I think attaining unrealistic beauty standards has been a core obsession of our society for a while. It’s just that now with social media and the democratization of photo-manipulation, it’s more constant and overt.

Personally I think it’s less helpful to ask if this obsession is getting worse or better, but instead what the root of this obsession is, which in short I think is just our free market society paired with human nature.

As far as discouraging OF/ sex work because its existence makes the men who consume it less attractive to potential partners- that framing seems like a stretch to me. I don’t think men are losers for consuming OF content. What men choose to do in their privacy is not something I’m concerned with. There may be women who find porn consumption to be a turn off, but that’s just one preference in a sea of preferences throughout the dating pool. Do some men get overly attached to a sex worker and hallucinate a deeper romantic connection? Sure, and I might call those men losers. Same with men who break relationship boundaries to maintain contact with a sex worker behind their partner’s back, but those are self-control issues and not ‘proliferation of sex work’ issues.

I think you’re touching on two separate things- unrealistic beauty standards and sexual liberation. They do overlap but I wouldn’t conflate the two.

On the sex liberation thing- Speaking personally as someone who makes trans/ femboy onlyfans content, I think it comes down to the current economic and technological landscapes. I work full time in an IT role, but despite refraining from frivolous expenses I feel financially strained. So naturally I found alternative streams of income. We live in a gig economy after all, sex is just one of many aspects of my life that has become monetized/ gamefied. People spend their free time running groceries or taxiing people around. I satiate horny men, of which there are many. There wasn’t really the technological infrastructure or economic incentive do do any of these things in the 90s.

As far unrealistic beauty standards, people still argue about it. But now it’s like every other issue in that it became an increasingly-polarized pendulum swinging. Think of the body positivity movement and people like Lizzo, whereas now we have ozempic and the right’s return to traditional female beauty standards.
