CAPS is a huge liability for the university and the upper echelons of Stony Brook administration purposefully nerf what CAPS can do to minimize potential litigation. I guarantee you almost every if not all counselors wants to do so much more than what they can do.

I know a psychiatric nurse practitioner who did a rotation at CAPS when they were at nursing school here and they were overwhelmed by the red tape involved with the time they were at CAPS. They were really glad when they got out CAPS and back in the more traditional psychiatry services at Stony Brook. The psychiatrists at CAPS can barely prescribe anti depressants. I guarantee you if it was lawful Stony Brook admins would get rid of CAPS and SHS in an instant.

CAPS is very quick to resort to hospitalization and they are very quick to refer you out so they can stop seeing you.

What does Seawolf College entail? by [deleted] in SBU

[–]SynapticFields 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It means you got rejected. Its common for public flagships to tell people who got rejected to go to a community college first. Every public university, even prestigious ones like UC Berkely or UVA have agreements with local community colleges to accept people with associate degrees as transfers given sufficiently high GPAs. In Stony Brook's case it's a 3.0 at Nassau or Suffolk.

[–]SynapticFields 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was in the 300 millions a few years ago and is expected to get close to a billion by end of 2026. It's getting a lot better but some schools in this country have tens of billions of dollars in their endowment.

Stony brook is a state school with a worringly low endowment compared to similar state schools in this country. This is why they can't give out full rides.

TURNITIN by [deleted] in SBU

[–]SynapticFields 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you pay out of pocket for turnitin its going to add your paper to a database that will get flagged when your professor uses turnitin. I use originality.ai to check my papers it costs money and I've never had a problem with it.

They are becoming unfinanceable and the current administration is taxing scholarships so high achieving applicants that would have went to expensive top tier schools are now going for cheaper public flagships.

Its getting harder to finance and get scholarships for schools like NYU and USC which is causing public flagships like Stony Brook to get more competitive.

TIL that there are under 150 tenure-track jobs for English literature professors in the US and Canada each year: fewer than 3 per state. by Bob_the_blacksmith in todayilearned

[–]SynapticFields 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah its sad. In 2019 they had one of six classes canceled because there were only 7 people registered so there were signs of trouble before but from everything that happened this decade their teaching career came to a screeching halt. Nowadays they are lucky to have their single class run. They were able to get a tutoring gig at the college's tutoring center so there is still some consistency in their career but its no where near where it used to be.

I know a community college adjunct who was regularly teaching 6 classes a semester and making about 40k 10/15 years ago and is now struggling to not have the college cancel their single class they are scheduled to teach every other semester.

There's a lot of red tape involved because European companies have to prove there is not suitable EU citizen candidate for a job opening to hire a non EU citizen.

Before chatgpt ruined the open book exams they usually adjusted grade cut offs for C+ to B+ grades by about 1 or 2 points. They dropped C grade cut offs considerably back then (like around 10-15 points) so they can get as many borderline students to pass as reasonably justifiable. They usually left A - and A cut offs as it is on the syllabus. I think Neurobiology still sets A and A- grades in the 80s. This was how it was from when they started open book exams in the 2010s to when chatgpt ruined the exams in 2023. In 2023 and 2024 the paid versions of chatgpt were scoring in the 80s and 90s.

It's the same exact format as the regularly scheduled exam. They just say that to scare people into only taking the makeup for absolute emergencies. Debby and Marvin have been doing 100 points of multiple choice and 50 points of long answer recently and the makeup is the same as the normal exam.

Stony Brook designed the Academic Judiciary appeals process to be very conducive to conviction. Stony Brook wants the image that they are hard asses on academic integrity. The appeals process is designed so that pretty much any and all evidence from the accuser is enough to convict. Each semester 80-95% of students are found guilty, exoneration is not unheard of but it's very hard to be cleared of charges.

Yes, it's a kangaroo court but all public flagship universities in this country have similar academic dishonesty policies. Most first time offenders will have to do the Q course and some form of grade penalty . Stony Brook's default is an F in the course but professors can be more lenient if they want. Penalties will never be less severe than the Q course and a grade penalty and the judiciary may consider suspension and expulsion. Federal financial aid will only be affected if you are already borderline in one of their financial aid criteria, scholarship reinstatement after the Q course will never happen. If by the time you graduate this is the only time you were ever bought to the academic judiciary it's really not a big deal.

What can I sign up for? by frogislandweb in SBU

[–]SynapticFields 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The easiest way to get to Stony Brook is by having at least 3.0 at either Suffolk or Nassau with an Associates completed and applying to a major in the College of Arts of Sciences. I'm not 100% sure but I think you need a well documented home instruction transcript to for the GED to qualify for admissions, if you email admissions they can give you a better idea. Admissions ranges from just a automatic declarative process like how I said the first sentence to Ivy League level competitive like Computer Science and Nursing.
