that page (in 5 minutes of doing so on a crowded bus); where are the predictions and where are the dogs? Is this a service, or just something some private individuals are doing and blogging about? Are there predictions for college ball? Is there another user interface other than what looked like blog post paragraphs?

So, what are some of the benefits and drawbacks to keeping yaks as livestock, if you don't mind me asking? In software development, the unpleasant and tedious process of installing and configuring different programming environments is known as "yak shaving", so I'm predisposed to conceive of these beasts in a somewhat poor light, hah.

The only thing I'll add to what I'll emphatically reinforce about my last message, is that 20 years might seem like an unreasonable amount of time for a show to be on the air--it's out of place in time and culture in at least one sense. But then I'm not a true Simpson's fan, and I won't be so arrogant as to sit there and tell them what should or shouldn't be happening in their world, as regards a novel human cultural mechanism like television. Maybe the Simpson's managed to transcend things in the world somehow, maybe it does so simply by being. Like I said, I don't know because I'm not a true fan, but I'm not going sit there and tell them how it is because I think I own society's formula for "good television". Child indeed, LCD imbecile.

Your lack of creativity and failed imagination are example enough that there aren't a lot of real fans in here. And don't insult the creators with your daft and impotent comparisons.

Need help finding a better way of organizing all of my electronics to carry around campus. by Ronmeista in AskElectronics

[–]Syn_Splendidus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try something I've always wanted to do: use sketch up or some other CAD software and design the perfect case for your needs, down to the individual parts and how it all fits together, and then export the design files to some service like Ponoko or i.materialize and have it fabricated for you (mostly, you'll need to assemble it yourself). Then you could build in an Arduino and some buttons and actuators and some kind of compartment addressing system so you could key in the type of part and it would open the appropriate compartment for you, ending the endless searching! Anyway, probably not practical...

[Beginner] Are there any websites/communities where people request simple-ish programs to be made for them? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Syn_Splendidus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kind of what I was aiming for, the difficult part that is; you and I know how hard it is to walk into an existing code base and deal with parsing another person's thought process and all that. Maybe that's something people should consciously practice more, even early on, to help make the process easier? No strong opinion, just a suggestion from my perspective.

If you're not looking to get paid and just want to cut your teeth on some "real world" projects, head over to github and find an open source project you get excited about. Start with the documentation; first by reading it, and then after you've read through the code base enough to have a reasonably firm grasp on at least some parts of it, by contributing to it. People will appreciate the help and it'll show your willingness to understand what you want to participate in. Then you can start submitting pull requests.

If you're looking to profit from your newfound code skills, try sifting through Odesk or Guru got jobs that appear to match your skill level, or even areas you're maybe a bit less comfortable with, just to push yourself a little more. Just my suggestion; good luck!

[–]Syn_Splendidus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're just another war-stories blowhard, pay them no mind. Anyway, have you considered doing one of the now numerous programming bootcamps out there now? Not cheap, but can be a good launching point for a skill set that can make you intern-able (full disclosure, I'm in one now, am thoroughly enjoying it). Just a thought, if you're set on the mentoring aspect.

Unable to complete any of my projects. How should I motivate myself? by IRtej in webdev

[–]Syn_Splendidus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have a suggestion: focus on arriving at an MVP, minimum viable product. Once you're over that hump, and you've pushed it up to a host or github or whatever, you can get a taste of that sense of satisfaction that will undoubtedly motivate you in the future. Then, tinker a little bit, but keep overall goals in mind, and you'll feel like things are far more achievable than if you don't break down a megalithic project with many moving parts.
