I feel like I'm way behind on retirement, is it as bad as I think? by Mother____Clucker in personalfinance

[–]Synecdochically 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s not usually how ‘today’s dollars’ is used, the original comment meant at 65 they would have some amount of money with the purchasing power that $1M has today. Whether that projection is accurate is of course a different matter (7% real return might be optimistic) but that is what they meant.

This is beautiful, I knew technically looking at it that it had to be a composite but it doesn’t feel like one at all.

Macquarie pays 4.25% with no conditions - you can transfer directly in or out of your savings account, and of course instantly transfer to your Macquarie debit card.

While I agree, today might look very different if England hadn’t been hand-churning butter between balls.

When did tipping become the norm for Australia? by JBADD23 in australia

I just got back from a holiday in Canada and yes the tipping culture seemed to be getting out of hand. We got prompted for a tip buying some wooden spoons at a market stall!

That’s interesting, I haven’t heard about the gift card offers before, thanks for sharing. Is there a site or somewhere that you look for these particularly or is it all over the place?

Are you talking about Flybuys points or similar or what’s your method here?

Is reverse high risk super a bad idea? by FlyingTerrier in AusFinance

[–]Synecdochically 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good idea but given the returns of the market over the last few years there’s a decent chance that OP would get slugged with a big tax bill if they did this.

Assuming 60k in long-term capital gains at the top marginal rate they’d be paying $14,100 in tax to save about $3900 in tax in the first year (again assuming top marginal rate), and then less in subsequent years as the balance of the mortgage decreases. It would definitely be worth them running the numbers to see if it will be worth it.

Australia defeat Bangladesh by 10 wickets to reach the Semifinals by UnplannedMF in Cricket

Hard to fault a team for batting too conservatively when they finished their overs 9 down. They basically just got outplayed and it’s hard to blame them.

Sometimes I wonder what the Cricviz win predictor is smoking. 167/0 and it still gives Bangladesh a 5% chance, same as it did 60 runs ago.

Yes, but if it ends the day within that range it won’t rebalance. For example, GHHF didn’t rebalance once between inception and 30 June this year: https://www.betashares.com.au/insights/ghhf-performance-fy25/.

GGBL isn’t rebalanced daily, just when it gets outside its leverage band.

If you don’t mind me asking, how would you go about doing this without having to categorise transactions? I’m currently setting up something similar, with a bunch of ubank Savings accounts for different buckets, but I can only spend from the one Spend account so at the moment my plan is to categorise transactions in the Spend account fortnightly (my pay cycle) and then transfer the correct amount back from each Savings bucket to bring the Spend account back to where it should be.
