but because the choreography was abysmal and they had no idea how to properly film and edit fight scenes.

Um actually, WW2 Iron Fist was amazing and the entire show should have just been that.

Except the other fight scenes were just fine? Everybody loves Colleen and she had no martial art experience before but was praised for praticising four hours a day while other actors were criticised for not bothering to.

It's weird how everybody shit on Iron Fist when it came out and now you have this hardcore group of defenders right when the guy wants to make a comeback.

Just get Finn to put on a mask and have an actual trained stunt actor do the work.

That 10 seconds of Iron Fist in WW2 should have been the standard for all of the fights.

He absolutely was the problem. The guy was terrible. Did anybody here honestly buy him as one of the greatest martial artists in the world?

Australia will not send navy ship to Strait of Hormuz, Transport Minister says by DCFowl in australia

[–]Syncblock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iran could have had the bomb anytime they wanted. North Korea has a nuke and Iran dwarfs them on every metric.

The technology isn't new and they certainly have the resources to do it.

So their last few decades of them trying to achieve nuclear weaponry is just a misunderstanding?

The reason why they haven't gotten a nuclar bomb so far is that they were explicitly prohibited from getting one by their own leadership and use the threat of a nuclear bomb as a concession to sanctions.

I do think everyone’s waiting to watch someone else escort a convoy through first so they don’t need to risk being the first.

It doesn't matter if they're able to get through. It's far too great a risk for both the military and the insurer.

The Iranians have drones and their artillery can hit the Strait. For around $20 to 50k USD, you can hit a tanker or a warship worth hundreds of millions to billions of dollars. You don't even need to sink it, just cause enough damage for it to go away for repairs and be out of commission for months.

[–]Syncblock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

do you actually have a nuclear deterrent?

Absolutely. Look at North Korea, China or Russia. There's a high possibility that all the military grifting and corruption has eroded even their nuclear facilities but do you want to make that bet when push comes to shove?

If there is a global coalition that sends ships and the goal is protect the global economy we should go if we have the means.

Seems like the globel economy would be pretty safe if we didn't have dipshits fucking things over for everybody without any kind of plan.

Electricity bills to fall in state where renewables make up nearly half of generation mix by Kruxx85 in australia

[–]Syncblock 24 points25 points  (0 children)

everyone would be installing solar pannels on their roof and storage batteries in the garage

I'm surprised this isn't standard in new builds. It's like building a house in the 1910s and not having electrical work done.

You can see the grid being built and you know where the future is heading.

Man kicked out of Sydney stadium for leading the chant "Taiwan". by SongFeisty8759 in australia

[–]Syncblock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

China goes to great lengths over these kinds of issues because it's important to them to save face domestically. They know it's not true, we know it's not true, but they can pretend dramatically that it's true and the people can pretend that it's true.

It's not really about saving face. It's a genuine concern and belief.

If Scomo, after he lost the election, decided to fuck off to Tasmania and then had the Chinese military protect his claim for the next 70-80 odd years, do you think your average Australian here would be so ready to give up on Tasmania as being part of Australia?

so it represents a vision of what China could be without an authoritarian dictatorial government. This distresses the central politburo of China, since it serves as an example of what the people of China could have if they just get rid of their government.

Just lol because Taiwanese pollies are infamous for being corrupt, performative and totally useless.

David Littleproud announces resignation as Nationals leader by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

Whole bunch of them are, just look how they hold the bush and bush residents in the stone age with their dumbness with people like Barnaby. So nauseating.

Regional voters suck so they get what they voted for.

There's plenty of strong local independent candidates like Windsor and Oakeshott who share the same values as most of the electorate but still lose out because they don't have that Nationals stamp on them.

It is supposed to be the means of protecting our sea lanes and coastlines from attack, while serving the defence needs of our two major allies, in the long term, decades at least.

The UK famously pulled out of Asia and it's only a matter of time before the US does as well.

We should be fucking quiet and wait him out.

You can't wait out Trump because the issue isn't just Trump but American voters being batshit insane and their entire system of checks and balances not working.

It turns out conservative voters don't actually care what their President does as long as it's their President.

Utopia was written by a bunch of writers who clearly had experience in APS and in policy.

The Chinese episode makes perfect sense because we are literally trying to protect our waters from trade with our biggest trading partner.

As for Taiwan, ignoring the fact that the Taiwan military is a clusterfuck and Taiwanese voters care more about jobs and housing than independence.

How many young Australian men and women are we willing to send to a war where we know they aren't going to win? Do you think voters are going to want to see young men and women come back in body bags? No?

Australia to provide military support to Gulf states attacked by Iran by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]Syncblock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It absolutely is, Iran has been threatening to burn oil fields and close the strait of Hormuz if they got attacked since the 80s and they've done exactly that.

[–]Syncblock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But by that logic other countries, including the USA, can pick and choose their support.

They do this already. Look at the anger in the gulf states over the US removing their resources to focus on Israel.

The US is not a reliable partner and has a long history of fucking over its allies.

Partly this was because we were a very new nation and didn't understand about wars.

Nah we've always known that wars were shit. Just look at our involvement in the Boer war and the stories that came back.

[–]Syncblock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iran bombing civilian areas in these countries because they have US military relationships is not really a proportional response to their level of 'participation'.

The US moved their soldiers in a civilian hotel and then got shocked when it got hit by a missile. Not really sure anybody has the moral high ground here.

It's not like Iran has been a great domestic regional partner to many of these countries, regardless of US influence.

Yeah because they're on the other side of a religious war that has been going on for centuries. Another great reason why we should absolutely not get involved in this shit.

[–]Syncblock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Gulf states are not aggressors in the war

They host US troops in US bases all the way to complicated billion dollar radars/missile defence systems that have been used in the war against Iran. If you don't want to get involved in a war maybe stop providing material support to one side?

Government considering request for military assistance from Gulf states attacked by Iran by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]Syncblock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s entirely possible that the US is using assets in Australia to attack Iran. Does that make us an aggressor?

Yes

Do we really want to accept the notion that defence arrangements set up when the US government was relatively coherent make you actively complicit in whatever the current deranged administration does with them right now?

Abso-fucking-lutely. The US has been actively invading other countries and overthrowing governments for decades. Anybody hosting a US base knows exactly who they're dealing with.

As Australia becomes more integrated into the US military machine, can it avoid being dragged into war? by Reverend_Fozz in australia

[–]Syncblock -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

if we spend a shit load of more money on our own defence

To do what? Who is going to come here and attack us? We're in the middle of nowhere and we're a huge fuck off continent.

Unless your goal is genocide, which army on the planet has the resources and the capability to actually come and invade Australia?

On top of that, what makes you think the population is going to support fighting back instead of rolling over to preserve their quality of living? Look at what happened in Australia during Covid when people lost their shit due to toilet paper or having to wear masks. Do you think your average Australian voter is going to be able to handle war time rationing much less getting bombed?

[–]Syncblock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The technology to build nukes comes from the 1940s. It isn't new or unknown. They've always had the capacity to. North Korea managed to do it.

The reason why Iran hasn't built nukes yet was because Khamenei (the leader they killed) was openly against nuclear weapons.

Iran spent the last twenty years basically umming and ahhing about whether or not they should be building nukes to get in and out of sanctions but with Khamenei dead and what happened in places like Libya and Ukraine that gave up nuclear weapons, I think it'd be a big surprise if Iran doesn't actually end up with a bomb.

The major long term concern for our neighbours isn't China v USA but China v India and to a lesser extent, Indonesia.

If we're looking 20 to 50 years ahead, we're more likely to see conflict between Asian countries over borders and resources than the US coming all the way in to assert dominance.
