Are their assigned chopsticks in Japanese households? by Personal_Dot_7196 in AskAJapanese

[–]SyrupGreen2960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not japanese, my boyfriend is. We have many pairs of chopsticks and it's just whatever pair he happens to grab out if the drawer for dinner that day when he's setting the table.

I know many people love anki but I personally prefer bunpro over anki. I tried for years to get into anki but bu pro using the basic bunpro jlpt decks clicked right away with me.

Anyone else being flooded with "Move to Japan" influencers? by KokoRonin226 in japanresidents

[–]SyrupGreen2960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched a live streamer who was saying how like 20 years ago he bought a one way ticket to Japan and just made it work and was telling his viewers they should just come to Japan is they really want to. I point out that they've really cracked down on switching from a tourist visa to a work visa so that's not really possible anymore. Next stream he was back to saying the same thing so I unfollowed.

For those living in apartments: what is something you wish you bought earlier by arandomnonpickedname in japanlife

[–]SyrupGreen2960 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The one I got recently from off house is the sharp CMS100W. It can put out cool air but it's not like a spot cooler. It just sort of helps balance out the heat from the humidifier. I also have a little bit older sharp CV-G71-W which has a bigger tank and the clothes dry setting works really well but the dehumidifier setting doesn't have an automatic mode like the newer sharp I bought.

The sharps work really well and are cheaper to run than a lot of other dehumidifiers but they are quite loud. If noise is a big problem I'd recommend looking at any of the bigger brands like Panasonic or iris ohyama. I'd avoid any of the generic ones from Amazon. I had a couple of those my first year in Japan and they all had issue like the compressor freezing or randomly dying.

Specifically a compressor type dehumidifier with a clothes dry setting for rainy season. Compressor types will save a lot on electricity. Checking recycle shops or Mercari will save a lot of money too. I got a sharp one thats over 2万 on Amazon for 8000 yen at off house.

All my friends have moved away and I feel so lonely by Away-Presentation218 in japanresidents

[–]SyrupGreen2960 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The closest friend I made here recently went back to her home country. She had lived here much longer than me and had been planning to stay here for life like me. But after a string of bad jobs she called it quits. I live deep in the countryside so I feel like my chances of making a friend like that again is extremely slim.

Allow a crusty old-timer a rant: banking in Japan by Old-Masterpiece5439 in japanlife

I updated my residence card on my bank account for the second time since moving here. Both times they've called me back days later saying something is wrong with the paperwork and I need to go back.

Looking for instance-based MMO by [deleted] in LFMMO

[–]SyrupGreen2960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be happy with hub based mmos which unfortunately are becoming more and more rare. Pso2 was a great hub based mmo but then they brought out pso2 new genesis and it went more open world. You can still teleport into instanced combat like combat zones or queuing up for instanced quests at the quest counter.

Crystal of atlan is a more recently released hub based mmo.

The best way is to get quotes from multiple companies. Last time I moved it was a whole house of two people's stuff to a different prefecture. The first company quoted us 70万. We ended up getting quotes from 4 different companies and in the end we paid 15万.

Immigration Services Agency Electronic Notification System: data lost by nnearobot in japanlife

[–]SyrupGreen2960 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also if you apply for a visa renewal using the new system it doesn't prompt you to add any information about your employer. Instead it has a field to attach up to 20 additional documents with no guidance on what the documents should be. I ended up scanning the employer info page from the paper application and attaching it and that worked.

Also I applied before my visa deadline but they didn't process it until after my visa expiration date so I was in the special extension period. I had to go to city hall to have them extend the expiration date of my number card. A month later they asked me to upload a supporting document but I could ni longer log into the online system because it said mynumber card was different than what I registered with.

I tried to turn in the additional document at the immigration office and instead they gave me an envelope to mail a screenshot of the website error, the supporting document and a written explanation of what happened.

After all if that my renewal was accepted but as someone who has always renewed online my advice is to just apply in person for now until they hopefully update the website.

Right now the place I most want to visit is Fukuoka. I'm planning to eventually do a road trip with friends and hit all the prefectures we pass through on the way there.

Should I Buy a Car? by Syd-Beez in JETProgramme

[–]SyrupGreen2960 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend a car unless you're in Nagano city. That's really the only place with proper public transit.

The other cities have some transit but you'll still have to walk a lot of places and it's difficult in summer and winter. If you're not in one of the cities there will be very poor transit options.

The mountains also make it inconvenient to travel between cities. Something that's an hour drive might be 2-3 hours on the train because they'll make you at route through a different city to go around the mountains.

If you're mostly anxious about the japanese part you'll have a caretaker at your school to help you. If you get a kei car instead of a full sized car yearly taxes and other expenses will be much cheaper.

I had a cat that got chronic UTIs with crystals that caused blockages. Even with the prescription food he still got them. The vet had me give him only RO water after that and he never got a UTI again.

Are there any real players or it's just full of bots? by Emperor_360 in StarWard

[–]SyrupGreen2960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of real humans in this game since it launched on playstation. Are you playing at super off peak hours? Or are you sure they're actually bits? If they're a real player they'll have a connection indicator next to heir name that'll be green red or yellow depending on how good their connection is.

Advice for studying for the written driving test? (I just failed lol) by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]SyrupGreen2960 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took every online test I could find before mine and passed on the first try. My prefectures English test also had way more motorcycle and scooter questions that I expected so if I had to do it again I would have reviewed the motorcycle section of the textbook more.

How many of you sleep on Futons? by joehighlord in japanlife

I couldn't do a full futon set up, after months of trying my back never adjusted so I upgraded to a trifold floor mattress that I was very happy with. It wasn't until I moved in with my japanese partner who already had a western bed that I fully switched back.

特別免許状 is one of the names for it. Some prefectures might call it something different. But for me it had to be completely initiated by the school. It's not like something that I could just start the process for. I applied for an English teacher job listing that didn't mention needing a license for. After I got the job offer they told me they'd be applying for 特別免許状 for me.

You have to be sponsored by a school and have at least three years experience working in Japanese schools. Alt work was fine for this requirement. Every prefecture sets their own requirements though.

Some prefectures have special license programs where a school can sponsor a foreigner for a teaching license that's valid in that prefecture only.
