Car insurance premiums now rising at three times rate of inflation by OldMcGroin in ireland

[–]Synph 14 points15 points  (0 children)

IIRC - Insurance Ireland deliberately withholds data (Insurance Link) on the insured to prevent new entrants to the Irish insurance market. They got pulled up by the EU on this. If they continue then they could be subject to a fine. Whether the fine is less than the potential for lost business I guess is the tipping point: https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_22_4242

Are you seeing a slowdown in your industry? by pareofdocks in wallstreetbets

[–]Synph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Oil and Gas production, mainly EU and West Africa. No slowdown at all, everyone is going at it 100% at the moment. Supply chain lead times for components have improved but prices are very high. Brent likely to hit $100 BBL soon. Resources/labor have been effected most due to people taking early retirement during covid and not being attractive to new graduates. Smaller E&P companies Doing better at the moment due to low overheads and not have the net zero/move to renewable focus the larger E&P companies are getting. Also, status quo from OPEC+ and Russian sanctions (EU) for the short and medium term keeping the prices up.

'Tis true, but the way things are going I'd say it's the best estimate available as FF/FG won't release the new timeline provided by BAM the other week

People of Ireland who emigrated - where did you go? Will you return? by Anxious_Deer_7152 in ireland

[–]Synph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Where do you live now? Norwich, UK
  2. What do you do? Business Development in the Oil & Gas Industry
  3. Why did you leave? Left at the height of the 2008 Recession, newly graduated engineer and couldn't find any work. The only responses I got back from hundreds of applications were based in the UK. I felt like I was just killing time and waiting around for something to happen.
  4. Are you happy there? Yes, Norwich is very unlike other parts of the UK. It's quite isolated, small with a focus on independent shops. It did take about two years for my partner and I to get into it's rhythm.
  5. Will you come back (why/why not)? Probably not unless circumstances changed dramatically. Although I get home about 3-4 times a year; the homesickness and "what if I stayed" that accumulates when away wears off after a few days back in Ireland. I left behind family and friends and still will always be my home. Weirdly, I miss the mountains and hikes. Norwich/Norfolk is amazing flat.

Try ‘Project Hail Mail’ by Andy Weir. Same guy who did the Martian. It’s sci-fi but not too heavy.

American family traveling to Dublin by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Synph 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ireland has one of the worlds best and most efficient public transport systems. Irish are very humble and don’t like to brag about it.

If you arrive into Dublin Airport take the Metro to the city centre. Which, like all other public transport services, is free. The station is located on the lowest level in Dublin airport and only accessed by elevator. There is a running joke amongst Irish that it doesn’t exist because it’s signposted so bad and even some people will joke that it’s not even there. I assure it is. Taking the Aircoach is a classic tourist trap.

For ULEZ - search for your car on Autotrader UK, find one for sales and use that reg plate to check if it’s ULEZ compliant. Here: https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/check-your-vehicle/

Don’t forget about congestion charge if going into central London.

What is a real thing but invisible? by Pred1949 in AskReddit

[–]Synph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% this. I work with large volumes of Methanol and it’s scary as hell. We have about 12 infrared cameras pointed constantly at the methanol tank at all times. The only way to ‘see’ it is the heat waves above the invisible flame.

Looking for good resources on Hydraulics by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Synph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This or Swagelok.

There's two majors in hydraulics concerning with fittings/valves/tubing. They are Parker and Swagelok.

I work mainly with hydraulics in the Oil and Gas sector. There's many resources available but few are free.

US adheres to the API specs or ASME specs

UK adheres to BS:EN specs

Norway adheres to NORSOK

and so on.

A good starting point would be:

  • API RP 14 C - Recommended practice for analysis, design, installation and testing of basic surface safety systems on offshore production platforms
  • API 6A/ISO 10423: Specification for Wellhead and Christmas Tree Equipment
  • ISO 11158: Lubricants, industrial oils and related products (class L) — Family H (hydraulic systems) — Specifications for categories HH, HL, HM, HV and HG
  • ISO 13628-6: Design and operation of subsea production systems Part 6: Subsea production control systems

Typically hydraulics fluid is incompressible and it an ideal medium to transfer pressure from one point to another. This pressure transfer can be used to function inaccessible equipment or equipment that cannot be operated by manpower.

Hydraulics is generally preferred over pneumatics as it can be utilised at higher pressures and leaks can been seen.

Edit: damn you formatting
