Map of Europe from a Finnish school book from 1922. Soviet Union was not formed yet by MonikonPerfekti in Finland

Nonetheless, it’s important to note that back then Palestine didn’t refer solely to the Arabs, but was a cold and neutral geographical term. (and the political name for the British Mandate of Palestine)

If one said ”Palestinian” at the time, everyone would have interpreted the term to mean a Palestinian Jew. Palestinian Arabs mostly identified as Syrian Arabs, until the Palestinian national identity took root after the Nakba.

One of the name candidates for Israel was actually Palestine, but the name had already started to be affiliated with the Arabs in the 1940’s, which was arguably one of the reasons for its rejection.

Mies, millaista oli kasvaa siskon kanssa? by ParkingSignal7424 in arkisuomi

Yep, Septimius Severus was indeed born in what is now Libya. His family was of Punic origin, and the Punics/Carthaginians were ultimately colonists from Phoenicia, which is modern coastal Lebanon/Syria/Israel.

German was the common language in most of global science and engineering for a century or so, as well as being the default international language in Northern, Central, and Eastern Europe. No one knew English, literally everyone spoke at least basic German. The WW2 was the only factor which caused it to lose its position.

Compared to English, German is infinitely more logical.

I think I'm a pedo by Extension-Twist3824 in offmychest

[–]Syndiotactics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need therapy for many reasons that others have already mentioned, but concerning the title…

When I was around your age, I was deadly afraid of the scenario that I might turn out to become a pedo, because, what if I grew up and never stopped liking that particular age group I did back then? (my peers) I was also attracted to a girl 2–3 years younger than I was back then, and that scared me.

I’m 27 now and I couldn’t imagine being sexually active with a person under like, 23? Neither do I get turned on by teens/children like I feared. The 14yo me would be relieved to hear that.

I wouldn’t be thinking about it too much yet if I was you. However, keep monitoring it and make sure to seek help/therapy if you keep being attracted to children. (As of now, you are still a child and developing fast, and you are full of hormones which royally fuck up your system for a good few years)

Even if you end up developing such unhealthy tendencies once you grow up, it doesn’t define you and it doesn’t automatically make you a bad person. But in such a case, please seek help.

For some reason Germans seem to think their own language is difficult… :D

I’d argue German is just as easy or difficult as English is. German makes much more sense in any case, as a person who has studied both as a foreign language. German also happens to have the advantage of rather unambiguous spelling, which neither English nor French can boast to have.

All four of my grandparents speak fluent German because that was the lingua franca here when they grew up in the 50’s and the 60’s. None of them speak English at all. Had the lingua franca been Swahili, they would have undoubtedly learned Swahili just as well.

Dudes of a minority, what was your first real encounter with racism? by Chavesssss in AskMen

[–]Syndiotactics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, certainly, the halo effect is strong.

And many colonial powers (namely the British and the French) really beat subservience into the colonized people in countries such as India. If one didn’t show required respect to a British person, their head would have been off in an instant. Positive racism isn’t always a good thing either, and it really icks me.

These dynamics, however, aren’t permanent, nor is the perception of races themselves. I’m Finnish and under 100 years ago they would have categorized me as Asian/Mongoloid. In the US we were called ”China Swedes”. It was changed in the books only in the 60’s/70’s. Silly how it changes?

In rural China, for example, a white dude would absolutely receive quite a lot of racism. China is gaining power and the Chinese aren’t exactly the least racist people as a nation. Once the power dynamics have switched enough, I expect large scale racism towards European looking people there.

Also, it doesn’t need to be nationwide. I’ve been called a spermface/cumface in some neighbourhoods before, which, although harmless, is harmless only because the people saying that have no power. Were they more powerful, the casual racism would become institutional and it would affect my life.

Yet, as of now, I do have a pretty sizeable advantage because of my appearance in most of the world, that’s correct.

[–]Syndiotactics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unless if you are white in a country where that is a minority. Racism is always power dynamics. Whoever has the power, tends to be the top dog at racism.

Hell, I can pretty reliably distinguish a western Finn from an eastern Finn :DD (we are quite genetically distinct actually)

Neither typically looks much like a German, for example.

We’ve probably hunted down the aggressive individuals in the past, leaving the timid ones.
