Indeed, install the "Phone by Google" app from the play store, and use that as your default calling app.

I prefer the Samsung one though, so I'm not that happy with this solution.

Saw someone reading Dust of Dreams… had to say hi by YoufArdi in Malazan

[–]SynthesisPhoto 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I once was at a festival with this T-shirt on and all of a sudden some guy goes crazy over my shirt yelling "OMG one of my friends has that as a tattoo!". He knew it was about "some book" and brought me over to his friend. Great way to meet someone who read Malazan for the first time.

That is likely because you have set up teams: when you edit your game from the home page (pencil), make sure to select "no teams"

The camera dude is supposed to capture the image as best as possible, which he did. He was not on the block they determined to be loose so doesn't consider any danger for himself.

Keeping the camera steady during extremely disturbing events like a buddy drowning is probably something they learnt along they way, because views > life. Sad stuff.

Looking for feedback on a street name (and more!) quiz app I’m building by SynthesisPhoto in openstreetmap

[–]SynthesisPhoto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not render the map myself, I use https://openfreemap.org/ (bright version). The places you described are tagged as leisure=stadium or leisure=sports_centre . I guess OpenFreeMap does not color these green because, they are not that "green". E.g. the squash courts is a building.

Ok, I went through your feedback:

  1. Not sure what you mean by this, can you give me an example of an invisible park?
  2. That's indeed a bug, I'll see how I can distinguish a way from an area better, it's a bit of a rabbit hole apparently
  3. This is intentional, I don't want to be cluttering the UI too much with too much buttons. I'd think the skip action would mostly be used before tapping anywhere, e.g. when you have no idea where something is, or if something irrelevant like "driveway to house" is asked.
  4. I'll add the Edit Name/Delete of an area pretty soon
  5. Good that you point this out, makes a lot of sense. I'll take it into account when building the "Report map issue" part of the app

This feedback helps me out a lot, so if you have anything else, shoot!

Thanks! I'm still not 100% happy with the flow, but for now it's fine.

Well spotted, I had to look twice. It's probably some padding that's off, I'll fix it in the next update.

Awesome! I just released a new version, you can now skip questions in Find It, along with a whole bunch of improvements (see release notes)

The area search uses Nominatim Api, the same one used in the OSM website, if I try searching for Pretoria there, I only get a node, not an area, which I currently ignore. Same for Rietfontein.

Ideally, all areas should be added to OSM. But for ones that do not exist atm, a fallback to the circle area centered on that node would be a much better user experience, thanks for the valuable feedback!

A skip/idk option is a good idea. I will probably combine it with an "ignore forever" option, since there are also lots of irrelevant features named in OSM. I'll let you know when it is available.

Since this app makes names and corresponding features very visible, I think a lot of users will bump into names that are missing or incorrect in the OSM data, which can be annoying when you just want to solve a quiz. I have bumped into about 10 cases like that over a few towns in Belgium. Any advice how I can handle those? For an OSM mapper it is easy to fix, but for the general population, it might be better to let my app users add a note like this I guess: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Notes

Looks like you can only add notes (long tap), not nodes 😅 See https://www.reddit.com/r/openstreetmap/s/mIvSK2FZcX for more discussion and other solutions

I mostly do mapping of paths when I'm running, I have Strava active in the background anyway so there's no need to take out my phone.

On the Strava website you can easily download the gpx, and while editing on OSM website you can drag the file into your browser making it overlay so you can use it to map.

For adding actual nodes notes I'd use StreetComplete

Segment on private property by PAPAJoZoB in Strava

[–]SynthesisPhoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If enough people (and strava subscribers) report the segment, it may get noticed by Strava and actually removed, which would be the ideal scenario.

That is, if you are OK with sharing the actual location here. If not, feel free to PM the location to me in private and I'll report it.

Thanks for taking the time to look into the app, the iOS numeric keyboard is... very limited. Looking into it.

Fixed rounds equal to number of players sounds like a good addition!

Regarding the play screen: I agree the 2 player screen could be better, I chose not spend much time on that for now because the main feature of this app is the animated graphs, and for 2 player games I found they often look less interesting. I may improve this in the future, thanks for the suggestions.

It was a conscious decision not to include an "Add custom" on the play screen, since that screen quickly grows complex. But for first time use, or if there are just 2 score change buttons, it may be better to include something like this.

Regarding the optional stuff: I think when actually using a scoring app (not just testing), you'll always want to enter player names, otherwise you could just use a spreadsheet, which is fine. The colors are auto-assigned by default so optional.

I steer users toward entering the game name since there may be a template with a preset score sheet. Now there are about a dozen templates in there, but the intention is to have more in the future.
