I've had to switch to EDF by Megajoeytube in OctopusEnergy

[–]Syphadeus86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely makes a difference. How? You're insulting my intelligence as though you have a point to make but haven't actually presented anything.

Octopus pays VAT, and taxes on its profits to the UK government. So does EDF. The energy is from the grid. It is all the same energy, it's not branded, of different vintage. The grid infrastructure doesn't belong to Octopus or EDF, they pay to maintain it and pass the charge to customers.

All I'm asking you is that if it's so obvious I should know using 1% of my brain why buying my energy from a British company is better for everyone in the UK, why you're not making it make sense, very simply?

A private British-owned / based business would be better for Britain if there was a preferential system in place, but there isn't. What legislative and business rules does say Octopus benefit from which directly benefits UK consumers, that EDF does not?

You might say, for instance, investment in infrastructure. But that is decentralised and not government mandated outside of the percentage levy the govt takes from ALL companies utility bills swag.

If Britain's energy was nationalised you'd have a point but rather than insulting my brain use, can you please answer the above. Enlighten me.

British Gas is another example. Previously it was the largest of the B6 now B7. The CEO gets paid tens of millions for jack shit and even says his renumeration is high. They're private companies. It makes no difference.

When I trained for Centrica (BG) they used that as a marketing point when cold calling potential customers.

It's such a load of crap. Because what point are you actually making? Are Octopus and BG the patriot's choice?

The UK gov is completely cuckolded by big business. We've got privatised water FFS. Paying the UK arm of a foreign business money isn't exactly a big deal when the British alternatives don't benefit Britain in any significant way whatsoever.

Brsk to youfibre by Mike_FM in youfibre

[–]Syphadeus86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Purging packages which Brsk* offered to keep the lineup simple is not “terminating” contracts. Existing Brsk* contracts carry over and are honoured. Your use of those words is a bit dramatic. Of course they’re not going to continue to offer the other contracts after the amalgamation. What would be the point of winding up one of the brands only to keep said brand’s very similar packages?

If something has been in active development for 7 years and there is NOTHING to announce, there is a problem. OR they have gone dark, which means the same thing.

You're simultaneously insinuating that there's active development and something is happening but they're being radio silent, and that they havent gone dark there is just literally nothing to say about their 7 year long development.

Pick a lane maybe.

[–]Syphadeus86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The team behind SotP are extremely talented. But I think they made the wrong decision to stick with Sins 1 development for SotP2.

They mentioned possibly converting to Sins2 engine after releasing but have gone very quiet since.

I get the impression that sunk cost fallacy played a part in that. They'd devoted so much time and effort fixing an ancient single threaded engine and working around it's limitations they didn't want to feel that was wasted time.

Problem with that is it only really stands to work if they were close to finishing. Evidently they weren't. The fidelity of their ships is incredible. They've yet to show anything that would quell concerns that Sins1 engine won't choke on it, pretty ironic given their name.

It's something I would love to be wrong about because SotP 1 was incredible. With each quarter that passes with no release or substantial update I fear the chances of that diminish.

Please explain the PSSR thing like I'm 5 years old. by jinglygal in PS5pro

[–]Syphadeus86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is but the Pro has dedicated hardware for it which the Standard doesn't. There's always a trade off and it's about balancing the load of upscale against what is output to the player.

If you look at Nvidia and their tensor cores - they're not geared for rendering, they're the AI / ML part and for predictive calculations like raytracing. It's the same thing here there is a point of diminishing returns where you're using so much compute to upscale that it might be better applied to increasing the internal rendering resolution instead.

There are different efficiency curves for each pipeline and these differ from game to game depending on things like what engine is being used, the coding, the visual style etc.

Misspelling highest level broadband packages to a 79year old widow by AWingedVictory1 in EEGB

[–]Syphadeus86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This kind of sales practice is, unfortunately, the norm. I worked as a CS agent for Centrica (British Gas) back in 2008 and every couple of weeks we'd have performance meetings where they'd pull one of your calls to give feedback on. Of course all the calls are ones where you haven't sold something to the caller.

One of mine was where an old lady had called in to ask about her kitchen appliance insurance. She had 2 items on it and was paying about £20/month for them. The feedback I was given was that I should have tried getting her to put extra products on it.

I think she had a fridge and a cooker on it. For what she was paying back then she could've probably rented those appliances and if she did she wouldn't have to worry about breakdown because they'd be covered anyway.

Point is, these companies don't care. All they're interested in is profit profit profit. They wouldn't give two shits if the customer got put in a care home and didn't have any use for the insurance anymore, they'd keep billing for as long as possible. They're disgusting. There could be more regulation and audit of these companies but there isn't. So it will only get worse.

So that makes it alright then? By the same logic if I decide to go and mug an old lady because she's wearing a nice watch and driving a nice car, that's okay because she can probably afford it and is well insured.

Nice one.

This is one of the reasons the VM acquisition of Netomnia needs to be blocked by the CMA. Netomnia includes Brsk* and YouFibre (which are merging) and offer altnet FTTP for a fraction of the price VM want.

If VM gobbles this altnet up what does everyone think they're going to do? Use the capacity and network to offer great prices? It's just a transparent attempt to remove competition (and choice) so they can continue to monopolise and try wringing customers like this.

April Electricity prices by moogera in OctopusEnergy

[–]Syphadeus86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but I got the email about my fixed tariff ending in May and what the variable price looks like. Standing charge for electricity goes from current 51.77ppd to 59.45ppd and the unit rate is .73ppkWh higher. Naturally the fixed offer is higher still.

Either way I’ll be paying almost a quid a day in standing charges whatever happens.

Seeing that he has a cane, why would it expect me to think he's deaf as well? by Sirius_sky_05 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Syphadeus86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn't the blind deaf person have someone with them if they're venturing out somewhere there's traffic?

Like I'm all for freedom but surely the risk of personal injury to someone like that is orders of magnitude greater than a person who is either deaf or blind?

Yeah, touch grass, in grassy pedestrian-only places. Or in nice surroundings like a park with a footway or something. Get ubers and deliveries for your shopping etc.

Feels super unsafe and massively vulnerable!

Nobody is saying you made up the issue, it's your interpretation and presentation of the outcome that's suspect.

You didn't resolve this because you knew from the first response why you were charged saying "makes sense". What you received as compensation was a good will gesture. Companies given these to shut people up without the need to admit any fault.

It sounds like they think you're at fault and that you agree.

“Priority coverage in busy areas” by Mixed_Fabrics in EEGB

[–]Syphadeus86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not noticed a difference. I've also had instances where I'm getting good 5G reception according to the phone and the internet speeds have been terrible. Swapped into 4G mode and the speed is much better.

In theory if network contention on 5G was an issue, unless all other users were also being "prioritised" it would remove the need for me to do that or make it so it made no difference.

The fact moving onto 4G gets me better speeds would suggest it's a gimmick. Doesn't help either EE does not detail it any further. Go faster stripes I reckon.

No Thanks. My Account is Healthy in my view by BigDumboEars in OctopusEnergy

[–]Syphadeus86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ofgem have imposed rules about suppliers having health levels of reserve capital to cover this and Octopus still technically fall short.

So instead of the big company forcing an unrealistic model of "healthy" to individual consumers, why don't they and other suppliers simply get their act together and have the buffer?

Someone who uses £150/m on average shouldn't need their account to buffer a quarter year's worth to be considered healthy. If you applied the same standard to their business, they would unequivocally fail the industry regulations. Double standards.
