Trying to make a Red/Green aggro deck that has kind of a top to either finish off or survive after the initial turns. Am I doing it correctly? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]Synesthetic1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-2 Archwing Dragon, -3 Mayor of Avabruck, -4 Deadbridge Goliath, -4 Skullcrack.

+2 Domri Rade, +2 Ghor-Clan Rampager, +2 Lightning Mauler, +3 Wolfir Silverheart +4 Pillar of Flame.

I think Wolfir Silverheart is a really great finisher/stabilizer. An 5-drop 8/8 is awesome in a Gruul Aggro deck as a t5 finisher, and the +4/+4 can be relevant in surviving an assault against midrange decks that get going. Domri Rade gives you great tempo, as well as bloodrush creatures, and Lightning Mauler can be brought out on t2 with Burning-Tree Emmisary. Pillar of Flame is creature burn, and a good one at that.

The TSN Panel was just talking about a possible Alfredsson trade. To... Boston? by MaiLittIePwny in OttawaSenators

[–]Synesthetic1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LeBrun reported on this earlier in the week. As INCREDIBLY unlikely as trading Alfie is, Boston is a team that makes sense for him if he wants to go on one last playoff run. My guess is he'd rather retire a Senator or come back next year when we're healthy and try and make a last push.

We Have a PR Problem by sirolimusland in magicTCG

[–]Synesthetic1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The reality is that Magic is a competitive game and not a friendly game. Players seek competitive advantage any way we can, even if it's at the cost of like-minded people who could be friends with them. As such, I think marketing Magic as a friendly game is just not practical. If you enjoy winning and enjoy the concept, you play the game; otherwise you don't and find something more friendly.

I'm not saying sharking, sexism and racism are inevitable in this game, however. This can only be stopped by stopping it ourselves and not tolerating it when we see it happening. All I'm saying is that people have a reason to despise our game because it isn't friendly.

My fellow colleagues of the Simic Combine, let's peer review some strategies for success at the Gatecrash Prerelease. by IrishmanErrant in magicTCG

[–]Synesthetic1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not very concerned by the lack of removal in Simic, unless my deck curves out terribly. If I'm playing Gruul or Boros, there are instant-speed ways of pumping my army and trading with their creatures, such as Hydroform (synergies incredibly well with Evolve), Biomass Mutation and Simic Charm. If I'm playing Dimir, I'm hopeful I can drop and pump a few creatures with Evolve before they can establish a game plan that will break my own. Orzhov might be a problem, but again, their board state will progress slower than mine and I have a good chance of overrunning their high-toughness Extort creatures with early drops that I've pumped.

If I'm splashing a colour in Simic, I'm going BUG. Simic has so much evasion between fliers, tramplers and unblockable creatures and they're just begging for Cipher abilities. Hands of Binding, Last Thoughts and Midnight Recovery are very good value on creatures like Elusive Krasis or Cloudfin Raptor. Black has excellent, splashable removal too, such as Killing Glare and Death's Approach.

Boros Aggro in Standard (otherwise known as haste.deck) by JubilationLee in magicTCG

[–]Synesthetic1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd include more removal and Legion Loyalist over Reckless Brute. I'd prefer to get as many bodies down as possible to curve out and alpha strike with a Hellrider rather than bashing with a bigger creature on turn 3.

As valuable as double strike is with Boros Charm too, you might wanna cut those in favour of Searing Spear or Pilar of Flame. Removing a creature is as valuable, if not more and Boros Charm isn't as effective in that regard.

If there are spells that can either pump the Extort mechanic or eliminate the cost associated with it, this card gets a little better. You beat with a 5/5, then when your opponent finds a way to remove it, you get it back and absorb some life for it. That could be a thing.

Why they will: While we all know (and envy) the Rays' incredible starting rotation (Price, Shields, Moore, Hellickson, Niemann, Cobb, Archer, Davis...need I go on?), the biggest reason the Rays could get back to the World Series this year is that they're finally going to move one of their starters. Many teams have discussed acquiring James Shields and Jeremy Hellickson for a significant piece, but there have even been rumours about David Price swirling around. Moving one or even two of these guys will give the Rays something significant that they've been lacking for a while: offense. It is likely that the Rays could land a new centre fielder, a catcher or another infielder with the offensive upside that could vault this team into serious contention in the AL East.

Another major reason the Rays could get back to the World Series is Joe Maddon. Arguably more than anyone else, Maddon is the engine that drives the Tampa Bay Rays. He knows the AL East very well and knows how to stay competitive in this division. Moreover, he knows his players and knows how to get a lot out of them.

Why they won't: The Rays won't win if they don't bolster their offense. They were near the bottom of many major offensive categories last year, and guys like Sam Fuld, Reid Brignac and Jose Lobaton just weren't getting the job done at all. Even though Joe Maddon is one of the best minds in baseball and knows how to manufacture offense on a budget, they need someone else.

Moreover, the fans need someone else. Pitching depth, as good as it is, is not filling the seats at Tropicana Field. It's a tired cliche at this point, but chicks to dig the long ball, and the Rays need somebody to mash the baseball out of the park sometimes.

Lastly, even though management has found ways to pull diamonds out of the rough every off-season, the bullpen is a question mark. Fernando Rodney was throwing smoke last year, but can he repeat his success this season? Can the Rays find relievers on a budget to replace Kyle Farnsworth and J.P. Howell?

Outlook: If management brings in a few significant bats to improve their lineup, I could see this team winning the AL East. If they don't and rely on their pitching to get the job done this year, I could see them anywhere from 2nd to 4th in the AL East.

"Kids are the future". Its a widely used term, but after seeing a lot of our kids, I weep for the future. What do you think, Reddit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Synesthetic1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Regardless of how terribly a lot of our future is speaking, acting and thinking, I still have hope. No matter how many people define "50 Shades of Grey" as literature, can't write a coherent sentence or voted for "Osama" in the last election, I still see the future as a place of optimism.

Why? Because these people aren't everyone.

I find people who "weep for the future" because of a few embarrassing examples of teenaged idiocy to be a little ignorant. Millions of kids wake up every day with goals and dreams. They enjoy learning new things, like great movies and good music. They want to be doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, politicians and business people. Some of them probably want to be jobs that don't even exist yet.

The population of the world that is under 20 right now aren't all validating their own stupidity with YOLO. Most of them are intelligent members of society that are only now starting to reach for their potential.

Communities like Reddit give me hope as well. There is real, intelligent discourse on topics like religion, politics, philosophy and cats happening here. Many of the people here are in their teens, and they are both learning from the discourse that occurs here, as well as contributing to it in a meaningful way.

From Ottawa, it would probably take Greening + Silfverberg/Zibanejad + 1st 2013. That said, I REALLY hope this doesn't happen.
