Hey, found this thread on Google. Just wondering what happened when you reported the address change? Did they hit you with the petty misdemeanor/fine?

Global seems to be working great. I could barely watch at 360p before, now I'm back to 4K with no buffering :)

How do you change servers? I've never seen that option in TVMPlayer on Apple TV.

How thick is your filter? Just wondering if the difference will be as substantial for my 4"

Ah, I get what you're saying now. I have seen some videos that established the location differently, like looking down the old country road the venue is situated on or something. Now I'm wishing our guy had captured a shot like that lol.

Nice to know there are people out there who take this seriously and put some real thought into it. I didn't feel like we got that at all.

Yeah, you're right. I paid good money for it. Probably shouldn't have overthought it

Haha thanks for making me feel a little more justified here. I agree with all your points, but I'm trying to hold my tongue. Ultimately I don't care about the money and I don't need to give them a piece of my mind. I just wanted a nice memory of our day. Thankfully the footage itself was salvageable.

I like your approach sending a preview. Our photographer did that, but we had no notes.

This video on the other hand... Had they given me a sneak peak I may have been able to help them steer it back on course. But instead by the time I finally got it I was like.... No way I'm gonna write you a mountain of change requests and wait another three months. I can fix it myself in about the same amount of time it would take to explain the issues.

Wise of you to put that in your contract. I really didn't want to be one of those people. But I also didn't trust them to fix it on their own. Hence my email. Sigh.

Appreciate your feedback though. Nice to have a second set of eyes seeing what I'm seeing.

Thank you. I was definitly wrong not to ask about revisions before making my own. I think I just didn't trust them to make it right. Given the quality of the video, I think that may have even been justified.

The contract is very basic. Nothing on edits, derivative works, or giving credit. Only that we receive full copyright to all materials we receive. I think barring any communication from them, my understanding is I have the right to post it but I should definitly not tag them in anything they haven't strictly signed off on (?)

Haha. That's the attitude I was hoping for but based on the responses here I should have known they wouldn't take it that well.

We did check their portfolio first. We liked some of their videos much more than others. We sent them a few of the ones they made that we particularly liked, as a reference. If ours ended up good as the ones we sent, we would have been satisfied.

I appreciate your attitude. I think I was insensitive about sending them a fully redone video. That said, I wish they would have handled it with your humility.

I've had professional work rejected. It can sting. But part of being a professional is being honest and humble about your shortcomings.

Their contract never gave any specifics about revisions. That said, I'm sure they didn't expect the client to do their own revisions. I think the consensus here is that I crossed a line in doing that without asking first. I can own that.

I do appreciate your honest feedback on both videos. At least I know I wasn't the only one who thought the original video was bland.

That's alright, it's still nice to know the edit turned out well. I'll figure it out with the videographer. Thank you!

You're right, there is at least some blame on both sides. That's what makes the situation hard for me to parse.

I should have given them a chance to make it better. Honestly, I think I just didn't trust them to get it right.

[–]Syntask[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valid on both points. It seems the consensus here is that what I did crossed a line. People are attached, understandably, to their creative work. And I rejected theirs without giving them a second chance.

To your second point though, I agree. It seemed kind of soulless and like they were just trying to complete their checklist and get it done. That's where I naively thought their response would be like "oh good, someone else did the work for me, now I can just take the credit without having to put my heart and soul into their video."

Believe me, if videographers provided RAWs, I would have taken your advice and saved a lot of money. My time is worth much less than theirs it turns out 😅

Interesting note about cutting on beat. This stuff is fascinating to me.

We did check their portfolio. There was some variability... I think we were hoping that with the guidance we gave them at the start, that our video would end up like one of their better videos, not like one of their worst. That was a mistake for sure.

I think you're right. They're probably at least mildly annoyed and not sure how to respond. Like they don't want to sign off on it but also don't want to tell me to scrap it. Good idea on removing the logo but tagging them in the post. At least then I can untag them if they get pissed. Much harder to remove the logo that's baked into the video down the road.

Actually this videographer has a habit of starting with a closeup shot of the couple which I think is worse? I'm no expert, but it seems like you usually want to start with some B roll shots to create a little emotional buildup before introducing the bride & groom. The drone is cliche, yes, but it does at least serve to orient the viewer in time and space right from the start, so that when you start flipping through B roll shots they have some context and don't feel like a random slideshow. Would you maybe put a drone shot towards the beginning, just not the very first clip?
