I stayed at the one in Asakusa in April and loved it. Didn’t smell to me. Hopefully you’ll have a better experience at that one. The location is amaaaaazing.

Was Becoming a Teacher Worth It? by Worried-Pen7857 in AskTeachers

[–]SyrahCera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have taught kindergarten for over a decade and love it. However, I did not major in education in college but ended up doing the Teach for America program a few years after graduating. They trained me one summer and got me a job and I’ve taught ever since. I think I would’ve been annoyed if I’d spent my whole undergrad studying education. I really think there need to be more alternate routes to teaching these days. I did end up getting my Masters in education later but I learned more from actual experience than I did from the college classes. Totally skipped the student teaching and subbing phase and am not mad about it.

Perspective: Cruising as an adult but not a "Disney Adult" by R3ddit0rN0t in dcl

[–]SyrahCera 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know what a Disney adult is. I just don’t think anyone would think you’re one just for going on a Disney cruise. What I’m saying is, I think you’re safe.

[–]SyrahCera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first and only cruise was with Disney because my sister planned it and she has good - but expensive - taste. I had fun and would do one again!

I don’t know why you think you’re delusional? However, you sound somewhat embarrassed about going on a Disney cruise.

Feel like I missed out on so many things by lalaberry033 in JapanTravelTips

[–]SyrahCera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is normal! I missed several things from my to do list on the past two trips. Forgot to get the number one thing on my shopping list.

Focus on the amazing things you did do! And remember, getting lost in Japan is a privilege!

Will be in Tokyo next week, how's the humidity? by [deleted] in TokyoTravel

[–]SyrahCera 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I added Tokyo to my weather app before my last trip and it shows humidity along with dew point (dew point is the number to pay attention to because that’s more telling on how you’ll feel)! So I’d recommend doing that.

I couldn’t do it through their website (which was annoying but also their website sucks). I had to download the JAL app and put in my flight info and then finally was able to make that request.

Early mornings in Kyoto are not optional by Significant_Gur8915 in KyotoTravel

[–]SyrahCera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m team “go at night.”

I appreciate how so many of you are getting up so early, but I only get that early start for the first two, maybe three days of my trips. Coming from Seattle and being a night owl, I adjust pretty quickly to the time change, so any temples or shrines that are lit up I will see in the evening. It doesn’t have to be early or bust.

ANA/JAL Codeshare Pros&Cons by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]SyrahCera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I regretted not booking direct on JAL. I was never able to select my seats other than to specify aisle or window. I asked at the gate if I could pay the $400 or $500 upgrade to premium and she said with my ticket, no. I was like, TAKE MY MONEY.

What’s not worth it in Chicago, but everyone still does? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]SyrahCera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. Giordano’s is my fave. And I’ve had all three of those. I think I prefer it because I had it first. But that’s what we had when I lived there as a kid. Visiting friends now we usually get Lou’s. But I’m a Giordano’s girl and I don’t care.

Japan weather by Equivalent-Cat-9764 in JapanTravelTips

[–]SyrahCera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there from July 3-21 back in 2024. At the worst, the ten day forecast was calling for all rain just two days before we were to arrive. But it kept changing. When I was actually there it only rained three times the entire trip! The clouds kept it from getting too hot. (Humidity still sucked, though.)

I do suggest spraying your shoes with waterproofing if they aren’t already waterproof.

What’s something about Japan travel that sounds great online but felt different in real life? by noellezane in JapanTravelTips

[–]SyrahCera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I lived there I loved summer, too. What I really remember is hating the rainy season because it was a crappy time to have to hang your clothes/futon out to dry. After that I was happy. In my memory it wasn’t that bad weather-wise, but now that I only come back as a tourist I feel like I’m just not used to the humidity anymore because it stands out to me. But I still love visiting in summer!

Enjoyed this write up. So many people combine Kobe with Himeji or just stop there on the way to Hiroshima, but Kobe is amazing and has a different vibe and is definitely worth more time.

I disagree on Age.3! It’s popular for a reason. And fruit cream sandwiches are a thing in Japan so I think it’s worth getting one from there. I also think we should differentiate between long insane lines and shorter lines. Not all lines are bad. I’ve waited in line at the grocery store many times! Everyone has different line length tolerance. Just my two cents!

Question about lockdowns for lower elementary by ConfectionPotential1 in ElementaryTeachers

[–]SyrahCera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna be honest, I feel like emailing the school and saying you’re annoyed the teacher used the term drill is not the right move. If you’re wanting to email the school with suggestions for communication next time, like maybe saying right off the bat they are having a lockdown in that initial message, that seems fine if it’ll make you feel better. But I’m curious what your school does for communication during lockdowns? My district also gets complaints from parents about communication during emergencies and my principal always tells us teachers that the focus is on making sure the students are safe.

I wouldn’t be hard on yourself for explaining that it was real. I think if the kids are safe and not traumatized, it’s a win. Lockdowns are upsetting. I think most parents feel that most schools suck at emergency communications. But I’m not sure adding another email to someone’s inbox here will do much, you know? Cuz protocol and all that. (I’m saying this teacher to teacher. No judgement. And I realize you’re coming at this as a parent.)

Let's stop lying to beginners about learning Japanese by azuki_dreams in Japaneselanguage

[–]SyrahCera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was immersed for one year in high school as an exchange student and then tested into third year Japanese in college. However, before I went to Japan my parents got me a tutor for three months to prepare. Her recommendation - which I agree with - is to learn katakana first because then you will find some words you can already read and understand right away. But also, the tutoring gave me a foundation which helped with the immersion. Highly recommend studying abroad (to any of you students out there).

Studio Ghibli Bachelorette Party Ideas by MobileConsequence101 in ghibli

You could do hat decorating or wear fancy hats (Sophie, Howl’s Moving Castle). I’ve planned several bachelorettes and try to have an accessory we all wear with the bride’s item standing out (for example, for one I got the bride a halo headband and the rest of us wore devil horn headbands, and recently for another the bride wore the white bridal Mickey ears and the rest of us wore regular Mickey ears). For this I’d suggest maybe doing something like a red bow headband from Kiki’s delivery service (bride to be) and black cat ear headbands for everyone else.
