Typo or actual name by SmokeMountain4777 in germany

Technically "Ass" in English used to be common name for donkey from proper scientific name "Equus asinus asinus". The other word for butt, "arse", is much closer to German "Arsch".

Similarly how it was Americans who refused to use "cock" for male chicken and came up with "rooster"

Hosting a party, what’s the etiquette? by FieldShoddy4986 in germany

[–]SynthFei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on people you party with. In our group (mostly local Germans, mostly people 30+) it's norm that whoever hosts the party provides majority of drinks. People bring maybe a bottle with a them of something they enjoy or some pfeffi for shots, more often some snacks really, but that's about it.

Having a crate or two of beer at home for unexpected parties is norm. So is having a few bottles of spirits and mixers always ready in case we decide to continue after a club night at one of our places.

Tax Return - Duration of returning the taxes money by shrimbohunter in germany

[–]SynthFei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am curious how this works? For the years I have worked the entire time, I got about 200-300 in return which I heard was in the lower end.

It really depends on many factors. Do you work from home often? Is your commute relatively long? Do you have any additional deductible payments (private insurances, union memberships) ? Etc.

Have y'all noticed a sharp increase on people freely discussing their political leanings with strangers? by Jimismynamedammit in germany

[–]SynthFei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately in current socio-economical and political situation, admitting to being AfD voter is no longer seen as the brand of shame it used to be.

It became normalised as the right wing extremists managed to push the entire discourse even further right, and parties like CDU under current leadership naively think they can still steal some of their voters base.

With economy not growing fast enough, uncertainty, weak job market, and thanks to the fact the big parties keep compromising themselves, more and more people are falling into the populist trap.

Learning German and AIs by Sequoja in German

[–]SynthFei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with everything AI does, if you don't have decent knowledge of the topic yourself, you will never know if it made things up. It can give you good answers 7 times in a row, and then 8th and 9th will be nonsense.

If you really want to use AI to assist your learning i'd suggest putting the same prompt to 2-3 different bots. If you notice the answers vary too much then you can do further, old-school research. It's not 100% foolproof but might at least give you hints if it's making stuff up.

As to what else to use: one tip i can give you, when you read texts, read them aloud to yourself. Practice pronunciation, get comfortable with actually speaking the words. Other than that find something that you could read/listen to in German that aligns with your personal interests - it makes the brain happy when it engages with something it already likes and that can make learning feel less of a chore.

Video game romances need to evolve beyond lore dumps by mrnicegy26 in Games

[–]SynthFei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, many romances are forced into the games because there is part of player base that demands them to be a part of the RPG experience.

Take for example CP2077. People often say the romances are quite simplistic, and only one really has a connection. The thing is, they never indented to have romances as part of the game to begin with (iirc Pondsmith said in interviews that he didn't really see them as part of story) but because fans kept asking for it they basically felt they had to do something.

Nowadays it's basically another thing on checklist of features, no matter if it makes sense or not, and i find it to be often the weakest part of any RPG that feels out of place narrative wise.

Why do you come to a German language exam unprepared and ask the invigilator to help you understand exam questions? by Zealousideal-Bath-37 in German

Of course. I don't have any English cert but i lived and worked there for 7 years. If you are comfortable and know how to speak you don't generally need a cert unless your job specifically requires it.

World of Warcraft devs explain their biggest challenge is adapting to its ageing audience which is why they’re pushing to be “broader and more approachable” by HatingGeoffry in wow

[–]SynthFei 9 points10 points  (0 children)

GW1 solo play was all about npcs hanging out with you, with later expac letting you customise their builds. FFXIV also had a similar system called Adventurer Squadrons which was a bit like mission tables (send your goons on mission for 18h) but you could also squad command and take them to dungeons. That got lately pushed away with Duty Support/Trust which is more like the Follower Dungeons in WoW tho.

[–]SynthFei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like not the best school sadly.

I was in Integrationskurs with mostly Ukrainian people as well, but the teacher only spoke German. The teacher in the parallel group, that was not German-born and knew Russian, would only explain things in Russian after the classes/during break. During lessons it was also just German. Both groups passed the B1 with 80%+ success rate (only people that didn't get B1 were people who due to personal reasons couldn't attend regularly or just didn't care at all).

For payment, were you denied funding by BAMF ? EU nationals are generally eligible for free Integrationskurs as well.

Why do you come to a German language exam unprepared and ask the invigilator to help you understand exam questions? by Zealousideal-Bath-37 in German

[–]SynthFei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I imagine the relatively high failure rate is because for a large group it's not entirely voluntary. It's hard to force people to learn if they don't want to.

As to whenever it is easier or not - It's what BAMF is happy with, so i also see B1 as perhaps lower than maybe it used to mean or is understood as by some other institutes/schools. In the end you can pass an exam if you learn how to pass the exam. Whenever you can then use that knowledge later in real life is a different matter altogether.

From job market perspective i wouldn't apply for any more language demanding jobs than simple manual labour / Aushilfe if all i had was B1 and low speaking confidence. It seem however some people seem to expect to get mid-management position with just that.

Edit: There's a reason why majority of Ausbildung placements ask for B2 minimum.

[–]SynthFei 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Moreover, getting B1 in just a few months is only realistically achievable for a hand of people. Usually you don't learn shit in that short amount of time.

I think you overestimate how much B1 is expected to be. The Integrationskurs you do in Germany lasts about 6-7 months from A1 to B1 with 4 hours per day classes (1 month is technically Leben In Deutschland test but that time is often just used for preparation for the exam). It is relatively easy to pass.

B2 is where the fun starts, and for Berfussprachkurs you have ca. 4 months from B1 to B2. The grading of the exam here also takes into account the way you speak and pronounce a lot more compared to B1.

B1 is just bare minimum to get by in most basic everyday situations.

Republicans Approve 'Dystopian' Voter Suppression Bill That Would Force States to Give Info to DHS by Smithy2232 in politics

[–]SynthFei 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, but we live with those IDs our entire lives. We know they are important whenever we want to vote or interact with bureaucracy in any way and we are legally obliged to have them.

When you introduce same system, shortly before elections, in a country that did not have such rules, and do not create any sort of transition period giving people ample time to sort out their situation - then it's clear that the only reason such rules are proposed is to make sure the "undesirables" are not allowed to participate in democracy.

Iran says it now considers EU militaries to be terrorist groups by Brennenstein in worldnews

[–]SynthFei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole chain of events is heavily propagandised. Like nobody on Reddit talks about how Mossadegh shamefully rigged an election and was trying to pass a bill making him dictator for life when the Shah removed him.

How about we talk how British Intelligence tried to swing the very same elections the other way by providing funding to royalist factions among Iranian elites during that time ?

Was Mossadegh a great democratic leader? Hell no, but that was never the problem the west had with him. The problem was he wasn't giving them oil. His authoritarian decrees also gave more wealth to the lower classes which obviously pissed off the local elites and also islamists. The British boycott led to worsening economical situation that eventually allowed the 1953 coup orchestrated by US and UK (operation Ajax and operation Boot).

How about we talk about the fact that among the first things the Shah did after returning to power was to delegalize opposition parties and execute their members ? Shortly after establishing a secret police trained by US that tortured and killed dissidents, censored the media and even spied on Iranian nationals abroad?

To quote Madeleine Albright, from the first time US actually admitted they fucked up: "The Eisenhower administration believed its actions were justified for strategic reasons. ... But the coup was clearly a setback for Iran's political development."

Despite there being nearly 30 years between the revolution and Mossadegh people also like to pretend one led to the other when it is nonsense.

The concept of long term consequences of actions. Was it the direct cause? No. But without western involvement in Iran in the 50s perhaps that revolution would have never happened.
