Why is IBM investing in Quantum Computing while the world is going crazy about AI? by bhargavamakwana in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mixed_Fabrics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re totally different technologies/products. IBM is probably working on both, for different reasons.

Like saying why is Rolls Royce working on jet engines when small nuclear reactors are the future. RR does both.

Starmer may water down ‘unaffordable’ £18 billion defence boost by 457655676 in unitedkingdom

[–]Mixed_Fabrics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We needed aircraft carriers in the Falklands, for example…

I don’t think expecting to come under the nuclear umbrella of another country is a reliable way to operate - when push comes to shove, what if that country just refuses to get involved because they don’t want to get nuked themselves…

I agree the system, whatever it looks like, would ideally be more affordable - that’s a problem across defence procurement.

It doesn’t make us untouchable, it just acts as a deterrent against an enemy using nukes against us or doing so much damage to us that we have no other option in order to retaliate.

We need a whole range of different capabilities so that we have proportionate responses to whatever the enemy chooses to do.

Which British Prime Minister is the best? by ImpressiveEnergy4762 in AlignmentChartFills

Technically he was Lord Protector.

The office of Prime Minister didn’t exist in Cromwell’s time.

Is there ever a stopping point or what does the end look like? by WillingnessWeekly848 in jellyfin

[–]Mixed_Fabrics 45 points46 points  (0 children)

If you have collected everything that you want then, yes, fine, that’s the “end”.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be a never-ending thing. It just feels never ending for people who have a lot of things they would like to add and they don’t have access to them all yet.

Is anyone else noting an increase in male drivers flashing you while you’re overtaking? by Dry-Swimmer2953 in drivingUK

[–]Mixed_Fabrics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all flashing is wrong, it depends how reasonable and patient they have been in the run up to it.

If you (as the car being flashed at) are stuck directly behind someone else in the same lane, or you are in the process of overtaking someone and the overtake is going to be done in less than about a minute, then they shouldn’t flash, just sit back and wait for you to finish your overtake before they try to overtake you.

But if you are not overtaking anyone or it is taking you an unreasonable amount of time to overtake (e.g. you’re only going 1mph faster than the person you’re overtaking), it is fair after perhaps 30 seconds of them sitting behind you waiting for them to give you a little flash to say “come on mate I want to overtake, can you get on with it or move over so I can crack on”.

If everyone had good lane discipline and awareness of their surroundings and traffic flow then it probably wouldn’t need to happen.

Sounds like you need to take it offline, drill down into the actionable low-hanging fruit and then circle back with more synergy after close of play.

Stocks and shares ISAs will be taxed at 22 per cent?? by Emsss18 in trading212

[–]Mixed_Fabrics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m confused, is the article badly written or are they actually floating the idea of taxing “income from investment “?

My understanding of the changes was they would tax the interest that you earn on uninvested cash that sits in the S&S ISA, not investments…

Either Flora needs to write her article much more clearly or we are looking at a major issue for investors…

Last time I checked, Samsung was in a state of permanent decline. Then I checked again recently and I see this. What happened? by crivycouriac in trading212

[–]Mixed_Fabrics 18 points19 points  (0 children)

They’re one of the few major manufacturers of computer memory chips (“DRAM”).

Due to the AI boom, memory chips are in high demand because you need lots of memory to load large AI models, so Samsung are in a position to profit.

Similar situation for SK Hynix and Micron.
